Adopting a dog in Middlesbrough

Two dog rescues are close to the town. S.A.R.A. The Ann Prosser Foundation is at Foxrush Farm on Kirkleatham Lane, Redcar, about 7 miles away, and rehomes dogs and cats. Maxi's Mates has its kennels at Carlin Howe Farm, Dunsdale, near Guisborough, about 8 miles away, with 56 kennel spaces for stray, abandoned and surrendered dogs.

Further out, Durham Dogs & Cats Home is at Coxhoe in County Durham, about 14 miles north west, Animal Krackers is on Wearside, about 23 miles north, and Greyhound Rescue North East, a sighthound charity based in the north east of England, lists dogs too. Every profile here links to the rescue that cares for the dog, and you apply with them: we don't rehome dogs ourselves.

Stray dogs around Middlesbrough

In England, if you find a stray dog and can't contact the owner, you must report it to the council. Maxi's Mates says it cares for the stray dogs picked up by the local authority in Redcar & Cleveland and Hambleton, so a stray from those areas that nobody claims may later appear on its meet the dogs page.

What adopting a dog costs near Middlesbrough

S.A.R.A. asks an adoption fee of £200 for one dog or £300 for a pair, which it says "helps towards some of the veterinary treatment given". Its dogs are vaccinated, microchipped, treated for fleas and worms and neutered unless there is a medical reason not to, and older dogs are blood tested.

Further out, Animal Krackers asks a minimum of £100 for a dog, Greyhound Rescue North East a minimum adoption donation of £150, and Durham Dogs & Cats Home a £200 donation. Maxi's Mates doesn't publish a fee, so ask it.

Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

How rescues near Middlesbrough decide who adopts

Each rescue runs its own process, so read its page before you apply. S.A.R.A. sets its steps out in full.

  • Meet, walk, home check, one-week trial. S.A.R.A. looks at your whole lifestyle, books an appointment to meet the dog, and a staff member walks with you. Some dogs need several visits. If all goes well it checks your home, then the dog goes on a one-week trial before the adoption is final.
  • Phone or the form at Maxi's Mates. Maxi's Mates takes enquiries about adopting on 0750 710 4636 or through the contact form on its site, and lists its dogs on its meet the dogs page, which notes that not all of them are ready for adoption just yet.
  • Register first at Durham. Durham Dogs & Cats Home asks you to register and send photos of your home and garden, and renters show that the landlord allows pets.

Dogs Trust Darlington

Dogs Trust Darlington is at Hill House Farm, Sadberge, about 10 miles south west. It opens for general browsing on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 4pm, with Wednesday and Friday mornings by appointment. We don't list its dogs, so search its own site.

The law in England

  • Microchipping and change of keeper. In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
  • Lucy's Law: buying a puppy. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
  • Banned dog types. In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
  • XL Bully dogs. In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

Middlesbrough dog adoption FAQ

Tap a question to expand

Where can I adopt a rescue dog in Middlesbrough?

S.A.R.A. The Ann Prosser Foundation at Redcar and Maxi's Mates near Guisborough are the dog rescues closest to Middlesbrough, each about 7 to 8 miles away. Durham Dogs & Cats Home at Coxhoe and the rescues on Wearside list dogs with us too. You apply to the rescue that cares for the dog.

How much does it cost to adopt a dog in Middlesbrough?

It depends on the rescue. S.A.R.A. asks £200 for one dog or £300 for a pair, Animal Krackers a minimum of £100, Greyhound Rescue North East a minimum donation of £150, and Durham Dogs & Cats Home a £200 donation. Maxi's Mates doesn't publish a fee, so ask it.

Does S.A.R.A. let you take a dog on trial?

Yes. After you have met the dog, walked with a staff member and passed a home check, the dog goes home with you on a one-week trial so the rescue can see it is settling in before the adoption is final.

What happens to stray dogs found around Middlesbrough?

In England you must report a stray dog to the council if you can't contact the owner. Maxi's Mates cares for the stray dogs picked up in Redcar & Cleveland and Hambleton, so an unclaimed stray from those areas may later be listed for adoption there.

Is there a Dogs Trust near Middlesbrough?

Yes. Dogs Trust Darlington is at Sadberge, about 10 miles south west, open for browsing on five afternoons a week. We don't list its dogs, so search its own site.

How do I rehome my dog in Middlesbrough?

Maxi's Mates cares for surrendered dogs from Redcar & Cleveland and Hambleton as well as strays, though its kennels run at capacity, and Dogs Trust's Homestay can keep your dog with you while it finds a home. Our Middlesbrough rehoming page lists every local option.

LocalPetFinder and other pet sites

Tap a question to expand

Is LocalPetFinder the same as Petfinder?

No. LocalPetFinder is an independent UK website and is not connected with Petfinder. We bring together dogs, cats and rabbits from UK rescues and rehoming centres, and every profile links to the rescue that cares for the animal, so you apply with them directly.

How is LocalPetFinder different from Pets4Homes?

Pets4Homes describes itself as the UK’s largest online pet marketplace, connecting buyers with breeders as well as shelters and charities. LocalPetFinder is for adoption: our listings come from rescues and rehoming centres and from owners rehoming their own pet, each checked by a reviewer before it goes live. We do not take adverts from breeders.

Can I find RSPCA animals on LocalPetFinder?

No. We do not list the RSPCA’s animals, at its national centres or its branches. To see them, use RSPCA Find a Pet, the RSPCA’s own search for animals in its centres and branches across England and Wales.
