The Border Collie takes its name from the border regions of England, Scotland and Wales, where it worked sheep in the hills. The Royal Kennel Club calls it a "naturally active and intelligent herding specialist and all-round worker", says it is still seen working sheep and cattle, and says it "needs to be engaged to lead a fulfilled life".

More than two hours a day, according to The Royal Kennel Club, which says the breed needs to be engaged to lead a fulfilled life. Dogs Trust adds training and daily enrichment to daily walks and play. Ask the rescue how much this dog needs, as age and health make a difference.
The Royal Kennel Club says a small house can be enough, but pairs it with a large garden and more than two hours of exercise a day. It does not list a flat as suitable, so ask the rescue whether this particular dog could settle in one.
It depends on the dog, not the breed. Most of the 1 Border Collie listed in Wales today don't say either way, so ask the rescue. Where a profile says nothing, ask the rescue what age of children the dog could live with.

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Of the 1 Border Collie listed in Wales today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; all are with Cardiff Dogs Home at Cardiff (1). Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £300, and Blue Cross from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.
