The law in England

  • Microchipping and change of keeper. In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
  • Lucy's Law: buying a puppy. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
  • Banned dog types. In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
  • XL Bully dogs. In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

Can rescues rehome puppies under six months?

Yes. Lucy's Law stops third-party sales, not rescues. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Are rescue puppies vaccinated and microchipped when I adopt them?

They should be microchipped. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a puppy can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped. At the large charities the fee also pays for first vaccinations. Dogs Trust's fee includes a health check, vaccinations, worming and other treatments, neutering (or a neutering voucher), microchipping, a collar and lead, food and four weeks' free Petplan insurance. A young puppy may still have vaccinations to finish, so ask the rescue which it has had and what is still due.

How old are the puppies in Brighton and Hove?

As of 8 November 2026, the 6 puppies listed in and around Brighton and Hove are: 6 aged six to 12 months, by the rescues' listed ages. We count a dog as a puppy up to 12 months. Each puppy's rescue can tell you what it has learned so far.

Are the puppies in Brighton and Hove good with children and other pets?

It depends on the dog, not its size or age. As of 8 November 2026, the rescues mark 5 of the 6 puppies listed in and around Brighton and Hove as able to live with children, 1 with cats and 3 with other dogs. Where a profile says nothing, ask the rescue, and supervise early meetings with children whatever the dog.

Why are there so few rescue puppies in Brighton and Hove?

Puppies are a small share of what rescues list: as of 8 November 2026, 6 of the 26 dogs listed in Brighton and Hove are puppies. Young adult dogs are worth a look too, and their rescues can tell you more about their character.

Where can I buy a puppy in Brighton and Hove, and should I?

Not here: we only list dogs with rescues, so every puppy listed here is adopted for the rescue's fee, which usually covers vet work already done. Whether to buy is your choice. Adopting means the rescue can tell you what it knows about the puppy's history and health before you apply. If you decide to buy, The Royal Kennel Club runs a Find a Puppy service, and Dogs Trust's breed guides suggest talking to your vet first: they say some practices offer pre-purchase consultations on likely health conditions and rough costs.

Can I get a free puppy to a good home in Brighton and Hove, or one under £500?

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Of the 6 puppies listed in and around Brighton and Hove today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; the nearest rescue is Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare at Ringmer, about 10 miles away. Puppy fees can be higher: Blue Cross puppies start from £525, while Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog.
