Adopting a dog in Ipswich

Before this update we had no dogs listed within 25 miles of Ipswich. Two Suffolk charities now add theirs. Greyhound Trust Suffolk keeps retired racers at its kennels in Capel St Mary, about 6 miles south west on the A12, and Suffolk Animal Rescue has its own kennels in Pettistree, near Wickham Market, about 10 miles away.

Suffolk Animal Rescue bought the Pettistree site in 2024 and says it takes dogs whatever their breed or type, and when we checked on 6 November 2026 its list included bull breed and mastiff crosses, with most cards asking for a home with no young children.

Lost and stray dogs in Ipswich

In England an unclaimed stray goes to the council (GOV.UK). Ipswich Borough Council collects strays from 8.30am to 9pm every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, and keeps a register of dogs reported lost. Getting a dog back costs at least £95 if it wears a current tag or has an up to date chip, £149 if not, plus £20 a day paid to the kennels.

What adopting a dog costs around Ipswich

Greyhound Trust Suffolk charges a homing fee of £250, with the dog neutered, vaccinated, chipped, its teeth cleaned and four weeks of insurance. Suffolk Animal Rescue sets minimum donations by age: £500 for a puppy under 6 months, £450 from 6 to 18 months, £400 for an adult and £350 for a dog over 8.

Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

How the Suffolk dog rescues match you with a dog

Neither rescue lets you walk in and choose. Their own pages (Greyhound Trust Suffolk, Suffolk Animal Rescue) set out the steps:

  • Greyhounds: questions, then a Saturday visit. The branch asks a few questions by phone or email, then books you into the kennels, usually on a Saturday morning, to walk the hounds. It wants 6 foot fences, someone to let the dog out if you work, and your own dog brought along to meet them. Its homing page says it does not cat test.
  • Suffolk Animal Rescue: the form, then two visits. Most dogs on its dogs page have an online application. Meetings are by appointment, every dog needs at least two visits, and a home check looks at your garden and how long the dog would be left.
  • Adult homes. On 6 November 2026 none of the cards on Suffolk Animal Rescue's dogs page said yes to cats, and most asked for a home without other pets or young children.

Blue Cross and the RSPCA near Ipswich

Two more charities rehome dogs close to the town, and we don't show their animals. The Blue Cross Suffolk rehoming centre is on Bourne Hill, Wherstead, at Ipswich's southern edge, and meetings there need an appointment. RSPCA Suffolk Central has an animal centre at Martlesham, near Woodbridge. Search both sites as well as ours.

More help for Ipswich dog adopters

Our guide to dog rescues in Ipswich and Suffolk compares the two rescues in detail, our greyhound guide covers the Capel St Mary kennels, and our rescue puppies guide is for anyone who typed "puppies for sale" around Ipswich, Colchester or Suffolk. Who is waiting shows on the greyhound and older dogs pages, and our Colchester and Bury St Edmunds pages start from those towns.

The law in England

  • Microchipping and change of keeper. In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
  • Lucy's Law: buying a puppy. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
  • Banned dog types. In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
  • XL Bully dogs. In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

Ipswich dog adoption FAQ

Where can I adopt a rescue dog in Ipswich?

Neither rescue we list is in the town itself. Greyhound Trust Suffolk keeps its greyhounds at Capel St Mary, about 6 miles away, and Suffolk Animal Rescue has its dog kennels at Pettistree, near Wickham Market, about 10 miles out. Their dogs join our pages with this update, and each charity handles its own applications.

How much does it cost to adopt a dog near Ipswich?

Greyhound Trust Suffolk charges £250 for a greyhound. Suffolk Animal Rescue asks a minimum donation of £400 for an adult, £350 for a dog over 8, £450 from 6 to 18 months and £500 for a puppy under 6 months.

Who collects stray dogs in Ipswich?

Ipswich Borough Council, from 8.30am to 9pm every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. An owner pays at least £95 to get a tagged or chipped dog back and £149 for one without, plus £20 a day to the kennels.

Are Blue Cross Suffolk's dogs on LocalPetFinder?

No. The Blue Cross centre at Wherstead and RSPCA Suffolk Central at Martlesham both rehome dogs near Ipswich. Their dogs are not on our pages, so check their own websites as well.

Can I adopt a dog near Ipswich if I have a cat?

It is harder. Greyhound Trust Suffolk does not cat test and homes greyhounds with cats only in certain circumstances, and on 6 November 2026 every dog card at Suffolk Animal Rescue said no to cats.

Do I need a garden to adopt a dog near Ipswich?

Yes, for a greyhound: Greyhound Trust Suffolk asks for a secure garden with 6 foot fences. Suffolk Animal Rescue's home check also looks for a secure garden.

How do I rehome my dog in Ipswich?

Suffolk Animal Rescue has an online surrender form for dogs. Our Ipswich rehoming page sets out every route.

LocalPetFinder and other pet sites

Tap a question to expand

Is LocalPetFinder the same as Petfinder?

No. LocalPetFinder is an independent UK website and is not connected with Petfinder. We bring together dogs, cats and rabbits from UK rescues and rehoming centres, and every profile links to the rescue that cares for the animal, so you apply with them directly.

How is LocalPetFinder different from Pets4Homes?

Pets4Homes describes itself as the UK’s largest online pet marketplace, connecting buyers with breeders as well as shelters and charities. LocalPetFinder is for adoption: our listings come from rescues and rehoming centres and from owners rehoming their own pet, each checked by a reviewer before it goes live. We do not take adverts from breeders.

Can I find RSPCA animals on LocalPetFinder?

No. We do not list the RSPCA’s animals, at its national centres or its branches. To see them, use RSPCA Find a Pet, the RSPCA’s own search for animals in its centres and branches across England and Wales.
