The short answer

The dog rescue in Hull itself is Oakwood Dog Rescue, on the Sutton Fields estate, where a dog aged 1 to 6 costs £250 and you meet your match at the centre after applying online. Hull Animal Welfare Trust at South Cave, about 11 miles west, asks £300 for a crossbreed and also takes in the city's unclaimed strays. For a greyhound, Hull Greyhound Rescue is at Leconfield, about 10 miles north. Apply or phone before you visit any of them: none lets you walk in and choose.

Rescue adoption fees
Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
Oakwood Dog Rescue

Hull Animal Welfare Trust

Owning a dog
PDSA puts the minimum lifetime cost of a dog at £6,200 to £18,800, depending on the breed (its 2024 figures, not counting buying the dog).

How each rescue near Hull works

The rescues work quite differently, and Oakwood in particular moves fast once it has a match, so read its section before you apply.

Oakwood Dog Rescue, Hull

Founded in 2009, Oakwood Dog Rescue is the only rescue we list with kennels inside the city, at Sutton Fields in north Hull, and its dogs are on our Oakwood page. It rehomes UK dogs and ex-street dogs from overseas, many from Romania, and its goal is one home only: matching each dog carefully so it stays in the first home it finds. Every dog goes home neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped, with 5 weeks' free Agria insurance, and it requires you to insure the dog for life.

You apply online, then wait: its adoption team emails only when a suitable dog is at the centre. Next you send photo ID and proof of address for everyone over 16, plus photos of your garden boundary, and have a screening call. Then the whole household, and any dog you already have, comes to a viewing. Oakwood expects you to decide that day and pay a £100 reservation donation, which is not refundable. You then have 48 hours to get ready, pass a home check by video call and collect the dog.

Its requirements rule some homes out: adopters must be 21 or older (60 and over need a younger back up), with a secure garden attached to the home and a padlocked gate. Fence height decides your matches, with 6 foot fencing giving the most. It won't rehome to a home with children under 10, or with a dog under a year old, and a dog should not be left alone for more than 5 hours a day. Don't apply if you are moving house or have a holiday booked in the next 3 months.

Hull Animal Welfare Trust, South Cave

Hull Animal Welfare Trust began as a volunteer club in 1982 and runs the Sunnydene shelter at Pinfold, South Cave, about 11 miles west of the city. It says it has rehomed over 30,000 animals and that no healthy animal is ever destroyed. Its dogs are on our Hull Animal Welfare Trust page.

It rehomes across Hull and the East Riding. Many of its dogs come in through the stray system, as it kennels Hull's strays for the council, and others when an owner dies, falls ill or can no longer cope. Every dog is neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. You fill in a form, and it checks with your vet, visits your home or both; only after a good check can you reserve the dog. Viewing is by appointment, booked by phone between 11am and 2pm, any day of the year.

Hull Greyhound Rescue, Leconfield

A volunteer-run charity rehoming retired racing greyhounds from kennels at Leconfield, near Beverley, about 10 miles north. Hull Greyhound Rescue is self-funded and won't put a greyhound to sleep except on health grounds. You contact its volunteers by email or phone, and they arrange a home visit when needed. It asks adopters to consider its gentle older dogs, and its dogs are on our Hull Greyhound Rescue page. Our Hull greyhound guide covers it in detail.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue's North Lincolnshire Centre

South of the Humber, Jerry Green Dog Rescue has a centre at Broughton, near Brigg, about 15 miles from Hull and the closest rescue we list to Scunthorpe. It is open 7 days a week from 10am to 3pm, but you can't walk round the kennels: its Meet&Match visits are by appointment, and you usually can't take a dog home the same day, because the contract, the microchip transfer and the fee come first. Its fee is £385 for a dog over 20 weeks, and its profiles say when a dog can live with children.

