The short answer
Rescue puppies near Worcester are scarce, and the best routes are to register with Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter at Newland, which doesn't advertise the few puppies it gets and charges £400 for one under 6 months, and to watch Cheltenham Animal Shelter, where a dog or puppy is £300. Check our Worcester puppies page for the live list, and be ready to consider a young adult.
- Rescue adoption fees
- Rescue fees for puppies are set by each rescue. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross puppies under six months start from £525. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
- Rescues around Worcester
- Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter asks £400 for a puppy under 6 months and £300 for an older dog. Cheltenham Animal Shelter asks £300 for a dog or puppy. Happy Staffie Rescue asks £350 to £500 for a puppy under 6 months, plus a £300 neutering bond you get back once the dog is neutered.
- Buying a puppy
- £400 to £3,000 for the puppy alone, according to Blue Cross; food, insurance and the vet are extra.
- Owning a dog
- Over its life a dog costs at least £6,200 to £18,800 by PDSA's 2024 figures, the spread set by breed, and that leaves out the purchase price.
Where to find rescue puppies near Worcester
Under the short answer you'll find a live tally of dogs younger than a year on our site, in Worcester itself and as far as roughly 24 miles away. When we checked on 3 November 2026, none of the dogs already listed near the city was under a year old; the youngest were between 12 and 18 months, at Forest Dog Rescue. A puppy here is the exception, not the rule.
Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter, Newland
Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter, about 5 miles out towards Malvern, says it very rarely gets young puppies of 6 months or under, and that when one does come in it isn't advertised, because the shelter would be inundated. Instead, register with it and it will be in touch if a puppy comes in. A puppy under 6 months costs £400, vaccinated, neutered and microchipped, with 4 weeks' Petplan cover. Its other dogs are on our Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter page.
Cheltenham Animal Shelter
Cheltenham Animal Shelter, about 21 miles south, lists its dogs on its own site, and on 3 November 2026 the youngest marked available were born in April 2026 and October 2025. Its fee is £300 for a dog or puppy; if a puppy is too young to be neutered or fully vaccinated when it leaves, the shelter books it in at its own vet, CASVet, with a voucher to cover the cost. Its dogs are on our Cheltenham Animal Shelter page.
Happy Staffie Rescue, Kidderminster
Happy Staffie Rescue takes in young Staffies and bull breeds as well as adults: one arrived at 7 months in September 2026, with a contribution of £275. A puppy under 6 months costs £350 to £500, and an unneutered one of 6 to 12 months £275 to £350, each plus a £300 neutering bond. Its dogs are on our Happy Staffie Rescue page.
Home rules at Worcestershire rescues
Read these before you set your heart on a young dog, because around Worcester they decide most applications:
- Children. Happy Staffie Rescue won't rehome to a household with children under 5, and Wythall Animal Sanctuary not with children under 3. Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter rehomes to families only when an animal suits it and its history is known.
- Time alone. Happy Staffie Rescue and Wythall both say no more than four hours, and a young puppy needs someone at home far more than that.
- An older dog at home. Wythall won't home a puppy or young dog with an elderly dog.
- Moves, new jobs and babies. Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter asks you to think again if you are moving house or changing your working hours in the next 3 to 6 months, or expecting a baby in the coming year.
- Renting. Happy Staffie Rescue and Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter both want your landlord's written permission before the dog goes home.
Why so few rescue puppies are listed
Most dogs reach the rescues around Worcester as strays, owner hand-ins and, at Home Run Hounds, retired racing greyhounds, and those are mostly adults. Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter says that demand for animals often outweighs supply, and very rarely gets puppies.
So a dog just out of puppyhood deserves a second glance. One of a year or two is usually past the hardest months of house training and chewing, its character is clearer, and at Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter it costs £300 against £400 for a puppy. Forest Dog Rescue asks adopters to weigh it up honestly: puppies need house training, socialising and care with their exercise, while an older dog may be the perfect companion.
Getting ready before a Worcester puppy appears
Rescue puppies near Worcester go quickly, so do the slow parts first:
- Register where you can. Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter keeps interested people on file for puppies; Cheltenham Animal Shelter keeps an application for 3 months, so one form covers the next dog you like.
- Have your photos and permission ready. Happy Staffie Rescue asks for photos of your garden fencing with the application, and written permission if you rent.
- Be free for several visits. Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter expects at least three meets within 14 days, and Birch Hill Dog Rescue says some dogs need a few visits.
- Sort insurance early. The free cover rescues near Worcester hand over runs out after 4 or 5 weeks, so compare policies now and the switch will be seamless.
- Watch one page, not eight. Our Worcester puppies page gathers every young dog listed with us near the city, and you can set an alert there.
Searching "puppies for sale Worcester"?
Rescues don't sell puppies; they rehome them. After your application, the rescue pairs a puppy with your household and you pay a fee towards the vet care it has already had. We sell nothing: each puppy on our Worcester puppies page goes home through its own rescue.
Buying is governed in England by Lucy's Law, in force since 6 April 2020. Under it, no third party such as a dealer or pet shop may sell a puppy younger than six months: you deal with the breeder in person, or go to a rehoming centre. Ask to see the puppy with its mother and littermates, says Blue Cross, and be wary of thin adverts, stories about why the mother can't be seen, and sellers who want to meet in a public place. For breeders, there are the "Find a puppy" listings of The Royal Kennel Club.
The law in England
Microchipping and change of keeper
In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
Lucy's Law: buying a puppy
In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
Banned dog types
In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
XL Bully dogs
In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).
Questions
Tap a question to expand
Where can I find rescue puppies near Worcester?
They are rare. Register with Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter at Newland, which doesn't advertise the few puppies it gets, and watch Cheltenham Animal Shelter and Happy Staffie Rescue in Kidderminster. Our Worcester puppies page lists every one live.
How much is a rescue puppy near Worcester?
Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter asks £400 for a puppy under 6 months, and Cheltenham Animal Shelter £300 for a dog or puppy. Happy Staffie Rescue asks £350 to £500 plus a £300 neutering bond. Buying one costs £400 to £3,000, by Blue Cross figures.
Can I get a free puppy in Worcester?
No rescue gives puppies away. Each one near Worcester charges a fee, which goes towards the microchip, vaccinations and neutering. An advert offering a "free" puppy means none of that has been done, and it could be a scam: see the puppy at home with its mother and look up its microchip.
Why doesn't Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter advertise its puppies?
It says it very rarely gets puppies of 6 months or under, and would be inundated with requests if it advertised them. Register with it instead, and it will contact you if a suitable puppy comes in.
Do Worcester rescues keep a puppy waiting list?
Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter keeps a register for puppies, which is the closest thing to one. Cheltenham Animal Shelter keeps your application for 3 months. Happy Staffie Rescue keeps no lists: apply for a dog that is available.
Do rescue puppies come neutered and vaccinated?
Most are microchipped and vaccinated, with neutering done when they are old enough. Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter's animals leave vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. Cheltenham Animal Shelter books a too-young puppy in at its own vet with a voucher, and Happy Staffie Rescue takes a £300 bond you get back after neutering.
Would a young adult suit me better than a puppy?
Often, yes. Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter charges £300 for a dog of 6 months or more and £400 for a puppy younger than that. A young adult has usually left the worst of the chewing and house training behind, and its rescue knows how it gets on with children and other dogs.
