Rescue puppies in Belfast and Northern Ireland
Searching for puppies for sale in Belfast or anywhere in Northern Ireland? Rescue is worth a look first: on the day we checked, three rescues near Belfast showed puppies on their own pages. Below: where they were, the fees, then buying, where Northern Ireland's rules are not the same as the rest of the UK: there is no Lucy's Law here yet, and the licence comes before the puppy.

The short answer
Yes, there are rescue puppies near Belfast. On 6 November 2026 Almost Home Animal Rescue NI at Moira had young pups including a Jack Russell posted at 12 weeks old, The Barn Animal Rescue had a litter of eight Saluki crosses at 8 weeks old, £300 each, and Paws and People in Banbridge had three puppies at £200. Whichever route you take in Northern Ireland, get your dog licence before you collect the puppy.
- Rescue adoption fees
- Rescue fees for puppies are set by each rescue, and Dogs Trust charges £287.50 for a puppy or adult dog in Northern Ireland (where you also need a dog licence). The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
- Rescue puppies near Belfast
- Assisi Animal Sanctuary: £200. On PAW on 6 November 2026: The Barn £300 for its Saluki crosses and £250 for a 5-month-old Beagle; Paws and People £200. Almost Home publishes no fee.
- Dog licence
- £12.50 a year from Belfast City Council, or £5 at the concession rate (for example, a neutered dog).
- The years ahead
- PDSA's 2024 estimate for a dog's lifetime is £6,200 to £18,800; nidirect reminds buyers that a puppy could live for about 13 years or longer.
Where the rescue puppies were near Belfast
Our Belfast puppies page carries every young dog we list within 25 miles of Belfast. On 6 November 2026 the rescues' own pages showed these:
Almost Home Animal Rescue NI, Moira
Almost Home's dog page had Kyle, a Jack Russell described at 12 weeks old when he was posted in late October, Erica at 17 to 18 weeks (under consideration) and Brody at 14 weeks (reserved). Its application form asks about the children in your home, your working hours and where the puppy will sleep. It publishes no fee.
The Barn Animal Rescue, Carrowdore
The Barn had a litter of eight Saluki cross puppies, the boys and the girls listed separately, at 8 weeks old and £300 each on PAW, plus Maisie, a 5-month-old Beagle, at £250. Its PAW profile says each animal leaves chipped, vaccinated and wormed, with a neutering voucher and 5 weeks of free insurance.
Paws and People, Banbridge
Paws and People, a small home-run rescue about 22 miles from Belfast, had Bear at 10 weeks and Carson and Dakota, both Labrador crosses at 12 weeks, at £200 each on its PAW listings.
Assisi Animal Sanctuary, Conlig
Assisi had no puppy on its adopt page that day, but sets a puppy fee of £200 and contributes towards neutering when a young dog leaves before it has been done. Check back, or watch our puppies page.
Adopting a rescue puppy: what to expect
A rescue wants to know a puppy will be looked after for its whole life, so expect questions:
- An application, then a visit. Assisi calls you after your form and may want more than one visit; it never rehomes on the same day.
- Time at home. Almost Home's form asks your working hours and where the puppy will spend the day.
- A licence ready. In Northern Ireland a puppy you adopt needs your own dog licence before you take it home, and the puppy must already be chipped: nidirect says all dogs must be microchipped at eight weeks old.
Is a young adult a better fit?
A dog of one or two has its adult size and its character is already known. When we checked, Almost Home and The Barn both had dogs of about a year old, and our guide to dog rescues around Belfast compares all of them.
Searching "puppies for sale Northern Ireland"?
A rescue doesn't sell a puppy: it matches one to your home after you apply, and the fee goes towards vaccinations, the chip and neutering. Nor do we sell anything; every puppy on our puppies page is adopted through the rescue that cares for it. nidirect's advice on getting a dog puts re-homing an unwanted puppy alongside buying from a responsible breeder or privately.
