Adopting a dog in Stoke-on-Trent

The nearest dogs we list are at Greyhound Gap, a charity with its own kennels at Kidsgrove, about 6 miles north of the city centre. It takes in mainly greyhounds and lurchers from council stray pounds, and has room for 40 to 50 dogs.

Most other dogs listed here are a drive away: Windyway Animal Rescue at Macclesfield, about 16 miles, Ashbourne Animal Welfare at The Ark in Ashbourne, about 17 miles, and Just For Dogs at Brailsford, about 22 miles. Every profile links to the rescue that cares for the dog, and you apply with them: we don't rehome dogs ourselves.

Stoke-on-Trent's stray dogs

In England, if you find a stray dog and can't contact the owner, you must report it to the council. Stoke-on-Trent City Council takes reports with an online form, and its partner Acorn Kennels handles stray and lost dogs: collection from a home runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 4.30pm, and you can drop a found dog at the kennels from 9am to 6pm any day.

That service covers the city council's area. Newcastle-under-Lyme and the Staffordshire Moorlands have their own councils, so report a dog found there to them. A microchip with up to date details is still the fastest way for a lost dog to get home.

What adopting a dog costs around Stoke-on-Trent

Ashbourne Animal Welfare asks £275 for an adult dog over 12 months, sometimes less for an older dog, and £300 for a puppy. Windyway Animal Rescue asks £160 for a dog or puppy, or £300 for a bonded pair, and Just For Dogs says its fee is normally £400, up or down with the dog's age and breed.

Greyhound Gap doesn't publish a fee, so ask when you get in touch; its dogs leave neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and treated for parasites. Animal Lifeline, which shows its dogs on social media rather than with us, asks a minimum adoption donation of £150.

Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

How rescues around Stoke-on-Trent decide who adopts

None of these rescues lets you turn up and pick a dog: you apply or phone first, and visits are by appointment (Ashbourne Animal Welfare and Just For Dogs both say so).

Animal Lifeline, Cheadle and the RSPCA

Animal Lifeline runs its Serendipity kennels at Cellarhead, on the Leek Road east of the city, and says it rehomes around 300 dogs and puppies a year. Its dogs don't show on our pages, because it posts them on its social media; apply through its own site. Cheadle & District Animal Welfare Society, about 7 miles east, has no kennels of its own and boards or fosters its animals, mostly cats; it lists a few dogs too.

People also search for the RSPCA in Stoke. The RSPCA Staffordshire North Branch says it has not been able to rehome animals since 10 April 2025, and now helps local owners on low incomes with vet bills and neutering. We don't list RSPCA animals.

The law in England

  • Microchipping and change of keeper. In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
  • Lucy's Law: buying a puppy. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
  • Banned dog types. In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
  • XL Bully dogs. In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

Stoke-on-Trent dog adoption FAQ

Tap a question to expand

Where can I adopt a rescue dog in Stoke-on-Trent?

Greyhound Gap has its kennels at Kidsgrove, about 6 miles north, and lists its dogs with us. Further out, Windyway Animal Rescue at Macclesfield, Ashbourne Animal Welfare at Ashbourne and Just For Dogs at Brailsford list dogs too. Animal Lifeline at Cellarhead posts its dogs on social media, so apply through its own site.

How much does it cost to adopt a dog in Stoke-on-Trent?

It depends on the rescue. Ashbourne Animal Welfare asks £275 for an adult dog and £300 for a puppy, Windyway Animal Rescue £160, Just For Dogs normally £400, and Animal Lifeline a minimum donation of £150. Greyhound Gap tells you its fee when you get in touch.

Can I adopt from Animal Lifeline if I live outside Stoke?

Usually not. Animal Lifeline rehomes only to adopters in North Staffordshire and South Cheshire, because it does a home check for every adoption, and only in special circumstances further away.

What should I do if I find a stray dog in Stoke-on-Trent?

Report it to Stoke-on-Trent City Council with its online form. Its partner Acorn Kennels collects found dogs from homes on weekdays from 9am to 4.30pm, and takes drop-offs from 9am to 6pm every day.

Does the RSPCA rehome dogs in Stoke-on-Trent?

Not any more. The RSPCA Staffordshire North Branch says it has had no rehoming facility since 10 April 2025, and now helps owners on low incomes with vet treatment, neutering and microchipping.

How do I rehome my dog in Stoke-on-Trent?

Phone Animal Lifeline's rehoming team first: it takes dogs in by priority. Cheadle & District Animal Welfare Society has a phone line for owners who need help too. Our Stoke-on-Trent rehoming page has every local route.

LocalPetFinder and other pet sites

Tap a question to expand

Is LocalPetFinder the same as Petfinder?

No. LocalPetFinder is an independent UK website and is not connected with Petfinder. We bring together dogs, cats and rabbits from UK rescues and rehoming centres, and every profile links to the rescue that cares for the animal, so you apply with them directly.

How is LocalPetFinder different from Pets4Homes?

Pets4Homes describes itself as the UK’s largest online pet marketplace, connecting buyers with breeders as well as shelters and charities. LocalPetFinder is for adoption: our listings come from rescues and rehoming centres and from owners rehoming their own pet, each checked by a reviewer before it goes live. We do not take adverts from breeders.

Can I find RSPCA animals on LocalPetFinder?

No. We do not list the RSPCA’s animals, at its national centres or its branches. To see them, use RSPCA Find a Pet, the RSPCA’s own search for animals in its centres and branches across England and Wales.
