Adopting a dog in Lincoln

The nearest dog kennels we list are at Cottam, near Retford, about 10 miles north-west, where Doris Banham Dog Rescue keeps dogs it has taken out of council pounds; visits there are by appointment only. Retired racers wait at Crossing Cottage Greyhound Sanctuary in Sutton-on-Trent, just north of Newark.

Further out, around 23 to 25 miles away, sit RAIN Rescue at Misson, both Jerry Green Dog Rescue centres (Broughton, near Brigg, and near Blidworth) and Doggy Dens UK Rescue at Cuckney. Every dog's profile links to its rescue, and you apply there, not to LocalPetFinder.

Stray dogs in Lincoln

In the city, City of Lincoln Council collects strays in office hours, Monday to Friday, and keeps an unclaimed dog for at least seven days. Report a lost or found dog on its online form; outside those hours you ring the council and look after the dog until the next working day.

An owner reclaiming a dog pays a kennel fee of £13 a day in 2026/27, and a £25 penalty on a second offence. Keeping a stray you found is only allowed with the council's written agreement.

What adopting a dog costs around Lincoln

Doris Banham Dog Rescue asks £250, which it doesn't refund if the dog comes back except in exceptional circumstances. Crossing Cottage recommends £250 for a greyhound, with a collar, lead, muzzle and five weeks of insurance.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue charges £385 for a dog over 20 weeks, RAIN Rescue generally £250 to £350 (each dog's profile shows its fee), and Doggy Dens UK Rescue from £450.

Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

How rescues near Lincoln choose adopters

Apply first, then expect a home check: Doris Banham, Crossing Cottage, RAIN Rescue and Doggy Dens all look at your home before a dog leaves.

  • Cottam: pound dogs, little history. Doris Banham says it often knows nothing of a dog's past, won't home to families with children under 5, and can't cat test dogs at the kennels, so apply with a cat only if the write-up says the dog is fine with cats.
  • Greyhounds: no resident cats. Crossing Cottage can't take an enquiry from a home with a cat, and wants resident children to be at least 7. Expect the home check within 7 to 14 days.
  • Jerry Green: Meet&Match. Its Broughton centre books every meeting and, as a rule, won't let a dog go home the same day.
  • Doggy Dens: 5 ft fences. Doggy Dens UK Rescue asks for fencing of at least 5 feet and looks at every exit of your garden.

Who rescues dogs around Lincoln

Doris Banham Dog Rescue has its registered address in North Hykeham and its kennels at Cottam, in Nottinghamshire; more than half the dogs on its list were first posted over a year ago. Crossing Cottage Greyhound Sanctuary brands its website "Retired Greyhound Trust East Midlands", but it is an independent charity, not part of the national Greyhound Trust.

RAIN Rescue works from Misson by appointment and won't reserve a dog before a home check and a meet and greet. Our Jerry Green Dog Rescue page shows the dogs at both of its centres in range.

The law in England

  • Microchipping and change of keeper. In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
  • Lucy's Law: buying a puppy. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
  • Banned dog types. In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
  • XL Bully dogs. In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

City of Lincoln Council collects them in office hours and keeps an unclaimed dog for at least seven days. An owner pays a kennel fee of £13 a day to get a dog back, and a £25 penalty on a second offence.

Can I adopt a dog near Lincoln if I have a cat?

That varies by rescue. Crossing Cottage takes no enquiries from homes with a cat, and Doris Banham can't test its kennel dogs with cats, so it only suggests a dog whose write-up says it is fine with them.

LocalPetFinder and other pet sites

Tap a question to expand

Is LocalPetFinder the same as Petfinder?

No. LocalPetFinder is an independent UK website and is not connected with Petfinder. We bring together dogs, cats and rabbits from UK rescues and rehoming centres, and every profile links to the rescue that cares for the animal, so you apply with them directly.

How is LocalPetFinder different from Pets4Homes?

Pets4Homes describes itself as the UK’s largest online pet marketplace, connecting buyers with breeders as well as shelters and charities. LocalPetFinder is for adoption: our listings come from rescues and rehoming centres and from owners rehoming their own pet, each checked by a reviewer before it goes live. We do not take adverts from breeders.

Can I find RSPCA animals on LocalPetFinder?

No. We do not list the RSPCA’s animals, at its national centres or its branches. To see them, use RSPCA Find a Pet, the RSPCA’s own search for animals in its centres and branches across England and Wales.
