How each rescue near Worcester works
The rescues work quite differently: some want several meetings over a fortnight, others move within days. Read the section for the dog you like before you apply.
Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter, Newland
Formed in 1983, Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter sits on Hawthorn Lane at Newland, between Worcester and Malvern, with kennels for up to 26 dogs. It is a non-view shelter, so you can't walk round the kennels: you read a dog's profile online, send in an interested parties form, and a member of the team gets in touch within 3 working days (its adoption process). If you hear nothing within 2 weeks, it asks you to take that as a no this time.
Expect at least three meets, at the shelter or your home, finished within 14 days of the first. Bring your own dog to one of them, and a home check follows the second. Every dog is vaccinated, neutered and microchipped, and goes home with a Pet Remedy kit and 4 weeks' Petplan cover. It is open to the public from 11am to 3pm, Thursday to Tuesday, and closed on Wednesdays. Its dogs are on our Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter page.
Happy Staffie Rescue, Kidderminster
Founded in 2009, Happy Staffie Rescue is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier rescue with a small rehoming centre in Kidderminster, about 14 miles north, and takes in Staffies from all over the UK. It keeps no waiting lists: apply on the page of a dog that is available, only when you are ready to adopt now, and it replies only if it can arrange a viewing.
Its rehoming policy is strict and clear: adopters must be 18 or over, it won't rehome to a home with children under 5, and a dog must not be left for more than four hours. Bring your fence photos with the form, your landlord's written permission if you rent, and every dog in the household to the viewing; there are no drop-ins. Its dogs are on our Happy Staffie Rescue page, and our Worcester Staffy guide covers it in detail.
Forest Dog Rescue, Far Forest
Begun over 40 years ago by a local vet as the Tanwood Stray Fund, Forest Dog Rescue has owned its kennels at Far Forest, in the Wyre Forest about 14 miles north-west, since 2010. It takes dogs from private homes, strays and other charities, and its homepage counts 251 dogs rehomed in 2025, every one vaccinated and neutered, after a thorough home check. Viewings are by appointment: ring or email first. It is closed on Wednesdays. Its dogs are on our Forest Dog Rescue page.
Birch Hill Dog Rescue, Neen Sollars
Birch Hill Dog Rescue has rescued dogs since the mid-1990s from kennels at Neen Sollars, near Cleobury Mortimer, about 16 miles away in the South Shropshire hills, and its charity shop is on Mealcheapen Street in Worcester. It cares for up to 24 dogs at once, and dogs that can't be rehomed stay for life.
You fill in its adoption form or call, and it gets in touch when it has a match; some dogs need a few visits. Every adoption starts with a one-month trial, and it will always take a dog back. Viewings are by appointment only. Its dogs are on our Birch Hill page.
Home Run Hounds, Hagley and Wombourne
Home Run Hounds rehomes retired racing greyhounds, and the dogs listed near Worcester are at its Broadmarsh kennels at Hagley, about 16 miles, and Monkspath Cottage at Wombourne, about 23 miles. You visit the kennels by appointment, it does a home visit or a video tour of your home, and a £30 non-refundable deposit holds a dog for up to two weeks. Its Foster-To-Adopt option lets you foster for 2 or 3 weeks first. The donation is £200, less the deposit, and its staff are all unpaid volunteers. Its dogs are on our Home Run Hounds page.
Wythall Animal Sanctuary
About 19 miles north-east, at Wythall, Wythall Animal Sanctuary rehomes dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs, and gives priority to homes within 15 miles of it. Dogs usually need around three meets, fencing of at least 5ft for most, and no more than 4 hours alone; it won't rehome to homes with children under 3. Each dog's page gives its fee: £150, £250 or £350. Its dogs are on our Wythall page.
Cheltenham Animal Shelter
Nearly 100 years old and on its Gardners Lane site since 1939, Cheltenham Animal Shelter rehomes dogs, cats and small animals from across Gloucestershire, about 21 miles south. You email its dogs team, not phone, and it sends an application; if you are a good match it aims to reply within 7 days, and keeps your form for 3 months. After you meet the dog with a Rehomer, a non-refundable deposit reserves it, and it aims to have dogs home within a week. The fee is £300, or £500 for two, with an engraved ID tag and four weeks' Petplan cover. Its dogs are on our Cheltenham Animal Shelter page.
