Hull has its own dog rescue inside the city: Oakwood Dog Rescue, whose kennels are on the Sutton Fields estate in north Hull. Founded in 2009, it rehomes UK dogs and ex-street dogs from overseas, many of them from Romania, and every one goes home neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
The rest are a short drive out. Hull Animal Welfare Trust runs the Sunnydene shelter at South Cave, about 11 miles west, and Hull Greyhound Rescue has its kennels at Leconfield, near Beverley, about 10 miles north. Across the Humber, Jerry Green Dog Rescue has its North Lincolnshire Centre at Broughton, near Brigg, about 15 miles away. Every profile here links to the rescue that cares for the dog, and you apply with them: we don't rehome dogs ourselves.
In England, if you find a stray dog and can't contact the owner, you must report it to the council. Hull City Council takes reports online or by phone, and its dog wardens pick up strays from 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. At weekends and on bank holidays, between 9.30am and 5pm, you can take a stray to the council's kennelling provider, Hull Animal Welfare Trust at South Cave, after phoning ahead.
A dog nobody can identify is kept for 7 days so its owner can claim it, and is then available for rehoming through Hull Animal Welfare Trust. Owners pay to get a dog back: £56 for a first offence if they collect within 3 days, with daily kennel fees after that, so a microchip with up to date details is the fastest way home.
Oakwood Dog Rescue sets its donation by age: £350 for a dog under 1, £250 from 1 to 6, £180 from 7 to 9 and £50 for a dog of 10 or older, with pure or rare breeds up to £350. You pay a £100 reservation donation on the day you choose a dog, which is not refundable.
Hull Animal Welfare Trust asks £300 for a crossbreed over 8 months, £400 or more for a puppy under 8 months and £350 or more for a pedigree. Jerry Green Dog Rescue asks £385 for a dog over 20 weeks.
Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
None of the rescues lets you walk round the kennels and pick: you apply or phone first, and visits are by appointment (Hull Animal Welfare Trust and Jerry Green's North Lincolnshire Centre both say so).
Hull Greyhound Rescue is a volunteer-run charity rehoming retired racing greyhounds from its Leconfield kennels, and asks adopters to consider its older dogs. South of the Humber, Immingham Dogs Home at South Killingholme, about 9 miles from Hull, focuses on dogs from North Lincolnshire; its dogs don't show on our pages, so look on its own site, where each profile describes the home the dog needs; ask the rescue about the fee.
People also search for the RSPCA Hull & East Riding Branch, an independent branch of the RSPCA with an animal rescue centre on Clough Road. It rehomes its own animals through its own site, and we don't list RSPCA animals.

Oakwood Dog Rescue has its kennels in Hull itself, on the Sutton Fields estate. Hull Animal Welfare Trust is at South Cave, about 11 miles west, Hull Greyhound Rescue at Leconfield, about 10 miles north, and Jerry Green Dog Rescue near Brigg, about 15 miles south across the Humber. All list their dogs with us, and you apply to the rescue.
It depends on the rescue and the dog. Oakwood Dog Rescue asks £250 for a dog aged 1 to 6, £350 under 1, £180 from 7 to 9 and £50 for a dog of 10 or more. Hull Animal Welfare Trust asks £300 for a crossbreed over 8 months, and Jerry Green Dog Rescue £385 for a dog over 20 weeks.
Only by appointment, after you apply. Oakwood emails you when it has a suitable match, then books a viewing at the centre for your whole household, and expects you to decide on the day.
Report a stray to Hull City Council, whose wardens collect strays on weekdays from 8am to 4pm. A dog nobody claims within 7 days becomes available for rehoming through Hull Animal Welfare Trust, the council's kennelling provider at South Cave.
It is harder. Oakwood Dog Rescue does not rehome to homes with children under 10 unless it has advertised a suitable dog, because so many of its dogs have unknown histories. Hull Animal Welfare Trust and Jerry Green Dog Rescue say on each profile whether a dog can live with children.
Yes. The RSPCA Hull & East Riding Branch has an animal rescue centre on Clough Road and rehomes its own animals through its own site. We don't list RSPCA animals, so search its site and apply to it directly.
Hull City Council doesn't rehome pets. Oakwood Dog Rescue has a hand-in form and a waiting list, and Jerry Green Dog Rescue can sometimes find a home while your dog stays with you. Our Hull rehoming page has the details.

No. LocalPetFinder is an independent UK website and is not connected with Petfinder. We bring together dogs, cats and rabbits from UK rescues and rehoming centres, and every profile links to the rescue that cares for the animal, so you apply with them directly.
Pets4Homes describes itself as the UK’s largest online pet marketplace, connecting buyers with breeders as well as shelters and charities. LocalPetFinder is for adoption: our listings come from rescues and rehoming centres and from owners rehoming their own pet, each checked by a reviewer before it goes live. We do not take adverts from breeders.
No. We do not list the RSPCA’s animals, at its national centres or its branches. To see them, use RSPCA Find a Pet, the RSPCA’s own search for animals in its centres and branches across England and Wales.
