Rescue puppies near Kendal: where to look and what they cost

Plenty of people in Cumbria look for a rescue puppy, and very few rescue puppies are listed at any one time. Here is what the rescues near Kendal charge for a puppy, why so few come up, how to be ready when one does, and how to spot the puppy adverts that are not what they seem.

By the LocalPetFinder Team · Checked 2 November 2026

The short answer

Rescue puppies near Kendal are rare: when we checked on 2 November 2026, the one young litter listed with us within about 25 miles, at Animal Rescue Cumbria, was already reserved, and the youngest dogs otherwise were 8 and 9 months old. When it has one, Animal Rescue Cumbria asks £350 for a puppy. Set up an alert on our Kendal puppies page and get your details to the rescues before a litter comes in.

Rescue adoption fees
Rescue fees for puppies are set by each rescue. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross puppies under six months start from £525. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
Rescues near Kendal
Animal Rescue Cumbria: £350 for a puppy, £300 for an adult dog, not refundable. Eden Animal Rescue: a minimum of £250 for a dog unless its profile says otherwise. Animal Care Lancaster: a minimum of £150 for a dog; neither publishes a separate puppy figure.
Buying a puppy
Blue Cross puts the cost of buying a puppy at £400 to £3,000, before food, insurance and vet bills.
A dog for life
PDSA puts the minimum lifetime cost of a dog at £6,200 to £18,800, depending on the breed (2024 figures, not counting buying the dog).

Where to find rescue puppies near Kendal

The count at the top of our Kendal puppies page is live: every puppy listed with us within about 25 miles of Kendal, which takes in Barrow-in-Furness and the Lancaster area. Three of the rescues we list rehome puppies as well as adult dogs.

Animal Rescue Cumbria, Grayrigg

Just outside Kendal, and the only rescue we list in the town's own area. Its fees are £350 for a puppy and £300 for an adult dog, not refundable. A puppy too young to be neutered goes home under a signed agreement that you will have it neutered later, with its vaccinations started and a microchip in place. You enquire about a particular dog on its site, and it contacts you if your home looks a good match. Its dogs, including any puppies, are on our Animal Rescue Cumbria page.

It never lets a dog go home on the first appointment, so expect at least two visits. Its phone lines are open from 12 noon to 3pm, which is the time to ask whether a litter is expected.

Eden Animal Rescue, near Penrith

About 23 miles north. Eden Animal Rescue has no separate puppy fee: dogs are a minimum donation of £250 unless the profile says otherwise, and every animal goes home neutered unless it is too young or has a medical reason to wait, vaccinated and microchipped. It rehomes only within Cumbria, and it matches animals to homes from the questionnaire and photos you send, so a questionnaire on file helps when a young dog comes in. Its dogs are on our Eden page.

Animal Care Lancaster Morecambe & District

About 20 miles south in Lancashire. Animal Care Lancaster asks a minimum donation of £150 for a dog and publishes no separate puppy figure. You apply for a particular dog on its form; if you haven't heard within 7 days, the application hasn't succeeded. After a home check it asks for 3 visits within 5 to 7 days and a week's trial. Its dogs are on our Animal Care Lancaster page.

Further afield

Dogs Trust Cumbria keeps its dogs in foster homes across the county and sees adopters by pre-arranged appointment only; Dogs Trust's fee is the same for a puppy as for an adult dog (see the cost box above). Greyhound and lurcher rescues rarely have puppies: Retired Greyhounds South Lakes at Witherslack says the greyhounds coming into its care are usually 2 to 4 years old. Our guide to dog rescues in Kendal and Cumbria covers every rescue in detail.

Why so few rescue puppies are listed

Most dogs come into rescue as adults. Wolfwood at Ellel says many of its dogs have been abandoned to the stray system, and the dogs listed with us around Kendal on 2 November 2026 were mostly adults: lurchers, collies, Staffy crosses and terriers. A puppy that does come in tends to be reserved quickly, as Animal Rescue Cumbria's litter was.

So the realistic choice for most Kendal and Barrow homes is between waiting, with your details in, for a puppy, and adopting a young adult now. A dog of 8 months to 2 years often still has plenty of puppyish energy, but its size and character are clearer, and it may already be neutered, vaccinated and microchipped by the rescue.

How to be first in line for a rescue puppy

Because so few puppies are listed at once, these steps put you in the best position when one is:

  1. Set up an alert on our Kendal puppies page, so you hear when a puppy is listed with any of the rescues.
  2. Phone the team at Animal Rescue Cumbria between 12 noon and 3pm and ask whether it expects any puppies, and send an enquiry as soon as one appears on its site.
  3. Fill in Eden Animal Rescue's questionnaire, with photos of your home, garden and fences, so it can match you if a young dog comes in.
  4. If you rent, get your landlord's written permission now: Animal Rescue Cumbria and Eden both need it before they can go further.
  5. Budget for the fee and the first year: the puppy fee, insurance, food, training classes and vet care, including neutering if the puppy is too young when it leaves.

Puppy, young dog or adult?

A puppy needs someone at home for much of the day, house training, early socialisation and patience through chewing and adolescence. A young adult may already have some of that done. Animal Rescue Cumbria's adoption guide asks you to meet the dog with your family and any dog you already have before you decide, which is easier to judge with a dog whose character has settled.

If you have young children, an adult whose behaviour with children the rescue already knows can be the safer choice. Each profile at Animal Rescue Cumbria and Eden says what the dog can live with.

If you searched "puppies for sale" in Cumbria or Barrow

A rescue puppy is adopted, not bought. You apply, the rescue matches a puppy to your home, and you pay its fee, which helps cover the vet work already done. Every puppy on our Kendal puppies page is adopted through its rescue, never sold by us.

If you decide to buy, England's Lucy's Law has applied since 6 April 2020: puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer, so you buy directly from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre. Blue Cross says to see a puppy with its mother and littermates, and warns about adverts with little information, excuses about why you can't meet the mother, and offers to hand a puppy over in a public place or deliver it to your door. The Royal Kennel Club runs a "Find a puppy" service.

The law in England

Microchipping and change of keeper

In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.

Lucy's Law: buying a puppy

In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Banned dog types

In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.

XL Bully dogs

In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

Should I adopt a puppy or a young adult dog?

For many homes, a young adult. Its size and character are clearer, it may already be neutered and vaccinated, and the rescues near Kendal had dogs of 8 and 9 months listed on 2 November 2026 when their one litter was reserved. A puppy suits a home where someone is around most of the day.
