Where to find a rescue kitten in Newcastle

The count under the short answer is live: every kitten listed with us in Newcastle and within about 25 miles, on our Newcastle kittens page. When we checked on 28 October 2026 most were at Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter, and kittens come and go quickly, so check back. Our guide to Newcastle cat rescues compares every cat rescue we list.

Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter, Longbenton

About 3 miles from the city centre, on the north edge of Newcastle. You apply with the form on a cat's listing; its rehoming team contacts the person it thinks suits the cat best and invites you in to meet it, and you can apply again as often as you like. Visits are by appointment once an application succeeds (FAQs).

Pawz for Thought and Animal Krackers, Sunderland

Pawz for Thought works mainly in Newcastle, Sunderland and the counties of Northumberland, Durham and Tyne and Wear. Its adoption page sets out five steps: a questionnaire, a phone call, a home visit, meeting the cat where it is, then the paperwork. It won't rehome to anyone under 18.

Animal Krackers keeps its cats at Ferry Farm, Offerton Lane, open 10am to 4pm every day. You send an enquiry, then book a 30 minute viewing; a home visit follows before you adopt, and you need to bring photo ID and two proofs of address.

Foster-based rescues and Cats Protection

Minnie's Haven Cat Rescue is run by volunteers whose foster carers socialise the cats; it has a form, a checklist and a home visit, and doesn't accept applications where anyone smokes inside the home. Bryson's Animal Shelter at Eighton Banks, Gateshead, rehomes cats too. Cats Protection's Tyneside Cat Centre on Green Lane, Gateshead, covers postcodes including NE1 to NE39; enquire on a cat's own listing on its site. We don't list Cats Protection's cats.

Pairs, smoking and the home visit

Most rescues around Newcastle visit your home before a kitten goes, so expect it. Pawz for Thought, Animal Krackers and Minnie's Haven all name a home visit on their own pages. Some rescues list kittens as pairs to be rehomed together, so ask whether a single kitten would suit your home. Minnie's Haven won't consider a home where anyone smokes indoors.

What a rescue kitten costs, and what the fee covers

At Pawz for Thought every animal is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and treated for fleas and worms before it leaves, for a £125 minimum donation. At Animal Krackers a kitten's first year of vaccinations is covered and you get a voucher for neutering, with a small fee for pain relief; a microchip can be fitted at neutering for a small charge.

A kitten bought from an advert usually comes with none of that done, so neutering, a full course of vaccinations and the microchip are extra bills on top of the price.

Vaccinations, neutering and time indoors

Ask the rescue what has been done and what you agree to do. This is what the rescues around Newcastle say on their own pages:

  • Vaccinated and neutered. Pawz for Thought neuters, microchips and vaccinates before adoption; Animal Krackers covers a kitten's first year of vaccinations and gives a neutering voucher. In England the law also requires a cat to be microchipped before it is 20 weeks old (see the law section below).
  • Indoors at first. Animal Krackers says to keep a new cat in the house for at least the first four weeks before it goes outside.

If you've been searching "kittens for sale Newcastle"

Rescue kittens are adopted, not sold: you apply, the rescue matches you, and you pay its adoption fee or donation. Every kitten on our Newcastle kittens page is adopted that way. The same goes for "free kittens": a rescue asks a fee towards vet work, and a "free to good home" advert has no rescue behind it.

If you decide to buy a pedigree, Cats Protection suggests a breeder registered with a breed association such as the GCCF, and seeing the kitten with its mother at home. If an advert looks like a scam, report it to Report Fraud, which replaced Action Fraud.

The law in England

Microchipping cats

In England, cats must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks old and registered on a database, a rule in force since 10 June 2024. An owner found without one has 21 days to comply or may be fined up to £500. Free-living cats (farm, feral and community cats) are exempt.

Lucy's Law: buying a kitten

In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that kittens under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Not from a rescue: they ask an adoption fee or donation towards vaccinations, neutering and a microchip. A "free kitten" in a private advert has no rescue checks behind it, so see it with its mother at home and never pay a deposit before you have met it.

Do rescues near Newcastle home check before adopting a kitten?

Will a rescue kitten be neutered and vaccinated?

It depends on its age. Pawz for Thought neuters, microchips and vaccinates every animal before it leaves. Animal Krackers covers a kitten's first year of vaccinations and gives a voucher for neutering. Ask the rescue what has been done.

How long should I keep a new kitten indoors?

Animal Krackers says at least the first four weeks before any outdoor access. Ask your rescue for its own advice, and make sure the kitten is microchipped and neutered before it goes out.

Is it better to adopt two kittens?

Often. Some rescues list kittens as pairs to be rehomed together, and two kittens keep each other company. Ask the rescue whether a single kitten would suit your home.
