Adopting a dog in Exeter

No rescue we list has kennels inside the city. The nearest is ARC Animal Rescue Centre on Chineway Road, just outside Ottery St Mary in East Devon, about 10 miles east, which opened its current centre with 16 kennels in 2013. Animals in Distress (Torbay & Westcountry) has its rescue centre at Ipplepen, just outside Newton Abbot, about 17 miles south and a short drive from Torbay.

Every profile here links to the rescue that cares for the dog, and you apply with them: we don't rehome dogs ourselves. ARC says more dogs are being handed in because owners are struggling with money, especially the rising cost of vet treatment.

Exeter's stray dogs

In England, if you find a stray dog and can't contact the owner, you must report it to the council. Exeter City Council recovers and kennels stray dogs found inside the city boundaries, and if you report a dog you have found, it collects the dog from your address and keeps it in kennels for 7 days.

A dog wearing a collar and tag goes home as soon as possible; owners are charged for the service, and for kennelling if the dog went to the kennels. If nobody claims a dog after 7 days, the kennels rehome it. The law already requires a tag with the owner's name and address, so a dog with up to date details gets home far sooner.

What adopting a dog costs near Exeter

ARC Animal Rescue Centre prices each dog and puppy by age and breed, with donations starting at £350, and asks a non-refundable £20 if its staff or volunteers carry out a home check.

Animals in Distress asks £325 for a dog aged 6 months or older and £490 for a puppy under 6 months, and may ask more depending on the breed.

Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

How rescues near Exeter decide who adopts

Neither rescue lets you walk round the kennels and choose: viewing is by appointment, after you get in touch (ARC's adopter information).

  • Call or email, then an appointment. ARC Animal Rescue Centre shows its dogs by appointment only, between 10am and 12 noon and 1pm and 3pm. Its adopter information lists what it will want to know: your household, other pets, the time a dog would spend alone, whether you can afford vet bills or insurance and whether your tenancy allows pets.
  • Within about 30 miles. ARC rehomes within a 30 mile radius, and further out may accept your vet's recommendation case by case. Fence height depends on the dog, and 6 feet is needed for many. It can't hold a dog for you for long, and a dog you can no longer keep must go back to ARC.
  • Apply on the dog's page, then walks. At Animals in Distress you press "Apply to rehome me" on the dog's own page and fill in its questionnaire. If you are successful, the team invites you for a series of walks with the dog, and the kennels are open only by appointment after that. If no listed dog suits you, the same button lets you register a general application.

Dogs Trust in Devon

Dogs Trust has no centre near Exeter. Its Devon centre, Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, is at Hazeldene in North Devon. We don't list Dogs Trust dogs, so search its own site.

  • All the Ilfracombe centre's dogs live in foster homes rather than at the centre, so you apply online and, if there is a match, it arranges for you to meet (Dogs Trust Ilfracombe).

The law in England

  • Microchipping and change of keeper. In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
  • Lucy's Law: buying a puppy. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
  • Banned dog types. In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
  • XL Bully dogs. In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

Where can I adopt a rescue dog in Exeter?

ARC Animal Rescue Centre is on Chineway Road, just outside Ottery St Mary, about 10 miles east of the city. Animals in Distress (Torbay & Westcountry) is at Ipplepen, just outside Newton Abbot, about 17 miles south. Both list their dogs with us, and you apply to the rescue.

How much does it cost to adopt a dog in Exeter?

It depends on the rescue. ARC Animal Rescue Centre prices each dog by age and breed, with donations from £350, plus a non-refundable £20 for a home check. Animals in Distress asks £325 for a dog aged 6 months or older and £490 for a puppy.

Can I visit ARC to see the dogs without an appointment?

No. ARC shows its dogs by appointment only, so call or email the centre first. Appointments run from 10am to 12 noon and 1pm to 3pm every day.

What happens to stray dogs found in Exeter?

Exeter City Council collects strays found inside the city and keeps unidentified dogs in kennels for 7 days. Owners pay for the service and the kennelling. If nobody claims the dog after 7 days, the kennels rehome it. You can report a stray online.

Is there a Dogs Trust in Exeter?

No. Dogs Trust's Devon centre is at Ilfracombe in North Devon, and its dogs live in foster homes, so you apply online. We don't list Dogs Trust dogs, so search its own site.

Do Exeter dog rescues need a garden?

ARC Animal Rescue Centre asks whether you have a secure garden, and says the fence height depends on the dog, with 6 feet needed for many. Ask each rescue about its own rules for the dog you are interested in.

How do I rehome my dog in Exeter?

ARC asks owners who need to rehome an animal to get in touch, and Animals in Distress has a dog intake form for dogs from its local area in Devon, with a waiting list. Our Exeter rehoming page has the details.

LocalPetFinder and other pet sites

Tap a question to expand

Is LocalPetFinder the same as Petfinder?

No. LocalPetFinder is an independent UK website and is not connected with Petfinder. We bring together dogs, cats and rabbits from UK rescues and rehoming centres, and every profile links to the rescue that cares for the animal, so you apply with them directly.

How is LocalPetFinder different from Pets4Homes?

Pets4Homes describes itself as the UK’s largest online pet marketplace, connecting buyers with breeders as well as shelters and charities. LocalPetFinder is for adoption: our listings come from rescues and rehoming centres and from owners rehoming their own pet, each checked by a reviewer before it goes live. We do not take adverts from breeders.

Can I find RSPCA animals on LocalPetFinder?

No. We do not list the RSPCA’s animals, at its national centres or its branches. To see them, use RSPCA Find a Pet, the RSPCA’s own search for animals in its centres and branches across England and Wales.
