What Staffies are like to live with

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a British breed. The Royal Kennel Club says it was developed in the Black Country of Staffordshire and northern parts of Birmingham, and was recognised in the 1930s. It sums the breed up as "highly intelligent and affectionate especially with children", and says the breed standard notes its intelligence and affinity with children.

Staffies listed in and around Belfast today

As of 8 November 2026, 4 Staffies are listed with rescues in and around Belfast on LocalPetFinder: by their listed age, 3 adults. The rest have no age we can read, so check the profile.

1 of them is listed as a cross, as the rescue describes it: Staffordshire Bull Terrier Cross. Breed labels on rescue listings are often a best guess from looks.

The rescues mark 2 as able to live with children and 1 with other dogs. Where a profile says nothing, it doesn't mean no: ask the rescue.

How many rescue Staffies are available for adoption in Belfast?

As of 8 November 2026, 4 Staffies are listed for adoption in and around Belfast on LocalPetFinder, from Assisi Animal Sanctuary, Almost Home Animal Rescue NI and The Barn Animal Rescue. Which rescues near Belfast have Staffies right now, and how old are they?

As of 8 November 2026, Assisi Animal Sanctuary (at Conlig, about 10 miles away): 2, Almost Home Animal Rescue NI (at Moira, about 14 miles away): 1 and The Barn Animal Rescue (at Carrowdore, about 14 miles away): 1. Where can I adopt a Staffy in Belfast?

With the rescue that has the dog. Today the Staffies on this page are with Assisi Animal Sanctuary (2), Almost Home Animal Rescue NI (1) and The Barn Animal Rescue (1). Open a profile and apply to that rescue: each one runs its own application, home check and adoption fee. We don't rehome animals ourselves.

Are Staffies a banned breed in the UK?

No. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type. The banned types are the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully, and gov.uk says a dog's type is judged on what it looks like rather than its breed or name. Rescues cannot rehome a banned type, so none are listed on LocalPetFinder.

Are Staffies good with children?

Often, but not always. The Royal Kennel Club describes the breed as "affectionate especially with children", while PDSA notes Staffies are very high energy and might not suit families with younger children. Ask the rescue whether this dog has lived with children and what age of children they would rehome it with; the rescue's assessment of the dog matters more than the breed.

How much does it cost to adopt a Staffy in Belfast?

The Staffies listed in and around Belfast today are with Assisi Animal Sanctuary at Conlig, about 10 miles away (2), Almost Home Animal Rescue NI at Moira, about 14 miles away (1) and The Barn Animal Rescue at Carrowdore, about 14 miles away (1); each profile shows that rescue's fee. Are there Staffy puppies for sale in Belfast?

No. We don't list animals for sale. Every Staffy on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. The 4 Staffies listed in and around Belfast today are with Assisi Animal Sanctuary at Conlig, about 10 miles away (2), Almost Home Animal Rescue NI at Moira, about 14 miles away (1) and The Barn Animal Rescue at Carrowdore, about 14 miles away (1), and each rescue shows its own fee on the profile. If you searched "staffy puppies for sale Belfast", the Staffies here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price.

Can I get a free Staffy to a good home in Belfast, or one under £500?

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Of the 4 Staffies listed in and around Belfast today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; the nearest rescue is Assisi Animal Sanctuary at Conlig, about 10 miles away. Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £287.50 for a puppy or adult dog. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. In Northern Ireland all dogs must be microchipped at eight weeks old, so ask to see the microchip details (see nidirect).

Not right now: none of the 4 listed in and around Belfast is under a year old by its listed age. Puppies do get listed, so check back or look at the adults, whose rescues can tell you much more about their character.
