Puppies at the rescues near Belfast

Three rescues had puppies on 6 November 2026. The Barn Animal Rescue at Carrowdore had a litter of eight Saluki crosses at 8 weeks old, Paws and People in Banbridge had three pups of 10 to 12 weeks, and Almost Home Animal Rescue NI at Moira had Kyle, a Jack Russell posted at 12 weeks, among its younger dogs.

A licence before the puppy comes home

In Northern Ireland you must hold a dog licence before you take possession of any dog, a rescue puppy included, and the puppy must be chipped by eight weeks old. Assisi, which had no puppy that day, can't rehome on the same day, so there is time to apply.

Puppy fees near Belfast

On PAW the Barn's Salukis were £300 and the Paws and People pups £200; Assisi charges £200 for a puppy. Came here from "puppies for sale Belfast"? Northern Ireland's Lucy's Law is approved but not in force yet (DAERA), so meet the mother before you pay anyone.

Rescue fees for puppies are set by each rescue, and Dogs Trust charges £287.50 for a puppy or adult dog in Northern Ireland (where you also need a dog licence). The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

The law in Northern Ireland

  • A dog licence before you take your dog home. In Northern Ireland every dog needs a licence from the local council, and it's an offence to take possession of a dog, paid for or not, before getting a licence for it (nidirect). A licence costs £12.50 and lasts 12 months, with a £5 rate for some owners, and the dog must be microchipped before you apply. Get it before you collect your dog: the person who gives you a dog without one commits an offence too.
  • Microchipping. In Northern Ireland every dog must be microchipped at eight weeks old, and since 9 April 2012 the chip has been a condition of the dog licence. If the details on the database aren't accurate, nidirect says "the dog is not considered as microchipped and the dog licence will not be valid" (nidirect). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
  • Lucy's Law: buying a puppy. Northern Ireland does not yet have Lucy's Law, so third-party sales of puppies are not banned there yet. DAERA announced on 7 October 2026 that Northern Ireland's own version has been approved and that it intends to bring the regulations forward by the end of 2026, with a lead-in period before they apply (DAERA).
  • Banned dog types. In Northern Ireland the same five types are banned, and it is "an offence to breed, sell, offer for sale or make a gift of a dog of a banned type" (nidirect). No rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
  • XL Bully dogs. In Northern Ireland "it is illegal to rehome, sell or transfer ownership of XL Bully type dogs", and an exemption certificate doesn't change that; owning one without an exemption certificate has been an offence since 1 January 2025 (nidirect).

How many puppies are available for adoption in Belfast?

As of 8 November 2026, 15 puppies are listed for adoption in and around Belfast on LocalPetFinder, from Almost Home Animal Rescue NI, The Barn Animal Rescue and Paws and People. All are with rescues within about 25 miles of Belfast, each shown with its town and distance. Each profile links to the rescue, and you apply to adopt with them directly.

Which rescues near Belfast have puppies right now, and how old are they?

As of 8 November 2026, Almost Home Animal Rescue NI (at Moira, about 14 miles away): 7, The Barn Animal Rescue (at Carrowdore, about 9 miles away): 5 and Paws and People (at Banbridge, about 22 miles away): 3. The newest was added on 6 November 2026. Each profile links to the rescue, which handles the adoption.

Are rescue puppies vaccinated and microchipped when I adopt them?

They should be microchipped. In Northern Ireland all dogs must be microchipped at eight weeks old (see nidirect). At the large charities the fee also pays for first vaccinations. Dogs Trust's fee includes a health check, vaccinations, worming and other treatments, neutering (or a neutering voucher), microchipping, a collar and lead, food and four weeks' free Petplan insurance. In Northern Ireland you also need a dog licence. A young puppy may still have vaccinations to finish, so ask the rescue which it has had and what is still due.

How old are the puppies in Belfast?

As of 8 November 2026, the 15 puppies listed in and around Belfast are: 9 under six months, 4 aged six to 12 months and 2 with no exact age given, by the rescues' listed ages. We count a dog as a puppy up to 12 months. Some rescues charge a higher fee for a puppy under six months, so check the fee on each profile. Each puppy's rescue can tell you what it has learned so far.

Are the puppies in Belfast good with children and other pets?

It depends on the dog, not its size or age. As of 8 November 2026, the rescues mark 13 of the 15 puppies listed in and around Belfast as able to live with children, 7 with cats and 11 with other dogs. Where a profile says nothing, ask the rescue, and supervise early meetings with children whatever the dog.

Why are there so few rescue puppies in Belfast?

Puppies are a small share of what rescues list: as of 8 November 2026, 15 of the 90 dogs listed in Belfast are puppies. Young adult dogs are worth a look too, and their rescues can tell you more about their character.

How much does it cost to adopt a rescue puppy in Belfast?

The puppies listed in and around Belfast today are with Almost Home Animal Rescue NI at Moira, about 14 miles away (7), The Barn Animal Rescue at Carrowdore, about 9 miles away (5) and Paws and People at Banbridge, about 22 miles away (3); each profile shows that rescue's fee. Rescue fees for puppies are set by each rescue, and Dogs Trust charges £287.50 for a puppy or adult dog in Northern Ireland (where you also need a dog licence). The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

Are there puppies for sale in Belfast?

No. We don't list animals for sale. Every puppy on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. The 15 puppies listed in and around Belfast today are with Almost Home Animal Rescue NI at Moira, about 14 miles away (7), The Barn Animal Rescue at Carrowdore, about 9 miles away (5) and Paws and People at Banbridge, about 22 miles away (3), and each rescue shows its own fee on the profile. For comparison, Dogs Trust £287.50 in Northern Ireland.

Where can I buy a puppy in Belfast, and should I?

Not here: we only list dogs with rescues, so every puppy listed here is adopted for the rescue's fee, which usually covers vet work already done. Whether to buy is your choice. Adopting means the rescue can tell you what it knows about the puppy's history and health before you apply. If you decide to buy, The Royal Kennel Club runs a Find a Puppy service, and Dogs Trust's breed guides suggest talking to your vet first: they say some practices offer pre-purchase consultations on likely health conditions and rough costs.

Can I get a free puppy to a good home in Belfast, or one under £500?

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Of the 15 puppies listed in and around Belfast today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; the nearest rescue is The Barn Animal Rescue at Carrowdore, about 9 miles away. Dogs Trust charges £287.50 for a puppy or adult dog. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. In Northern Ireland all dogs must be microchipped at eight weeks old, so ask to see the microchip details (see nidirect).