High Hopes Dog Rescue
A foster-based Worcestershire rescue founded in 2018, High Hopes Dog Rescue takes dogs from shelters in Romania, Bosnia and Macedonia as well as the UK, and many of its dogs wait in paid kennels. Apply on its own site and ask it about the fee. Its dogs listed with us are on our High Hopes page.
How to choose between them
Start with the dog, not the rescue: our Worcester dogs page lists the dogs at every rescue above, so filter by size, age or breed and see who has it. Then weigh these five things:
- Children. Happy Staffie Rescue won't rehome to homes with children under 5, and Wythall not with children under 3. Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter rehomes to families when a dog's history is known, and otherwise to adults or older children.
- Time alone. Happy Staffie and Wythall both say no more than four hours. If you work full days, ask the rescue before you apply.
- Your other dog. Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter and Happy Staffie both want your dog at a meeting, and Wythall asks for proof it is neutered and vaccinated.
- How many visits. Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter expects three meets within a fortnight and Wythall around three; Home Run Hounds lets you take your time, and Birch Hill starts with a one-month trial.
- The fee. From £200 for a Home Run Hounds greyhound to £300 at Newland or Cheltenham, and £225 to £275 for an adult at Happy Staffie. Forest Dog Rescue and Birch Hill don't publish theirs.
Kidderminster, Malvern and Cheltenham
For Kidderminster, Stourport and Bewdley, three of the rescues are on your doorstep: Happy Staffie Rescue in the town, Forest Dog Rescue at Far Forest and Birch Hill at Neen Sollars. Our Kidderminster dogs page lists Worcester's whole catchment, measured from Kidderminster.
For Cheltenham, Cheltenham Animal Shelter on Gardners Lane is the town's own shelter, and our Cheltenham dogs page lists its dogs first. For Malvern, the nearest is Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter at Newland, on the Worcester side of the town. In England a stray anywhere in these towns is reported to the council, here through Worcestershire Regulatory Services.
Is there a dog pound in Worcester?
Not one you can visit to choose a dog. Worcestershire Regulatory Services runs the dog warden service for Worcester and the rest of the county, and for Cheltenham, Gloucester and Tewkesbury. A dog it picks up goes to its kennels for 7 clear days, then becomes the council's and is rehomed through partner charities. It no longer passes on offers from people who want to adopt a stray, and it doesn't say which charity took a dog, so watch the rescues' own pages instead.
People also search for the RSPCA Worcester & Mid-Worcestershire Branch, a separately registered charity affiliated to the RSPCA, with a rehoming centre just outside Kempsey. It rehomes its own animals through its own site. We don't list RSPCA animals, so you won't see its dogs on our pages: look on its site and apply to it directly.
Dogs Trust Evesham and Blue Cross Bromsgrove
Two big national centres sit within reach. Dogs Trust Evesham, on Pitcher's Hill about 16 miles south-east, is open for general browsing from 12pm to 4pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, and Dogs Trust charges £300 to adopt in England. Blue Cross has a rehoming centre at Catshill, near Bromsgrove. We don't list either charity's dogs, so search their own sites.
What dogs come into rescue around Worcester
Greyhounds are the largest single group: on 3 November 2026 about a third of the dogs listed with us near Worcester were Home Run Hounds' retired racers, with crossbreeds next, a few Staffies at Forest Dog Rescue and Happy Staffie Rescue, and dogs from Romania with High Hopes. Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter takes in strays and owners' dogs, and says it very rarely gets puppies under 6 months, and doesn't advertise them when it does.
The live count on our Worcester dogs page is always the current picture, and our rescue puppies guide explains how to find a young dog.
The law in England
Microchipping and change of keeper
In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
Lucy's Law: buying a puppy
In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
Banned dog types
In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
XL Bully dogs
In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).
