Adopting a dog in Kendal

The rescue on Kendal's doorstep is Animal Rescue Cumbria, whose shelter is at Grayrigg, just outside the town. The other dogs on this page come from rescues further out: Animal Care Lancaster Morecambe & District at Lancaster, about 20 miles south, Wolfwood at Ellel, about 23 miles, and Eden Animal Rescue near Penrith, about 23 miles north.

Every profile links to the rescue that cares for the dog, and you apply with them: we don't rehome dogs ourselves. For a retired racing greyhound, Retired Greyhounds South Lakes at Witherslack, about 8 miles away, keeps its dogs in its own home rather than kennels.

Kendal's stray dogs

In England, if you find a stray dog and can't contact the owner, you must report it to the council. For Kendal that is Westmorland and Furness Council, whose stray dog page for the South Lakeland area says a stray is picked up and either returned to its owner or taken to its contracted kennels. Rescues can't take strays straight off the street: Animal Rescue Cumbria asks you not to bring a found dog to its shelter.

Owners pay to reclaim a dog, from £79 on the first day to £166.60 by the seventh, with £57.50 more for a second offence. The council says every dog unclaimed after seven days becomes its property and is rehomed where possible by its kennels, microchipped, vaccinated and neutered.

What adopting a dog costs near Kendal

Animal Rescue Cumbria asks £300 for a dog and £350 for a puppy, and its fees are not refundable. Animal Care Lancaster asks a minimum donation of £150 for a dog, which goes home neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea treated.

Eden Animal Rescue asks a minimum donation of £250 for a dog, or £380 for two, unless a dog's profile says otherwise. Retired Greyhounds South Lakes asks a minimum non-refundable donation of £250 for a greyhound. Wolfwood publishes no fee, so ask when you call.

Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

How rescues near Kendal decide who adopts

None of them lets you walk round the kennels and pick a dog on the day. You enquire about a particular dog first, and the rescue decides whether it is a match (Animal Rescue Cumbria's adoption guide).

  • Enquire, then meet, then sleep on it. Animal Rescue Cumbria contacts you if your home looks a good match, then invites you to walk the dog round its field, with your own dog if you have one. It never lets a dog go home on the first appointment. Renters need a letter from the landlord, and it may ask your old vet for a reference.
  • Three visits and a trial week. At Animal Care Lancaster you apply on its form; if you haven't heard within 7 days, the application hasn't succeeded. After a home check it asks you to visit the dog 3 times within 5 to 7 days, then take it home for a week's trial before you adopt.
  • Three full days out. Wolfwood shows its dogs by appointment only and expects three separate full days out with the dog before you adopt. It won't rehome to someone out at work full time unless the dog can go too or gets regular breaks, and it warns that many dogs can jump 1.5 metres.
  • Cumbria only at Eden. Eden Animal Rescue does not rehome animals outside Cumbria, so it suits Kendal and Barrow homes but not Lancashire ones.

Dogs Trust and the RSPCA around Kendal

Dogs Trust Cumbria keeps its dogs in foster homes across the county rather than at a centre, and sees adopters by pre-arranged appointment only. We don't list Dogs Trust dogs, so search its own site.

The RSPCA Westmorland Branch in Kendal rehomes cats and kittens, and says it is unable to help with dogs at the moment.

The law in England

  • Microchipping and change of keeper. In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
  • Lucy's Law: buying a puppy. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
  • Banned dog types. In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
  • XL Bully dogs. In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

Kendal dog adoption FAQ

Where can I adopt a rescue dog in Kendal?

Animal Rescue Cumbria has its shelter at Grayrigg, just outside Kendal. Animal Care Lancaster Morecambe & District at Lancaster, about 20 miles south, Wolfwood at Ellel, about 23 miles, and Eden Animal Rescue near Penrith, about 23 miles north, list dogs with us too, and you apply to the rescue.

How much does it cost to adopt a dog in Kendal?

Animal Rescue Cumbria asks £300 for a dog and £350 for a puppy, not refundable. Animal Care Lancaster asks a minimum donation of £150, and Eden Animal Rescue a minimum of £250 unless the dog's profile says otherwise. Wolfwood publishes no fee.

Can I visit Animal Rescue Cumbria to see the dogs?

Not without an invitation. You send an enquiry about a particular dog, and if it looks a good match the shelter invites you to meet and walk the dog. It never lets a dog go home on the first appointment, and its phone lines are open from 12 noon to 3pm.

What happens to stray dogs found in Kendal?

Westmorland and Furness Council picks them up and returns them to their owners or takes them to its contracted kennels. A dog unclaimed after seven days becomes the council's property and is rehomed where possible. Report a stray to the council, not to a rescue.

Is there a greyhound rescue near Kendal?

Yes. Retired Greyhounds South Lakes at Witherslack, about 8 miles away, rehomes ex-racing greyhounds that live in its own home rather than kennels, for a minimum donation of £250. Fill in its enquiry form and phone for an appointment.

Is there a Dogs Trust in Kendal?

No. Dogs Trust Cumbria has no centre to visit: its dogs live in foster homes across the county and it sees adopters by appointment only. We don't list Dogs Trust dogs, so search its own site.

How do I rehome my dog in Kendal?

Animal Rescue Cumbria has an intake form for owners, though it can't accept every dog, and Animal Care Lancaster keeps a waiting list. Our Kendal rehoming page has the details.

LocalPetFinder and other pet sites

Tap a question to expand

Is LocalPetFinder the same as Petfinder?

No. LocalPetFinder is an independent UK website and is not connected with Petfinder. We bring together dogs, cats and rabbits from UK rescues and rehoming centres, and every profile links to the rescue that cares for the animal, so you apply with them directly.

How is LocalPetFinder different from Pets4Homes?

Pets4Homes describes itself as the UK’s largest online pet marketplace, connecting buyers with breeders as well as shelters and charities. LocalPetFinder is for adoption: our listings come from rescues and rehoming centres and from owners rehoming their own pet, each checked by a reviewer before it goes live. We do not take adverts from breeders.

Can I find RSPCA animals on LocalPetFinder?

No. We do not list the RSPCA’s animals, at its national centres or its branches. To see them, use RSPCA Find a Pet, the RSPCA’s own search for animals in its centres and branches across England and Wales.
