The Royal Kennel Club calls the Poodle a "glamorous, intelligent breed descended from European duck hunters". It says the breed originates in Germany as a water retriever, and that the famous trim is "traditional and very practical": the hindquarters were clipped to help the dog swim, and bands of hair were left on the joints and tail tip for protection from cold.
As of 8 November 2026, 14 Poodles are listed with rescues in Wales on LocalPetFinder: by their listed age, 1 puppy aged 12 months or under, 11 adults and 2 aged 7 or over.
5 of them are listed as a cross, as the rescue describes it: Poodle Cross (4) and Bichon Frise x Poodle. Breed labels on rescue listings are often a best guess from looks.
The rescues mark 9 as able to live with children and 13 with other dogs. Where a profile says nothing, it doesn't mean no: ask the rescue.

With the rescue that has the dog. Today the Poodles on this page are with Many Tears Animal Rescue (14). Open a profile and apply to that rescue: each one runs its own application, home check and adoption fee. We don't rehome animals ourselves.
The Royal Kennel Club lists all three Poodle sizes as not shedding, and Dogs Trust describes low shedding, but the coat needs grooming every day and professional clipping from time to time. Doodle Trust says no dog is allergy friendly, so if someone at home has allergies, ask the rescue whether you can spend time with the dog first.
Size. The Royal Kennel Club recognises three varieties that share one breed standard: the Standard is over 38 cm at the shoulder, the Miniature between 28 and 38 cm, and the Toy under 28 cm. All three need up to an hour of exercise a day and grooming every day.
It depends on the dog, not the breed. Today the rescues mark 9 of the 14 Poodles listed in Wales as able to live with children. Where a profile says nothing, ask the rescue what age of children the dog could live with.

No. We don't list animals for sale. Every Poodle on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. For comparison, Dogs Trust £300, and Blue Cross puppies under six months start from £525. If you searched "poodle puppies for sale Wales", the Poodles here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price. In Wales, Lucy's Law has meant since 10 September 2021 that puppies can only be bought where they were bred, or from a rescue or rehoming centre.
Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Of the 14 Poodles listed in Wales today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; all are with Many Tears Animal Rescue at Llanelli (14). Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £300, and Blue Cross from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.