If you do buy, know that Northern Ireland does not yet have Lucy's Law, so a dealer or other third-party seller can still sell puppies here. DAERA said on 7 October 2026 that its own version has been approved and that it plans to bring the regulations forward by the end of 2026, with a lead-in period before they apply. Under the proposals, buyers will generally have to see the puppy with its mother where it was bred. Do that anyway.
The licence rule applies to a bought puppy too. In Northern Ireland, taking possession of a dog before you hold its licence is an offence whether or not money changed hands, and the seller who hands it over breaks the law too. A licence needs the puppy's chip number, so a genuine seller will give it to you before you collect.
The law in Northern Ireland
A dog licence before you take your dog home
In Northern Ireland every dog needs a licence from the local council, and it's an offence to take possession of a dog, paid for or not, before getting a licence for it (nidirect). A licence costs £12.50 and lasts 12 months, with a £5 rate for some owners, and the dog must be microchipped before you apply. Get it before you collect your dog: the person who gives you a dog without one commits an offence too.
Microchipping
In Northern Ireland every dog must be microchipped at eight weeks old, and since 9 April 2012 the chip has been a condition of the dog licence. If the details on the database aren't accurate, nidirect says "the dog is not considered as microchipped and the dog licence will not be valid" (nidirect). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
Lucy's Law: buying a puppy
Northern Ireland does not yet have Lucy's Law, so third-party sales of puppies are not banned there yet. DAERA announced on 7 October 2026 that Northern Ireland's own version has been approved and that it intends to bring the regulations forward by the end of 2026, with a lead-in period before they apply (DAERA).
Banned dog types
In Northern Ireland the same five types are banned, and it is "an offence to breed, sell, offer for sale or make a gift of a dog of a banned type" (nidirect). No rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
XL Bully dogs
In Northern Ireland "it is illegal to rehome, sell or transfer ownership of XL Bully type dogs", and an exemption certificate doesn't change that; owning one without an exemption certificate has been an offence since 1 January 2025 (nidirect).
Questions
Tap a question to expand
Are there rescue puppies in Northern Ireland?
Yes. On 6 November 2026 Almost Home Animal Rescue NI at Moira, The Barn Animal Rescue at Carrowdore and Paws and People in Banbridge all had puppies on their own pages. Puppies from the rescues we list show on our Belfast puppies page.
How much is a rescue puppy in Belfast?
Assisi Animal Sanctuary charges £200 for a puppy. On 6 November 2026 The Barn asked £300 for its Saluki cross puppies on PAW and Paws and People £200. Add £12.50 for the dog licence.
Is Lucy's Law in force in Northern Ireland?
Not yet. DAERA announced on 7 October 2026 that Northern Ireland's own version has been approved and that it intends to bring the regulations forward by the end of 2026, with a lead-in period before they apply. Until then, third-party sales of puppies are not banned in Northern Ireland.
Do I need a dog licence for a new puppy in Northern Ireland?
Yes, before you take it home. In Northern Ireland, taking possession of a dog before you hold its licence is an offence, and so is handing one over to someone without one. Belfast City Council charges £12.50, or £5 at the concession rate.
At what age must a puppy be microchipped in Northern Ireland?
By eight weeks old. nidirect says every dog in Northern Ireland must be chipped at eight weeks old, and you need the chip number to license the puppy.
Are there free puppies in Belfast?
Not from a rescue, whose fee goes towards vaccinations, the chip and neutering. Be wary of any "free puppy" advert, and in Northern Ireland the person giving you a puppy commits an offence if you don't have a licence for it.
Where do I report a puppy scam in Northern Ireland?
To Report Fraud, online or on 0300 123 2040. If the scam is happening now, or the seller lives in Northern Ireland and you know who they are, call the PSNI on 101.
Can I take a rescue puppy home the same day in Belfast?
No. Assisi says it can't rehome on the same day, and every rescue near Belfast starts with an application. You also need your dog licence before you collect.