Linbee Dog Rehoming, Goole

At the western edge of the 25 miles, about 22 miles from Hull, Linbee Dog Rehoming is a volunteer-run rescue at Lowgate, Goole. Viewings are between 10am and 12 noon every day, strictly by appointment, and the dog is brought out to you. Everyone in the household and any resident dog comes to a meet and greet, then a volunteer checks for a secure rear garden with at least a 5 foot fence, depending on the dog. Most of its dogs are strays, and as a rule it won't rehome to homes with children under 5.

Immingham Dogs Home, South Killingholme

Immingham Dogs Home has kennels on Habrough Road at South Killingholme, about 9 miles from Hull across the Humber, and says its primary focus is dogs from North Lincolnshire. Its dogs don't show on our pages, so read the profiles on its own site, which describe the home each dog needs; some give the fee, and for the others ask the rescue. Its steps are an application, a volunteer review, a home check or meeting, then adoption day.

How to choose between them

Start with the dog, not the rescue: our Hull dogs page lists the dogs at every rescue above except Immingham, so filter by size, age or breed and see who has it. Then weigh these five things:

  • Children. Oakwood does not rehome to homes with children under 10 unless it has advertised a suitable dog, and Linbee not with children under 5. Hull Animal Welfare Trust and Jerry Green say on each profile whether a dog can live with children.
  • Your garden. Oakwood needs a secure garden attached to your home and matches by fence height; Linbee checks for at least 5 feet. Ask about the fence the dog you like will need.
  • Your other dog. Oakwood mostly pairs a new dog with one of the opposite sex, needs your dog neutered, and won't rehome to a home with a dog under a year old. Oakwood and Linbee want your dog at the meeting; ask the others.
  • How fast you can decide. Oakwood asks for a decision at the viewing and collection within 48 hours; Jerry Green usually needs more than one visit. Pick the pace that suits you.
  • The fee. Oakwood's fees fall with age, to £50 for a dog of 10 or older; Hull Animal Welfare Trust's start at £300 for a crossbreed; Jerry Green's is £385.

Grimsby, Immingham and Scunthorpe

For Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Immingham, the nearest rescue we know of is Immingham Dogs Home at South Killingholme, about 8 miles from Grimsby; look on its own site for its dogs. Our Grimsby dogs page shows Hull's whole list, measured from Grimsby.

For Scunthorpe, Brigg and Barton-upon-Humber, Jerry Green's North Lincolnshire Centre at Broughton is about 4 miles from Scunthorpe, and our Scunthorpe dogs page lists its dogs near the top. In England a stray found on the south bank is reported to the local council, as in Hull.

Is there a dog pound in Hull?

Not one you can visit to choose a dog. Hull City Council's dog wardens collect strays on weekdays from 8am to 4pm, and its kennelling provider is Hull Animal Welfare Trust at South Cave. A dog nobody can identify is kept for 7 days, then becomes available for rehoming through the trust, so the city's unclaimed strays turn up among its dogs.

People also search for the RSPCA Hull & East Riding Branch, an independent local branch of the RSPCA with an animal rescue centre on Clough Road. It rehomes its own animals through its own site. We don't list RSPCA animals, so you won't see its dogs on our pages: look on its site and apply to it directly.

What dogs come into rescue around Hull

Many of Oakwood's dogs are ex-street dogs from Romania, and its own page on them is frank: most have never lived in a home, so televisions, stairs and gaps in a fence are all new, and they need patient owners. Before travelling, each is tested for diseases including heartworm and leishmaniasis and vaccinated, rabies included. Oakwood also warns that many of its dogs don't walk on a lead when they arrive, which is why it insists on a garden, and that settling in can take 3 months or more.

Hull Animal Welfare Trust's dogs are mostly local: strays from the city and dogs whose owners could no longer keep them. On 2 November 2026 the dogs listed with us around Hull were mainly crossbreeds, with greyhounds at Leconfield, several lurchers and a few French Bulldogs. The live count on our Hull dogs page is always the current picture, and our rescue puppies guide explains how to find a young dog.

The law in England

Microchipping and change of keeper

In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.

Lucy's Law: buying a puppy

In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Banned dog types

In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.

XL Bully dogs

In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).
