Adopting a dog in Norwich

Before this update we had almost no dogs listed around Norwich. Four Norfolk rescues now add theirs. The nearest is Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders, which despite its name keeps retired racers in rented kennels at Hainford, about 6 miles north of the city.

Out towards the Broads, FAITH Animal Rescue at Hickling, about 15 miles north-east, runs kennels where its dogs can mix and play. The Norfolk & Suffolk Animal Trust (NASAT) uses kennels on Fremantle Road in Great Yarmouth that were once the police pound for strays, about 18 miles east. PACT Animal Sanctuary at Woodrising, near Hingham, west of Norwich, lists dogs as well as cats.

Lost and stray dogs in Norwich

Under England's rules a stray goes to the council when its owner can't be traced (GOV.UK). Norwich City Council hands this to Animal Warden Services (AWS), which checks each dog for a chip or tag, contacts the owner where it can, and keeps a found dog register owners can search.

Getting your dog back costs £25 if it is chipped or tagged and goes home the same day, and £75 if it isn't chipped but still goes home that day. If an unchipped dog has to go to kennels, the charge is £125 plus £17 a night and any vet bills, and a second offence within 12 months adds £60.

What adopting a dog costs near Norwich

Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders charges £200, and that includes a leather collar and lead, a muzzle and 4 weeks of free Petplan insurance. NASAT asks £300 in two parts: a £50 deposit, not refunded, once your home check passes, then £250 when you collect.

PACT sets minimum donations of £350 for an adult dog, £400 for a puppy of 6 to 12 months and £450 for one under 6 months. FAITH publishes no figure, so ask it.

Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

How Norfolk dog rescues near Norwich pick homes

All four want an application before you meet a dog, and each sets its own conditions on its own pages (NASAT, PACT):

  • Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders: a garden first. It homes a greyhound without a garden only in exceptional circumstances, will consider a ground-floor flat with garden access, and needs written permission if you rent. A home checker visits, then you book a time to sign and take your hound home.
  • NASAT: no young children. It can't accept applications from homes with children under 10. You meet the dog at the kennels, bring your own dog to a second meeting, and two of its team check your home; some dogs can live without a garden.
  • PACT: three visits. Its rules ask for a private enclosed garden with fences of 4 to 6 ft, no flats or shared gardens, pet insurance, and at least three visits to the dog, with everyone in the household meeting it.
  • FAITH: forms by appointment. It shows dogs only by appointment after reading your form, keeps your details for 2 months, and checks your home first. Its adoption agreement asks for a slip lead on walks.

Hillside and Dogs Trust Snetterton

Two well-known places to find a dog in Norfolk are not on this page. Hillside Animal Sanctuary at Frettenham, north of the city, rehomes dogs to people in the Norfolk area for a minimum donation of £325; we don't list its dogs, so look on its own pages. Dogs Trust Snetterton, south-west of Norwich, lets visitors browse on five afternoons a week; its dogs aren't on our pages either.

The law in England

  • Microchipping and change of keeper. In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
  • Lucy's Law: buying a puppy. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
  • Banned dog types. In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
  • XL Bully dogs. In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

From Norfolk rescues just outside the city: Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders at Hainford, about 6 miles north, FAITH Animal Rescue at Hickling, NASAT in Great Yarmouth and PACT Animal Sanctuary at Woodrising. Each of the four puts its dogs on our pages from this update, and you apply to the rescue itself.

How much does it cost to adopt a dog near Norwich?

Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders charges £200, NASAT £300 (a £50 deposit, then £250 on collection), and PACT asks at least £350 for an adult dog. FAITH doesn't publish a fee.

Who deals with stray dogs in Norwich?

Are Hillside Animal Sanctuary's dogs on LocalPetFinder?

No. Hillside at Frettenham rehomes dogs in Norfolk, but we don't list them, and Dogs Trust Snetterton's dogs aren't on our pages either. Check both of their own websites as well as this page.

Can I adopt a dog near Norwich if I have young children?

It depends on the rescue. NASAT won't take applications from homes with children under 10, PACT asks everyone in the household to meet the dog, and FAITH checks your home before any adoption.

Do I need a garden to adopt a dog near Norwich?

For a greyhound from Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders, almost always, and PACT asks for a private enclosed garden. NASAT says some of its dogs can manage without one if they get daily exercise.

FAITH Animal Rescue keeps a waiting list you join through its form, and NASAT has a dog surrender form. Our Norwich rehoming page lists every route, including an advert with us.

LocalPetFinder and other pet sites

Tap a question to expand

Is LocalPetFinder the same as Petfinder?

No. LocalPetFinder is an independent UK website and is not connected with Petfinder. We bring together dogs, cats and rabbits from UK rescues and rehoming centres, and every profile links to the rescue that cares for the animal, so you apply with them directly.

How is LocalPetFinder different from Pets4Homes?

Pets4Homes describes itself as the UK’s largest online pet marketplace, connecting buyers with breeders as well as shelters and charities. LocalPetFinder is for adoption: our listings come from rescues and rehoming centres and from owners rehoming their own pet, each checked by a reviewer before it goes live. We do not take adverts from breeders.

Can I find RSPCA animals on LocalPetFinder?

No. We do not list the RSPCA’s animals, at its national centres or its branches. To see them, use RSPCA Find a Pet, the RSPCA’s own search for animals in its centres and branches across England and Wales.
