Rescue guide
Dog rescues in Kent near Canterbury, compared
East Kent has no big rehoming centre in Canterbury itself: its rescue dogs live with Thanet fosterers, at a sanctuary outside Margate, in greyhound kennels at Wingham or at a centre in New Romney. This guide sets those dog rescues side by side, with each one's fee, the homes it accepts or turns down, and what to do about a stray.

How each dog rescue near Canterbury works
Published fees run from £150 to £375, and the rules vary even more. Read the notes for the rescue that has your dog before you apply.
Angels 4 Dogs Rescue, Thanet
A group of Thanet volunteers started Angels 4 Dogs in 2011. Its dogs come from UK council pounds and from Romania and wait in foster homes or a small number of kennels. Its adoption page says it replies to a form within 7 working days, shows you a dog only once your form is approved, then visits your home. It rehomes inside Kent and nowhere else.
Each dog's page sets its own rules on fencing and children, so read it closely. Its dog list suggests meeting a dog several times before it goes home. Its dogs are on our Angels 4 Dogs page.
Kent Greyhound Rescue, county-wide
Run entirely by volunteers from a base near Hythe, Kent Greyhound Rescue has no public centre: its hounds stay with fosterers or in private boarding kennels around Kent. After the online form you send a video of your home and garden, visit the dog with your whole household, and then have a home check with photo ID.
It won't place a dog with children under 8, and it marks each hound cat friendly, cat workable or neither. Its greyhounds and lurchers are on our Kent Greyhound Rescue page.
Retired Greyhounds Canterbury, Wingham
An independent charity set up in 2020, Retired Greyhounds Canterbury runs kennels on Rusham Road, Wingham, open for homing from 10am to noon every day by appointment. Its homing page explains that the team asks about your home and family, then lets you walk dogs that might suit, more than once if you need. Once you reserve one, a volunteer checks your fences.
TAG Pet Rescue, near Margate
Founded in 1988 as the Thanet Animal Group, TAG Pet Rescue has had its sanctuary at Lydden Farm since 2002 and keeps it closed to casual visitors. Its dog page asks for a form, then a home visit, and only then a meeting; many of its dogs come in through Dover, and it homes within about an hour's drive of there.
Last Chance Animal Rescue, New Romney
Last Chance opened its second centre at New Romney in 2015, alongside the original in west Kent; it is open 11am to 3pm, Wednesday to Sunday. Its dogs are local handed-in pets and dogs from Welsh pounds. Its adoption policy asks the whole household to visit, wants a fence of at least 5 feet, depending on the dog, and rarely has a dog for a shared garden. Check its dog page before you travel, as dogs at both centres share one list.
Choosing a rescue from Canterbury
Start on our Canterbury dogs page and filter by age, size or breed. Then check these points against the rescue you pick:
- Where you live. Angels 4 Dogs homes only in Kent; TAG homes within about an hour of Dover; Kent Greyhound Rescue also places dogs outside the county.
- Children. Kent Greyhound Rescue sets 8 as its youngest age. Angels 4 Dogs gives an age on each dog's page.
- Other pets. Last Chance won't home to a household whose pets aren't neutered, or a bitch with another bitch. Kent Greyhound Rescue tells you whether a hound can be trained to live with a cat.
- Timing. Kent Greyhound Rescue expects you to collect within a few days of the home check, and Last Chance won't rehome just before a house move or holiday.
What should I do about a stray dog in Canterbury?
If you can't find the owner, the law in England says you must tell the council. Canterbury City Council's dog warden service takes reports of lost dogs and dogs that look lost; its page lists no reclaim fees, so ask when you call.
Which dogs come up in rescue around Canterbury
Sighthounds stand out. On 5 November 2026 greyhounds and lurchers outnumbered every other named breed listed with us near the city (crossbreeds aside), and our greyhound guide covers both greyhound charities. Angels 4 Dogs had a run of young crossbreeds, mostly 5 to 7 months, which our rescue puppies guide looks at.
Our Margate, Ashford, Dover and Folkestone pages start from those towns. The count on our Canterbury dogs page is always the current one.
The law in England
Microchipping and change of keeper
In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
Lucy's Law: buying a puppy
In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
Banned dog types
In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
XL Bully dogs
In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).
