Young dogs near Oxford on 7 November
Stokenchurch Dog Rescue had the one litter we found: German Spitz types, roughly three months old, five in all and all reserved. No dog at the Oxfordshire Animal Sanctuary was under 2, and BARKS near Banbury has put puppy adoption on hold.
Where a puppy might still turn up
From the Reading side, Pro Dogs Direct had two young puppies fostered at Aldershot, one of them waiting for surgery before she can be rehomed. Stokenchurch gives a neutering voucher for a dog under 10 months and rehomes only within 50 miles, so a pup from there stays fairly local.
Searched "puppies for sale" in Oxford?
A rescue pup comes through an application and a home visit, not a sale. Blue Cross reckons a bought puppy costs between £400 and £3,000. Insist on meeting the litter with its mother, and pass any request for money in advance to Report Fraud.
The law in England
- Microchipping and change of keeper. In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
- Lucy's Law: buying a puppy. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
- Banned dog types. In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
- XL Bully dogs. In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

How many puppies are available for adoption in Oxford?
As of 8 November 2026, no puppies are listed for adoption in and around Oxford on LocalPetFinder. Rescues add animals all the time, so this page fills as they list them.
Can rescues rehome puppies under six months?
Yes. Lucy's Law stops third-party sales, not rescues. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
Are rescue puppies vaccinated and microchipped when I adopt them?
They should be microchipped. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a puppy can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped. At the large charities the fee also pays for first vaccinations. Dogs Trust's fee includes a health check, vaccinations, worming and other treatments, neutering (or a neutering voucher), microchipping, a collar and lead, food and four weeks' free Petplan insurance. A young puppy may still have vaccinations to finish, so ask the rescue which it has had and what is still due.
Why are there so few rescue puppies in Oxford?
As of 8 November 2026, none of the 29 dogs listed in Oxford is a puppy. Young adult dogs are worth a look too, or check back.
How much does it cost to adopt a rescue puppy in Oxford?
Rescue fees for puppies are set by each rescue. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross puppies under six months start from £525. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
Are there puppies for sale in Oxford?
No. We don't list animals for sale. Every puppy on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. Rescues rehome animals rather than selling them, usually for an adoption fee: for example, Dogs Trust £300, and Blue Cross puppies under six months start from £525. The fee usually goes towards vet work already done, such as neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
Where can I buy a puppy in Oxford, and should I?
Not here: we only list dogs with rescues, so every puppy listed here is adopted for the rescue's fee, which usually covers vet work already done. Whether to buy is your choice. Adopting means the rescue can tell you what it knows about the puppy's history and health before you apply. If you decide to buy, The Royal Kennel Club runs a Find a Puppy service, and Dogs Trust's breed guides suggest talking to your vet first: they say some practices offer pre-purchase consultations on likely health conditions and rough costs.
Can I get a free puppy to a good home in Oxford, or one under £500?
Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Puppy fees can be higher: Blue Cross puppies start from £525, while Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.
