What Staffies are like to live with

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a British breed. The Royal Kennel Club says it was developed in the Black Country of Staffordshire and northern parts of Birmingham, and was recognised in the 1930s. It sums the breed up as "highly intelligent and affectionate especially with children", and says the breed standard notes its intelligence and affinity with children.

Staffies listed in Wales today

As of 7 November 2026, 22 Staffies are listed with rescues in Wales on LocalPetFinder: by their listed age, 4 puppies aged 12 months or under, 12 adults and 6 aged 7 or over.

19 of them are listed as a cross, as the rescue describes it: Staffordshire Bull Terrier Cross (13), Collie x Staffy (2) and Boxer x Staffy and others. Breed labels on rescue listings are often a best guess from looks.

The rescues mark 12 as able to live with children, 2 with cats and 6 with other dogs. Where a profile says nothing, it doesn't mean no: ask the rescue.

Breed descriptions are general. Every rescue animal is an individual, so the rescue's own assessment of the animal comes first.

How many rescue Staffies are available for adoption in Wales?

As of 7 November 2026, 22 Staffies are listed for adoption in Wales on LocalPetFinder, from North Clwyd Animal Rescue, All Creatures Great and Small, Cardiff Dogs Home, Many Tears Animal Rescue and West Wales Poundies Dog Rescue. Each profile links to the rescue, and you apply to adopt with them directly.

Which rescues near Wales have Staffies right now, and how old are they?

As of 7 November 2026, North Clwyd Animal Rescue (at Trelogan): 10, All Creatures Great and Small (near Cwmbran): 3, Cardiff Dogs Home (at Cardiff): 3, Many Tears Animal Rescue (at Llanelli): 3 and West Wales Poundies Dog Rescue (at Llandeilo): 3. By age, that is 4 puppies, 12 adult dogs and 6 older dogs. The newest was added on 7 November 2026. Each profile links to the rescue, which handles the adoption.

Where can I adopt a Staffy in Wales?

With the rescue that has the dog. Today the Staffies on this page are with North Clwyd Animal Rescue (10), All Creatures Great and Small (3), Cardiff Dogs Home (3), Many Tears Animal Rescue (3) and West Wales Poundies Dog Rescue (3). Open a profile and apply to that rescue: each one runs its own application, home check and adoption fee. We don't rehome animals ourselves.

Are Staffies a banned breed in the UK?

No. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type. The banned types are the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully, and gov.uk says a dog's type is judged on what it looks like rather than its breed or name. Rescues cannot rehome a banned type, so none are listed on LocalPetFinder.

Are Staffies good with children?

Often, but not always. The Royal Kennel Club describes the breed as "affectionate especially with children", while PDSA notes Staffies are very high energy and might not suit families with younger children. Ask the rescue whether this dog has lived with children and what age of children they would rehome it with; the rescue's assessment of the dog matters more than the breed.

How much does it cost to adopt a Staffy in Wales?

The Staffies listed in Wales today are with North Clwyd Animal Rescue at Trelogan (10), All Creatures Great and Small near Cwmbran (3), Cardiff Dogs Home at Cardiff (3) and 2 other rescues; each profile shows that rescue's fee. Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

Are there Staffy puppies for sale in Wales?

No. We don't list animals for sale. Every Staffy on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. The 22 Staffies listed in Wales today are with North Clwyd Animal Rescue at Trelogan (10), All Creatures Great and Small near Cwmbran (3), Cardiff Dogs Home at Cardiff (3) and 2 other rescues, and each rescue shows its own fee on the profile. For comparison, Dogs Trust £300, and Blue Cross puppies under six months start from £525. If you searched "staffy puppies for sale Wales", the Staffies here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price. In Wales, Lucy's Law has meant since 10 September 2021 that puppies can only be bought where they were bred, or from a rescue or rehoming centre.

Can I get a free Staffy to a good home in Wales, or one under £500?

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Of the 22 Staffies listed in Wales today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; the nearest rescue is North Clwyd Animal Rescue at Trelogan. Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £300, and Blue Cross from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.

Are there Staffy puppies for adoption in Wales?

Yes: 4 puppies of the 22 listed in Wales are 12 months or under by their listed age.

Are there older Staffies for adoption in Wales?

Yes: 6 of the 22 listed in Wales are aged 7 or over by their listed age. Some rescues charge less for older dogs: Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over.
