The Royal Kennel Club calls the Cocker a "popular family pet and gundog first bred to hunt woodcock". It says the breed was not recognised as a separate variety until 1893, earned the name "the merry cocker" for its ever-wagging tail, and "remains hugely popular as a family pet". The breed standard describes the ideal temperament as "gentle and affectionate, yet full of life and exuberance".
As of 8 November 2026, 7 Cocker Spaniels are listed with rescues in Wales on LocalPetFinder: by their listed age, 7 adults.
2 of them are listed as a cross, as the rescue describes it: Beagle x Cocker Spaniel (2). Breed labels on rescue listings are often a best guess from looks.
The rescues mark 5 as able to live with children and 6 with other dogs. Where a profile says nothing, it doesn't mean no: ask the rescue.

With the rescue that has the dog. Today the Cocker Spaniels on this page are with Many Tears Animal Rescue (7). Open a profile and apply to that rescue: each one runs its own application, home check and adoption fee. We don't rehome animals ourselves.
Around an hour a day. The Royal Kennel Club lists up to an hour, and PDSA a minimum of an hour, including off-lead time in a secure area. Battersea adds daily mental stimulation such as scent work and puzzle toys. A Cocker from working lines usually needs more.
It can be. PDSA says Cockers are a popular choice for first-time owners because of their gentle natures, but need plenty of patience and training. Battersea says they suit an active household ready for daily exercise, training and grooming. Ask the rescue whether this dog would suit a first home.
It depends on the dog, not the breed. Today the rescues mark 5 of the 7 Cocker Spaniels listed in Wales as able to live with children. Where a profile says nothing, ask the rescue what age of children the dog could live with.
The Cocker Spaniels listed in Wales today are with Many Tears Animal Rescue at Llanelli (7); each profile shows that rescue's fee. Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
No. We don't list animals for sale. Every Cocker Spaniel on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. The 7 Cocker Spaniels listed in Wales today are with Many Tears Animal Rescue at Llanelli (7), and each rescue shows its own fee on the profile. For comparison, Dogs Trust £300, and Blue Cross puppies under six months start from £525. If you searched "cocker spaniel puppies for sale Wales", the Cocker Spaniels here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price. In Wales, Lucy's Law has meant since 10 September 2021 that puppies can only be bought where they were bred, or from a rescue or rehoming centre.
Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Of the 7 Cocker Spaniels listed in Wales today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; all are with Many Tears Animal Rescue at Llanelli (7). Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £300, and Blue Cross from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.
