Rescue puppies in Blackpool and Preston: where to adopt one

Far more people around Blackpool and Preston search for puppies for sale than for rescue puppies, and the rescues here see few young dogs. This guide is honest about that: where rescue puppies do turn up within reach of Preston, what they cost against a bought puppy, and how to avoid the scams that target puppy hunters on the Fylde coast and beyond.

By the LocalPetFinder Team · Checked 5 November 2026

Where rescue puppies turn up near Blackpool and Preston

The live count on our Preston puppies page and our Blackpool dogs page is the place to start. On 5 November 2026 the youngest dogs within 25 miles of Preston were a few of 5 to 9 months at Freshfields Animal Rescue at Ince Blundell, about 21 miles south-west, and a six-month-old at Carla Lane Animals in Need in Melling.

Homeless Hounds, Fylde coast

Homeless Hounds takes in stray and abandoned dogs from council kennels, so a puppy only arrives when one is found or handed to a warden. It sets a separate puppy donation, £350 minimum, and like every dog it rehomes a puppy only within Lancashire, never to a family with children under 5, after a volunteer home check. Its dogs are on our Homeless Hounds page.

Carla Lane Animals in Need, Melling

About 20 miles south-west of Preston, Carla Lane Animals in Need has its own centre. You send its adoption questionnaire first and it contacts you if a match comes up, so puppy hunters should apply early rather than wait for a photo. Its FAQs put puppies at the higher end of its £300 to £450 dog fees. Its animals are on our Carla Lane page.

Young Labradors at Eccleston

Labrador Rescue (North West Area) at Eccleston, about 8 miles south, takes in Labradors whose owners' circumstances have changed. It weighs every application for a particular dog together, so you apply for a dog on its site rather than join a puppy list.

Rules that matter more for a puppy

Puppies need time, so rescues around here look hard at your day:

Why so few puppies are in rescue here

The rescues near Preston mostly take in adults: council strays at Homeless Hounds, owners' Labradors at Eccleston, and retired racers with Northern Greyhound Rescue. That makes a young adult of one or two the realistic rescue route for many families; ask the rescue about its manners with children and dogs, something a puppy can't yet show you.

Searching "puppies for sale Blackpool" or "Preston"?

No rescue dog is for sale. Once your application is in, the rescue looks for a dog that fits your household, and its fee or donation helps pay for the vet care the dog has had. LocalPetFinder sells nothing either: every puppy on our Preston puppies page goes home through its own rescue.

If you do buy, remember Lucy's Law, in force in England from 6 April 2020: pet shops and dealers may not sell a puppy under six months, so it must come straight from the breeder or from a rehoming centre. Blue Cross advises meeting the puppy with its mother and the rest of the litter; a seller who can't arrange that is a reason to walk away. The Royal Kennel Club lists breeders on its Find a puppy pages.

The law in England

Microchipping and change of keeper

In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.

Lucy's Law: buying a puppy

In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Banned dog types

In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.

XL Bully dogs

In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

Where can I find a rescue puppy near Preston?

The closest young dogs on 5 November 2026 were at Freshfields Animal Rescue at Ince Blundell and Carla Lane Animals in Need at Melling, about 20 miles away. Apply early to Carla Lane, which contacts you when a match comes up.

How much is a rescue puppy near Preston?

Homeless Hounds asks a minimum donation of £350 for a puppy, and Carla Lane Animals in Need puts puppies at the top of its £300 to £450 range. Blue Cross says a bought puppy runs to £400 to £3,000.

Is there such a thing as a free puppy in Preston or Blackpool?

Not from a rescue: each one asks a fee or donation that goes towards vet care. Nobody has checked a "free" puppy advert, so meet the puppy and its mother and take the microchip number first.

Can I adopt a puppy from Homeless Hounds if I live outside Lancashire?

No. Homeless Hounds considers applications from Lancashire only, and none from families with children under 5. A volunteer checks your home before you meet the dog.

Is a young adult dog a better choice than a puppy?

For many families, yes. By one or two a dog's temperament has settled, so the rescue already knows how it behaves around children and other dogs, and near Preston there are far more of them in rescue than puppies.

What should I check before buying a puppy in Blackpool?

Meet the puppy where it lives, with its mother, take its microchip number, and keep your money until you have done both. In England, Lucy's Law means only the breeder or a rehoming centre may sell or rehome a puppy under six months.
