Adopting a dog in Edinburgh

The one dog rescue we list inside the City of Edinburgh is Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home at Seafield. You apply to the rescue for the dog you want: we don't rehome dogs ourselves, and each rescue runs its own application, visits and fee.

This page also covers about 25 miles around the city, so it shows the greyhounds at Greyhound Rescue Fife, whose kennels are at Gairneybank near Kinross, about 20 miles north of Edinburgh, and the spaniels Springer Rescue Scotland has in foster homes in Fife. When we checked on 29 October 2026 that was 21 greyhounds, 14 dogs at Seafield and 2 Springers in Fife. Each animal's card shows how far it is from Edinburgh.

Found a stray dog in Edinburgh?

In Scotland, a person who finds a stray dog must by law return it to its owner, or take it to the council's officer for the area or to the nearest police station, and say where it was found. A Scottish finder who keeps the dog must keep it for at least one month, and becomes its owner after two months unclaimed.

The mygov.scot stray dog page says to report a dog you can't reunite to your local council, or to your local police station outside normal working hours, and that it is an offence to keep a stray dog without contacting the owner or reporting it. Its council list sends Edinburgh finders to the council's general contact page: the City of Edinburgh Council's dog page covers out of control dogs, and when we searched its site on 26 October 2026 we found no separate stray dog page.

Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home suggests checking the collar for the owner's details, taking a calm dog to a local vet to have its microchip scanned, and reporting the found dog to a local shelter such as the Home. If you can't find the owner and no shelter can take the dog, it says you must report it to your local council dog warden.

What adopting a dog costs in Edinburgh

Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home charges £250 for a dog aged 6 months to 9 years, £350 for a pair, £150 for a dog over 9 and £300 for a puppy. Every animal goes home with a month's pet insurance, and dogs with a small supply of the food they have been eating.

You can also buy its adoption pack for £30, with some of the essentials for your dog, one free training session and two free paddock sessions.

Greyhound Rescue Fife asks for a donation of £180 when you adopt a greyhound; its greyhounds go home vaccinated and neutered, with a special collar, lead and muzzle.

Each rescue sets its own adoption fee, and Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

How Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home decides who adopts

These are its own rules (its rehoming process). Apply only when you are ready: every dog on its site is ready to go, so a rehoming can take as little as a week.

Dogs Trust, the Scottish SPCA and Dog Aid Scotland

Two rehoming centres near Edinburgh, Dogs Trust West Calder and the Scottish SPCA's Balerno centre, are ones we name but don't list. Search their own sites for their dogs.

  • Dogs Trust West Calder is at Bentyhead, West Calder, EH55 8LE, in West Lothian. You can browse on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 4pm; Wednesday and Friday mornings are by pre-arranged appointment.
  • The Scottish SPCA has its Edinburgh & Lothians rescue and rehoming centre in Balerno, EH14 7JU, its oldest centre. The Scottish SPCA also rehomes animals; search on its own site.
  • Dog Aid Scotland, based in Edinburgh, has no kennels: its dogs stay with their owners until a match is found, and then the dog comes to stay with you for two weeks.

More ways to search near Edinburgh

This page's filters narrow the dogs to puppies, older dogs or greyhounds, where Greyhound Rescue Fife's dogs appear. Each dog's card shows its distance from Edinburgh, so you can see which rescue is a short trip and which is a drive.

The law in Scotland

  • Microchipping and change of keeper. In Scotland, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in Scotland can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the Scotland regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
  • Lucy's Law: buying a puppy. In Scotland, Lucy's Law has banned the third-party sale of puppies under six months since 1 September 2021.
  • Banned dog types. In Scotland, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
  • XL Bully dogs. In Scotland, since 23 February 2024 it has been illegal to sell, advertise, gift or exchange an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 August 2024 an offence to own one without an exemption certificate. The Scottish rules also say it is unlawful to "sell, give away or rehome an XL Bully".
  • Rehoming licences. In Scotland, since 1 September 2021, anyone sourcing five or more animals in any 12-month period to rehome as pets needs a licence (Scottish Government). A licence is a useful sign that a Scottish rescue is what it says it is.

Where can I adopt a rescue dog in Edinburgh?

Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home at Seafield is the dog rescue we list in the city, and this page shows its dogs, along with Greyhound Rescue Fife's greyhounds from its kennels near Kinross, about 20 miles north. Dogs Trust West Calder and the Scottish SPCA's centre at Balerno also rehome dogs near Edinburgh; we don't list their dogs, so search their own sites.

How much does it cost to adopt a dog from Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home?

£250 for a dog aged 6 months to 9 years, £350 for a pair, £150 for a dog over 9 and £300 for a puppy. Every dog goes home with a month's pet insurance, and you can buy an optional adoption pack for £30.

Can I visit Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home to see the dogs?

Not as a drop-in: the Home stopped open visits in 2020. Apply online for the dog you want, and if your application fits, it invites you to meet the dog. When several applications fit, it moves forward with the people who can visit earliest.

What should I do if I find a stray dog in Edinburgh?

In Scotland the law says to return the dog to its owner, or take it to the council's officer or the nearest police station and say where you found it. mygov.scot says to report it to your local council, or a police station outside working hours, and that keeping a stray dog without reporting it is an offence. A local vet can scan the dog for a microchip.

Can I see Dogs Trust West Calder dogs on LocalPetFinder?

No. We don't list Dogs Trust dogs, so search Dogs Trust's own site. Dogs Trust West Calder is at Bentyhead, West Calder, EH55 8LE, and you can browse on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 4pm.

Why does an Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home dog need a private garden or an adult only home?

Because of that dog's needs. Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home asks for a private garden when a dog is overwhelmed on walks or reactive to people or dogs, and an adult only home when a dog's behaviour or history calls for it. Some dogs need a home away from the city centre, because busy areas are too overwhelming for them.

LocalPetFinder and other pet sites

Tap a question to expand

Is LocalPetFinder the same as Petfinder?

No. LocalPetFinder is an independent UK website and is not connected with Petfinder. We bring together dogs, cats and rabbits from UK rescues and rehoming centres, and every profile links to the rescue that cares for the animal, so you apply with them directly.

How is LocalPetFinder different from Pets4Homes?

Pets4Homes describes itself as the UK’s largest online pet marketplace, connecting buyers with breeders as well as shelters and charities. LocalPetFinder is for adoption: our listings come from rescues and rehoming centres and from owners rehoming their own pet, each checked by a reviewer before it goes live. We do not take adverts from breeders.

Can I find Scottish SPCA animals on LocalPetFinder?

No. We do not list the Scottish SPCA’s animals, at any of its rescue and rehoming centres. The Scottish SPCA, Scotland’s animal welfare charity, runs its own search: use Scottish SPCA Find a Pet to see the animals at its centres across Scotland. The RSPCA works in England and Wales, not Scotland.
