What Cocker Spaniels are like to live with

The Royal Kennel Club calls the Cocker a "popular family pet and gundog first bred to hunt woodcock". It says the breed was not recognised as a separate variety until 1893, earned the name "the merry cocker" for its ever-wagging tail, and "remains hugely popular as a family pet". The breed standard describes the ideal temperament as "gentle and affectionate, yet full of life and exuberance".

How many rescue Cocker Spaniels are available for adoption in London?

As of 8 November 2026, 2 Cocker Spaniels are listed for adoption in and around London on LocalPetFinder, from Diana Brimblecombe Animal Rescue Centre and Stokenchurch Dog Rescue. Which rescues near London have Cocker Spaniels right now, and how old are they?

As of 8 November 2026, Diana Brimblecombe Animal Rescue Centre (at Hurst, about 31 miles away): 1 and Stokenchurch Dog Rescue (at Stokenchurch, about 35 miles away): 1. The newest was added on 14 October 2026. Each profile links to the rescue, which handles the adoption.

Where can I adopt a Cocker Spaniel in London?

With the rescue that has the dog. Today the Cocker Spaniels on this page are with Diana Brimblecombe Animal Rescue Centre (1) and Stokenchurch Dog Rescue (1). Open a profile and apply to that rescue: each one runs its own application, home check and adoption fee. We don't rehome animals ourselves.

How much exercise does a Cocker Spaniel need?

Around an hour a day. The Royal Kennel Club lists up to an hour, and PDSA a minimum of an hour, including off-lead time in a secure area. Battersea adds daily mental stimulation such as scent work and puzzle toys. A Cocker from working lines usually needs more.

Is a Cocker Spaniel a good first dog?

It can be. PDSA says Cockers are a popular choice for first-time owners because of their gentle natures, but need plenty of patience and training. Battersea says they suit an active household ready for daily exercise, training and grooming. Ask the rescue whether this dog would suit a first home.

Are Cocker Spaniels good with children?

It depends on the dog, not the breed. None of the 2 Cocker Spaniels listed in and around London is marked by its rescue as able to live with children today. Where a profile says nothing, ask the rescue what age of children the dog could live with.

How much does it cost to adopt a Cocker Spaniel in London?

The Cocker Spaniels listed in and around London today are with Diana Brimblecombe Animal Rescue Centre at Hurst, about 31 miles away (1) and Stokenchurch Dog Rescue at Stokenchurch, about 35 miles away (1); each profile shows that rescue's fee. Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Battersea charges £230 for a dog over six months and £275 for a puppy under six months, Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

Are there Cocker Spaniel puppies for sale in London?

No. We don't list animals for sale. Every Cocker Spaniel on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. The 2 Cocker Spaniels listed in and around London today are with Diana Brimblecombe Animal Rescue Centre at Hurst, about 31 miles away (1) and Stokenchurch Dog Rescue at Stokenchurch, about 35 miles away (1), and each rescue shows its own fee on the profile. For comparison, Battersea charges £230 for a dog over six months and £275 for a puppy under six months, and Dogs Trust £300. If you searched "cocker spaniel puppies for sale London", the Cocker Spaniels here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Can I get a free Cocker Spaniel to a good home in London, or one under £500?

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Of the 2 Cocker Spaniels listed in and around London today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; the nearest rescue is Diana Brimblecombe Animal Rescue Centre at Hurst, about 31 miles away. Many rescue fees are under £500: Battersea charges £230 for a dog over six months, Dogs Trust £300, and Blue Cross from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.

Are there Cocker Spaniel puppies for adoption in London?

Not right now: none of the 2 listed in and around London is under a year old by its listed age. Puppies do get listed, so check back or look at the adults, whose rescues can tell you much more about their character.

Are there older Cocker Spaniels for adoption in London?

Not right now: none of the 2 listed in and around London is aged 7 or over by its listed age. Older Cocker Spaniels do come into rescue, so check back. Some rescues charge less for older dogs: Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over.
