Adopting a dog in Peterborough
Five dog rescues around Peterborough join our pages with this update. The nearest is Animal Helpline, whose kennels are at Wansford, about 7 miles west; the searches for "Wansford dog rescue" mean this charity. Three Counties Dog Rescue has kennels on the edge of Bourne, about 15 miles north, and had the most dogs of any of them when we checked on 6 November 2026.
Retired racing greyhounds wait at a kennel near Spalding with the Peterborough & Lincolnshire Greyhound Trust and at GREYS Finding Homes For Hounds, a non profit homing kennel at March about 14 miles east. Ravenswood Pet Rescue, a small independent rescue near Wisbech, has a dog or two. Jerry Green Dog Rescue's South Lincolnshire centre at Algarkirk, about 24 miles away, was already on our Peterborough pages.
Lost and stray dogs in Peterborough
In England an unclaimed stray goes to the council (GOV.UK). Peterborough City Council sends stray reports to its dog warden, Midland Environment Contracts Ltd, from Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm; at weekends it arranges for finders to take a dog to an acceptance point between 9.30am and 4.30pm. A stray is held for seven days, and an unclaimed dog then belongs to the kennels or rehoming centre, which assesses it for a new home. Owners pay a fine to get a dog back; the council doesn't publish the amount.
What adopting a dog costs around Peterborough
Three Counties Dog Rescue asks a minimum of £250 for a dog, paid once the trial weeks are over. Animal Helpline hopes for a donation of £400, Ravenswood Pet Rescue asks a minimum of £395 a dog, and Jerry Green Dog Rescue charges £385 for a dog over 20 weeks. The greyhound branch doesn't publish its fee, so ask when you call, and GREYS charges no rehoming fee at all, though it welcomes donations.
Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
How the dog rescues near Peterborough match you with a dog
Each rescue sets its own steps. Three Counties and Animal Helpline both see adopters at their kennels by appointment only:
- Three Counties: a visit, a pause, then a trial. Its rehoming page asks the whole household to visit by appointment, with any dog you have, then to go home and think before saying yes. A home check follows, then about two weeks at home before ownership passes to you. It rehomes only within a 50 mile drive of Bourne.
- Animal Helpline: a call first. It starts with a phone interview, then a visit to the kennels by appointment with all the family, then a home check. It wants a fully fenced garden and a dog never left over 4 hours without a break.
- Greyhounds: a talk, then a meeting. The branch discusses your home, work hours and other pets, arranges for you to meet suitable hounds and does a home check where needed. Its hounds can go anywhere in the country.
Woodgreen and the RSPCA near Peterborough
The biggest rehoming centres near the city don't list their animals with us. Woodgreen Pets Charity has its rehoming centre at Godmanchester, about 18 miles south, and sees adopters by appointment once they have applied. The RSPCA Block Fen Animal Centre rehomes animals in the Fens too. Search both sites as well as ours.

The law in England
- Microchipping and change of keeper. In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
- Lucy's Law: buying a puppy. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
- Banned dog types. In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
- XL Bully dogs. In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

LocalPetFinder and other pet sites
Tap a question to expand
Is LocalPetFinder the same as Petfinder?
No. LocalPetFinder is an independent UK website and is not connected with Petfinder. We bring together dogs, cats and rabbits from UK rescues and rehoming centres, and every profile links to the rescue that cares for the animal, so you apply with them directly.
How is LocalPetFinder different from Pets4Homes?
Pets4Homes describes itself as the UK’s largest online pet marketplace, connecting buyers with breeders as well as shelters and charities. LocalPetFinder is for adoption: our listings come from rescues and rehoming centres and from owners rehoming their own pet, each checked by a reviewer before it goes live. We do not take adverts from breeders.
Can I find RSPCA animals on LocalPetFinder?
No. We do not list the RSPCA’s animals, at its national centres or its branches. To see them, use RSPCA Find a Pet, the RSPCA’s own search for animals in its centres and branches across England and Wales.
