Rescue puppies in Kent: where to adopt near Canterbury

"Puppies for sale Kent" is typed into Google thousands of times a month. Around Canterbury, rescue is a real alternative: on the day we checked, a Thanet charity had a whole run of dogs under a year old in foster homes. This guide shows where young rescue dogs were, what they cost, the rules that come with a puppy, and how to buy without being scammed if you go that way.

Angels 4 Dogs Rescue, Thanet fosters

On 5 November 2026 most dogs under a year listed with us within 25 miles were with Angels 4 Dogs: crossbreeds of 5 to 7 months, some of them recently arrived from Romania and living with fosterers. It homes only in Kent, replies to forms within 7 working days, and visits your home before a pup moves in. Each puppy's page sets its own fencing and children rules.

Last Chance Animal Rescue, New Romney

Last Chance's dog page had a 5-week-old Cockapoo type at New Romney on 5 November 2026, too young yet to leave. Its New Romney dogs join our Last Chance page as this guide goes live.

Young greyhounds

Kent Greyhound Rescue sometimes takes young greyhounds judged not good enough to race; its youngest listed with us that day were 18 months. It may relax its no-children-under-8 rule for a young puppy.

What rescues ask of a puppy home

A puppy from rescue comes with conditions. These are the ones rescues near Canterbury set:

  • Not alone for long. Last Chance won't place a puppy where it would be left more than 2 hours at a time.
  • Classes. Last Chance wants written proof you have booked a puppy socialisation class, and Kent Greyhound Rescue makes classes part of a puppy adoption.
  • Neutering later. A puppy too young to neuter goes home on a contract: Angels 4 Dogs requires it done at the right age and pays £80 towards it.
  • Secure fencing. One 6-month-old at Angels 4 Dogs needed 6ft fencing with no gaps; check each dog's page.

A puppy from abroad needs time

Some young dogs at Angels 4 Dogs come from Romanian shelters. Its guide for adopters asks you not to walk a new arrival for its first two weeks, to use a double lead and keep it on lead for 3 to 6 months, and to expect a nervous dog at first. Every dog it brings over is screened for brucellosis.

If a young adult would do, our Canterbury dog rescues guide covers the wider choice.

Searching "puppies for sale" in Kent or Ashford?

Rescue puppies are never sold. You apply, the rescue matches you, and the fee pays towards jabs, chipping and neutering. Nothing on our puppies page is for sale.

If you buy, Lucy's Law means in England only the breeder or a rehoming centre may sell or rehome a puppy younger than six months; pet shops and dealers can't. Meet the puppy with its mother, as Blue Cross advises; The Royal Kennel Club's Find a puppy lists breeders. Never pay a deposit before you have seen the puppy, and pass such adverts to Report Fraud.

The law in England

Microchipping and change of keeper

In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.

Lucy's Law: buying a puppy

In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Banned dog types

In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.

XL Bully dogs

In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).
