Rescue cats in and around Belfast

One place to meet rescue cats is inside the city: Kumiko Cat Lounge on the Upper Newtownards Road, a cat lounge run in partnership with Belfast Kitten Rescue, a group that fosters cats in its own homes. Both post their cats on PAW, and we show them from this update.

Further out, Assisi Animal Sanctuary at Conlig, about 10 miles away, and Almost Home Animal Rescue NI at Moira, about 14, both rehome cats. Petal's Place Cat Rescue had two cats in Banbridge on 6 November 2026.

What a rescue cat costs near Belfast

Assisi charges £100 for a cat or kitten. Belfast Kitten Rescue's cats at Kumiko were £90 each, or £180 for a bonded pair, on its PAW listings on 6 November 2026. The Barn asked £80 for a cat on PAW and Paws and People £50. Almost Home doesn't publish a cat fee.

Each rescue sets its own adoption fee, and Cats Protection says you can expect to pay £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten, varying between its branches. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

Adopting a cat from a Belfast rescue

The routes differ more for cats than for dogs (Kumiko, Assisi):

  • Kumiko: meet them first. You book a session at the lounge, fill in its enquiry form if a cat catches your eye, and Belfast Kitten Rescue arranges the adoption itself.
  • Belfast Kitten Rescue: no busy roads. It wants its cats to go outside safely, so it won't rehome to a home on or near a busy road unless a cat's own write-up says it can live indoors.
  • Assisi: no same-day homing. Its steps are a form, a phone call and a visit to meet the cats that suit you.
  • Almost Home: be honest. Its form asks where the cat will live day and night and whether you would take a bonded pair.

Cats Protection and stray cats in Belfast

The Cats Protection Northern Ireland Cat Centre at Dundonald also rehomes cats, though its cats aren't on our pages. Belfast City Council says it has no authority over stray or feral cats, and tells an owner who can no longer keep a cat to sign it over to a local cat rescue.

The law in Northern Ireland

  • Microchipping cats. In Northern Ireland, microchipping a cat is a choice rather than a legal requirement: gov.uk says owners in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland "can choose to microchip" their cat. Compulsory cat microchipping applies in England only.
  • Lucy's Law: buying a kitten. Northern Ireland does not yet have Lucy's Law, so third-party sales of kittens are not banned there yet. DAERA announced on 7 October 2026 that Northern Ireland's own version has been approved and that it intends to bring the regulations forward by the end of 2026, with a lead-in period before they apply (DAERA).

How much does it cost to adopt a cat in Belfast?

Yes, at Kumiko Cat Lounge, where you book a session with the cats. If one suits you, you fill in its enquiry form and Belfast Kitten Rescue arranges the adoption.

Will a Belfast rescue home a cat near a busy road?

Not Belfast Kitten Rescue: it won't rehome to a home on or near a busy road, unless a cat's write-up says it can be an indoor cat.

Who deals with stray cats in Belfast?

Not Belfast City Council, which says it has no authority over stray or feral cats. It suggests Cats Protection for advice, and a local cat rescue for an owner who can no longer keep a cat.

LocalPetFinder and other pet sites

Tap a question to expand

Is LocalPetFinder the same as Petfinder?

No. LocalPetFinder is an independent UK website and is not connected with Petfinder. We bring together dogs, cats and rabbits from UK rescues and rehoming centres, and every profile links to the rescue that cares for the animal, so you apply with them directly.

How is LocalPetFinder different from Pets4Homes?

Pets4Homes describes itself as the UK’s largest online pet marketplace, connecting buyers with breeders as well as shelters and charities. LocalPetFinder is for adoption: our listings come from rescues and rehoming centres and from owners rehoming their own pet, each checked by a reviewer before it goes live. We do not take adverts from breeders.
