How each dog rescue near Peterborough works

They differ most in how you first meet a dog and what happens before it comes home.

Animal Helpline, Wansford

This is the "Wansford dog rescue" people search for. Its dogs are mostly strays and abandoned dogs, plus some handed in by owners, and it keeps a few long-term residents. It says most new dogs go on its Facebook page before its website.

Its process starts with a phone interview, then a visit to the kennels by appointment with the whole family and any dog you have, then a home check. It wants a fully fenced garden and a dog never left over 4 hours without a break, follows up after a few months, and takes its dogs back if a home doesn't work out.

Three Counties Dog Rescue, Bourne

Founded in 1971 in Hampshire and later re-formed in Lincolnshire, it has rehomed more than 7,000 dogs and cats, with volunteers doing the rehoming. It has a non-destruction policy and keeps a Golden Oldies page for older dogs. It rehomes only within a 50 mile drive of Bourne.

You visit by appointment with everyone in the household and any dog you have, then go home to think before saying yes. A home check follows, then the dog lives with you for about two weeks before ownership passes over and you pay, by cheque or cash. The dog must live indoors, and it goes back to the rescue if you can't keep it.

Peterborough & Lincolnshire Greyhound Trust, near Spalding

This Lincolnshire branch of the Greyhound Trust works inside a racing kennel, where most retired hounds wait in the block they raced from. Its list had 18 greyhounds on 6 November 2026, aged from nearly two to six.

Hounds leave neutered, vaccinated, flea treated and wormed, with food and a collar and lead, and lifetime backup. It doesn't publish its fee, so ask. It warns that some greyhounds can live with cats and some cannot.

GREYS Finding Homes For Hounds, March

A non profit greyhound homing kennel at March, which charges no rehoming fee and leaves donations up to you. On 7 November 2026 its list had 7 hounds available and 12 reserved entries, most reserved in October or November.

You start with an enquiry form and a call about your home, then meet hounds at the kennels, ideally more than once. It tests each hound with small dogs and children, and only some with cats, then does a home check. Hounds leave neutered, with a collar, lead, muzzle, a bag of food and 4 weeks of free insurance, and it will rehome to a flat or a home without a garden.

Ravenswood Pet Rescue, near Wisbech

A small independent rescue on the Cambridgeshire and Norfolk border, self financed and run by a few people. You fill in a questionnaire, then a home check, often done by another small rescue near you, and it neuters the dog before you take it where age and health allow.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue, Algarkirk

Its South Lincolnshire centre near Boston has rehomed dogs since 1997. You can't walk round the kennels: visits are by appointment through its Meet&Match process, and the fee is £385 for a dog over 20 weeks.

Choosing a dog rescue from Peterborough

Our Peterborough dogs page shows who is waiting; weigh these points before you apply:

  • Distance rules. Three Counties homes only within a 50 mile drive of Bourne; Animal Helpline asks you to come to the kennels and won't deliver a dog; the greyhound branch and Ravenswood rehome further afield.
  • Children. Three Counties says it is cautious about homing dogs with young children and sets an age on each dog's profile.
  • Time alone. Animal Helpline wants a dog never left over 4 hours without a break; Three Counties suggests a leaving time on each dog's description.
  • A cat at home. The greyhound branch says some hounds live happily with cats and some cannot, so ask about the one you like.

Dog rescue from Spalding

From Spalding, the greyhound kennels are close to the town, Jerry Green's Algarkirk centre is about 8 miles away and Three Counties at Bourne about 10. Our Spalding dogs page measures from there.

What happens to stray dogs in Peterborough?

Peterborough City Council passes stray reports to its dog warden, Midland Environment Contracts Ltd, from Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, and arranges a weekend drop-off point for finders. A stray is held for seven days under the Environmental Protection Act 1990; if nobody claims it, it belongs to the kennels or rehoming centre, which assesses it for a new home.

Woodgreen and the RSPCA near Peterborough

Two big centres rehome dogs near the city and don't list them with us. Woodgreen Pets Charity runs its rehoming centre at Godmanchester, about 18 miles south, and books visits only after you apply. The RSPCA Block Fen Animal Centre rehomes animals in the Fens. Search both, and for a young dog read our rescue puppies guide. Buying a pup costs £400 to £3,000, Blue Cross says.

The law in England

Microchipping and change of keeper

In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.

Lucy's Law: buying a puppy

In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Banned dog types

In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.

XL Bully dogs

In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).
