Adopting a dog in Preston

Be ready to drive. Hardly any of the dogs on this page live inside Preston itself: the nearest kennel we list is Labrador Rescue (North West Area) at Eccleston, near Chorley, about 8 miles south. Many dogs are out on the Fylde coast, about 15 miles west, with Homeless Hounds and Easterleigh Animal Sanctuary; Northern Greyhound Rescue keeps its hounds in foster homes and boarding kennels around Lancashire, and others are further off at Melling, Ellel and the Bolton side.

Every dog here links through to its own rescue, which handles your application; LocalPetFinder only lists them. Lancaster, about 20 miles north, has its own dogs page.

Stray dogs in Preston and Blackpool

Found a dog with no owner in sight? In England the law says to report it to the council. In Preston the council's stray dog service is run by its contractor, Acorn Kennels, which takes reports daily from 7.30am to 9.30pm. It only collects a dog you have secured and can wait with, not one still roaming.

A Preston stray is kept for up to seven days; after that, an unclaimed dog is handed to Acorn Kennels to rehome, and the council says it has a non-euthanasia policy. Getting a dog back costs £126. In Blackpool the council's own dog wardens take reports on weekdays, and a kennelled dog must be claimed within 7 days.

What adopting a dog costs around Preston

Homeless Hounds asks a minimum donation of £250 for an adult and £350 for a puppy. At Melling, Carla Lane Animals in Need says its dogs usually cost £300 to £450, puppies at the top of that range. Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W at Tyldesley asks £175 for a greyhound.

Northern Greyhound Rescue asks for a donation without naming a sum, and Labrador Rescue (North West Area) and Easterleigh Animal Sanctuary publish no fee, so ask them.

Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

How rescues around Preston choose adopters

Nobody here lets you walk in and pick a dog: Easterleigh isn't open to visitors at all, and Carla Lane shows animals only by invitation once your questionnaire is in.

  • Homeless Hounds: Lancashire homes only. Its policy takes applications from Lancashire and nowhere further, none from families with children under 5, and a volunteer checks your home before you meet the dog.
  • Easterleigh: no children under 7. Easterleigh asks for an adoption form for the dog you like and keeps long waiting lists.
  • Labrador Rescue: one dog, many applicants. Apply with the button on a particular dog's page; every application for it is weighed together and the best match is contacted.
  • Greyhounds: a home check first. Northern Greyhound Rescue visits your home informally, and comes back after the adoption to see how it is going.

Greyhounds and the RSPCA around Preston

Greyhounds and lurchers were the largest breed group near Preston when we checked on 5 November 2026: Northern Greyhound Rescue keeps its dogs in Lancashire foster homes and boarding kennels, and Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W has kennels at Tyldesley, about 20 miles away, open by arrangement only.

People also search for the RSPCA Preston & District Branch, which has an animal centre on Longridge Road, and the RSPCA Blackpool & North Lancs Branch, whose centre is at Stalmine. Both rehome their own animals through their own sites, and we don't list RSPCA animals.

The law in England

  • Microchipping and change of keeper. In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
  • Lucy's Law: buying a puppy. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
  • Banned dog types. In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
  • XL Bully dogs. In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

Where can I adopt a rescue dog in Preston?

Mostly outside the city. Labrador Rescue (North West Area) is at Eccleston, about 8 miles south; Homeless Hounds and Easterleigh Animal Sanctuary are on the Fylde coast, about 15 miles west; Northern Greyhound Rescue fosters its hounds around Lancashire; and Carla Lane Animals in Need is at Melling, about 20 miles south-west. All list dogs with us, and you apply to the rescue.

How much does it cost to adopt a dog near Preston?

Homeless Hounds asks at least £250 for an adult and £350 for a puppy. Carla Lane Animals in Need usually charges £300 to £450, and Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W £175 for a greyhound. Northern Greyhound Rescue and Labrador Rescue (North West Area) don't publish a figure.

Is there a dog rescue in Blackpool?

Yes. Homeless Hounds has kennels on the Fylde coast and only rehomes within Lancashire, and Easterleigh Animal Sanctuary is based in Blackpool with its dogs in private kennels. Both list dogs with us. The RSPCA Blackpool & North Lancs Branch at Stalmine rehomes its own animals; we don't list them.

What happens to stray dogs found in Preston?

Acorn Kennels runs the stray dog service for Preston City Council. A dog it collects is kept for up to seven days; if nobody claims it, it passes to Acorn Kennels to rehome. An owner pays £126 to get a dog back.

Do rescues near Preston rehome dogs to families with young children?

Some do, with limits. Homeless Hounds won't take applications from families with children under 5, and Easterleigh Animal Sanctuary not with children under 7. Carla Lane Animals in Need says many of its dogs need homes with older children.

How do I rehome my dog in Preston?

Labrador Rescue (North West Area) takes Labradors by email or phone, and Easterleigh Animal Sanctuary has a surrender form but is often full. Our Preston rehoming page has the details.

LocalPetFinder and other pet sites

Tap a question to expand

Is LocalPetFinder the same as Petfinder?

No. LocalPetFinder is an independent UK website and is not connected with Petfinder. We bring together dogs, cats and rabbits from UK rescues and rehoming centres, and every profile links to the rescue that cares for the animal, so you apply with them directly.

How is LocalPetFinder different from Pets4Homes?

Pets4Homes describes itself as the UK’s largest online pet marketplace, connecting buyers with breeders as well as shelters and charities. LocalPetFinder is for adoption: our listings come from rescues and rehoming centres and from owners rehoming their own pet, each checked by a reviewer before it goes live. We do not take adverts from breeders.

Can I find RSPCA animals on LocalPetFinder?

No. We do not list the RSPCA’s animals, at its national centres or its branches. To see them, use RSPCA Find a Pet, the RSPCA’s own search for animals in its centres and branches across England and Wales.
