Adopting a dog in Carlisle

The nearest rescue we list is Oak Tree Animals' Charity at Wetheral Shields, about 4 miles east of the city centre. Penny Jones Animal Hospice is a sanctuary at Hethersgill, about 8.5 miles north east, that rehomes a few of its dogs, and Eden Animal Rescue is at Moorlands Head Farm near Temple Sowerby, filed with us at Penrith, about 17 miles south.

Most rescue dogs around Carlisle are adults, and many are older dogs. Every profile here links to the rescue that cares for the dog, and you apply with them: we don't rehome dogs ourselves.

Carlisle's stray dogs

In England, if you find a stray dog and can't contact the owner, you must report it to the council. For the Carlisle area that is Cumberland Council, which asks for a description of the dog and where it is, and if the dog is in a secure place. An owner whose dog the council has collected pays a fee before it comes home, agreed over the phone.

Oak Tree Animals' Charity has not been a receiving point for stray dogs since March 2015, so don't take a found dog to Wetheral: report it to the council.

What adopting a dog costs near Carlisle

Oak Tree Animals' Charity asks £275 for a dog and £300 for a puppy under 6 months, and may change the fee for a very old dog or one likely to need costly treatment soon.

Eden Animal Rescue asks a minimum donation of £250 for a dog or £380 for a pair, unless a dog's profile says otherwise; the donation is not refundable. Penny Jones Animal Hospice asks a minimum £100 donation towards rescuing another dog.

Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

How rescues near Carlisle decide who adopts

None of the rescues lets you walk round the kennels and choose: Oak Tree's Wetheral site has been open by appointment only since July 2026, and Eden and Penny Jones see adopters by appointment too.

  • A questionnaire, then a reply within 72 hours. At Oak Tree Animals' Charity you fill in a questionnaire for the animal you like, and it aims to reply within 72 hours. A home visit is needed only if there are unusual requirements, and you can sometimes reserve a dog the same day.
  • Photos of your home and garden. Eden Animal Rescue asks you to return its questionnaire with photos of your garden, fencing and where the dog would sleep, plus your landlord's written permission if you rent. You meet and walk the dog over a set period, bring any dog you already have, and Eden visits your home before it decides.
  • Cumbria homes only. Eden doesn't rehome animals out of Cumbria, and Penny Jones Animal Hospice generally doesn't rehome to homes out of its area or with young children. Its process takes up to three weeks.

Other rescues near Carlisle

Silver Fox Dog Rescue has dogs in foster homes, sometimes in Carlisle itself, and asks a £400 adoption donation (£500 for young pups) with a £50 deposit to reserve a dog. Over the border, Alfie's Dream For Greyhounds has its kennels near Lockerbie, about 23 miles away, and says it rehomes in Cumbria; contact it about its greyhounds.

Dogs Trust Cumbria cares for its dogs in foster homes across Cumbria and meets adopters by appointment only. We don't list Dogs Trust dogs, so apply on its own site. Just beyond our 25 miles, Dumfries and Galloway Canine Rescue Centre is at Glencaple, near Dumfries.

The law in England

  • Microchipping and change of keeper. In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
  • Lucy's Law: buying a puppy. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
  • Banned dog types. In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
  • XL Bully dogs. In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

Oak Tree Animals' Charity at Wetheral Shields is about 4 miles east of the city, Penny Jones Animal Hospice at Hethersgill about 8.5 miles north east, and Eden Animal Rescue near Temple Sowerby about 17 miles south. All three list their dogs with us, and you apply to the rescue.

Can I visit Oak Tree Animals' Charity without an appointment?

No. Since July 2026 its Wetheral site has been open by appointment only while flood damage is repaired. Adoptions and viewings carry on by appointment, so fill in its questionnaire first.

What should I do if I find a stray dog in Carlisle?

Report it to Cumberland Council with a description of the dog and where it is. In England strays are the council's job, and Oak Tree Animals' Charity no longer takes in stray dogs.

Can I adopt from Eden Animal Rescue if I live in Carlisle?

Yes. Eden only rehomes within Cumbria, and Carlisle is in Cumbria. Send its questionnaire with photos of your home and garden, and expect to meet and walk the dog over a set period and a home visit before it decides.

Is there a Dogs Trust in Carlisle?

No. Dogs Trust Cumbria cares for its dogs in foster homes across the county and meets adopters by appointment only, so you apply online. We don't list Dogs Trust dogs, so search its own site.

LocalPetFinder and other pet sites

Tap a question to expand

Is LocalPetFinder the same as Petfinder?

No. LocalPetFinder is an independent UK website and is not connected with Petfinder. We bring together dogs, cats and rabbits from UK rescues and rehoming centres, and every profile links to the rescue that cares for the animal, so you apply with them directly.

How is LocalPetFinder different from Pets4Homes?

Pets4Homes describes itself as the UK’s largest online pet marketplace, connecting buyers with breeders as well as shelters and charities. LocalPetFinder is for adoption: our listings come from rescues and rehoming centres and from owners rehoming their own pet, each checked by a reviewer before it goes live. We do not take adverts from breeders.

Can I find RSPCA animals on LocalPetFinder?

No. We do not list the RSPCA’s animals, at its national centres or its branches. To see them, use RSPCA Find a Pet, the RSPCA’s own search for animals in its centres and branches across England and Wales.
