Adopting a dog in Nottingham

None of the dog rescues we list has its kennels inside the City of Nottingham, so be ready to travel a little. The nearest is Jerry Green Dog Rescue, whose Nottinghamshire Centre is on Warsop Lane near Blidworth, about 11 miles north. Doggy Dens UK Rescue has its kennels at Cuckney, about 20 miles north.

West of the city, in Derbyshire, Just For Dogs is at Brailsford, about 20 miles away, and Ashbourne Animal Welfare runs The Ark at Ashbourne, about 24 miles away, with kennels, outside runs and 6 acres of grounds.

Greenleaf Animal Rescue and Many Tears Animal Rescue place dogs in foster homes and kennels around the country, so each dog's page says where it is. Every profile here links to the rescue that cares for the dog, and you apply with them: we don't rehome dogs ourselves.

Nottingham's stray dogs

In England, if you find a stray dog and can't contact the owner, you must report it to the council. Nottingham City Council takes reports through the online form on its stray dog page and runs a collection service from Monday to Friday, 9am to 9pm, and on Saturday, 9am to 4pm.

If an owner doesn't collect a seized dog within 7 days, the council becomes its legal owner, and it says most unclaimed strays are rehomed (the council's page). That covers the City of Nottingham only: the districts around it run their own services, and we don't list stray kennel dogs.

What adopting a dog costs near Nottingham

The rescues around Nottingham that publish a fee ask £275 to £450 for an adult dog: £275 at Ashbourne Animal Welfare, which may reduce it for older dogs, £385 for a dog over 20 weeks at Jerry Green Dog Rescue, normally about £400 on average at Just For Dogs, depending on age and breed, and from £450 for a UK dog at Doggy Dens UK Rescue.

A puppy under 12 months is £300 at Ashbourne Animal Welfare, and Jerry Green discusses a puppy's fee once your application is accepted (its FAQs). The fee pays towards vet work already done: Ashbourne's dogs are health checked, microchipped, vaccinated, flea and worm treated, and come with 4 weeks of Petplan insurance if eligible.

Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

How rescues near Nottingham decide who adopts

Each rescue sets its own rules, and these are the ones Nottingham adopters meet most often. Check them on the rescue's own page before you apply (Ashbourne's process).

  • Appointments only. At Jerry Green Dog Rescue you can't walk round the kennels: its Meet&Match process arranges visits by appointment, and you usually can't take a dog home the same day. Just For Dogs holds viewings strictly by appointment, and Ashbourne Animal Welfare calls you after your enquiry form to book a meeting.
  • Fences and the home visit. Doggy Dens UK Rescue needs fencing of at least 5 ft, sometimes higher, visits to see your home and garden, and may ask for references from your previous vets.
  • Children and work. Just For Dogs will rehome to families with young children, older people and people in full time work when it is the right dog, while Doggy Dens UK Rescue rehomes only certain dogs to families with children.
  • Neutering and passing on. Ashbourne Animal Welfare neuters male dogs first and makes spaying a condition of adoption for females, paying for it when the time is right. You also agree not to sell or pass your dog on without its written consent.

Dogs Trust Loughborough and the RSPCA

Some well-known rehoming centres near Nottingham aren't on LocalPetFinder. We don't list their dogs, so search their own sites (Dogs Trust Loughborough).

  • Dogs Trust Loughborough is at Loughborough Hill Farm, Wide Lane, Wymeswold, in Leicestershire, about 11 miles south of the city centre.
  • The RSPCA also rehomes animals; search on its own site.

The law in England

  • Microchipping and change of keeper. In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
  • Lucy's Law: buying a puppy. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
  • Banned dog types. In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
  • XL Bully dogs. In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

In the City of Nottingham, report a stray to the council with its online form; it collects from Monday to Friday, 9am to 9pm, and on Saturday, 9am to 4pm. LocalPetFinder and other pet sites

Tap a question to expand

Is LocalPetFinder the same as Petfinder?

No. LocalPetFinder is an independent UK website and is not connected with Petfinder. We bring together dogs, cats and rabbits from UK rescues and rehoming centres, and every profile links to the rescue that cares for the animal, so you apply with them directly.

How is LocalPetFinder different from Pets4Homes?

Pets4Homes describes itself as the UK’s largest online pet marketplace, connecting buyers with breeders as well as shelters and charities. LocalPetFinder is for adoption: our listings come from rescues and rehoming centres and from owners rehoming their own pet, each checked by a reviewer before it goes live. We do not take adverts from breeders.

Can I find RSPCA animals on LocalPetFinder?

No. We do not list the RSPCA’s animals, at its national centres or its branches. To see them, use RSPCA Find a Pet, the RSPCA’s own search for animals in its centres and branches across England and Wales.
