The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a British breed. The Royal Kennel Club says it was developed in the Black Country of Staffordshire and northern parts of Birmingham, and was recognised in the 1930s. It sums the breed up as "highly intelligent and affectionate especially with children", and says the breed standard notes its intelligence and affinity with children.
As of 8 November 2026, 6 Staffies are listed with rescues in and around Cardiff on LocalPetFinder: by their listed age, 1 puppy aged 12 months or under, 3 adults and 2 aged 7 or over.
5 of them are listed as a cross, as the rescue describes it: Staffordshire Bull Terrier Cross (5). Breed labels on rescue listings are often a best guess from looks.
The rescues mark 3 as able to live with children, 2 with cats and 1 with other dogs. Where a profile says nothing, it doesn't mean no: ask the rescue.

No. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type. The banned types are the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully, and gov.uk says a dog's type is judged on what it looks like rather than its breed or name. Rescues cannot rehome a banned type, so none are listed on LocalPetFinder.
Often, but not always. The Royal Kennel Club describes the breed as "affectionate especially with children", while PDSA notes Staffies are very high energy and might not suit families with younger children. Ask the rescue whether this dog has lived with children and what age of children they would rehome it with; the rescue's assessment of the dog matters more than the breed.

Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £300, and Blue Cross from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.
