What Cocker Spaniels are like to live with

The Royal Kennel Club calls the Cocker a "popular family pet and gundog first bred to hunt woodcock". It says the breed was not recognised as a separate variety until 1893, earned the name "the merry cocker" for its ever-wagging tail, and "remains hugely popular as a family pet". The breed standard describes the ideal temperament as "gentle and affectionate, yet full of life and exuberance".

Cocker Spaniels listed in England today

As of 8 November 2026, 20 Cocker Spaniels are listed with rescues in England on LocalPetFinder: by their listed age, 1 puppy aged 12 months or under, 13 adults and 3 aged 7 or over. The rest have no age we can read, so check the profile.

3 of them are listed as a cross, as the rescue describes it: Cocker Cross, Cocker Spaniel Cross and Collie/Cocker Spaniel Cross. Breed labels on rescue listings are often a best guess from looks.

The rescues mark 3 as able to live with children, 1 with cats and 8 with other dogs. Where a profile says nothing, it doesn't mean no: ask the rescue.

Breed descriptions are general. Every rescue animal is an individual, so the rescue's own assessment of the animal comes first.

How many rescue Cocker Spaniels are available for adoption in England?

As of 8 November 2026, 20 Cocker Spaniels are listed for adoption in England on LocalPetFinder, from Animals In Need Northamptonshire, Aireworth Dogs in Need, Best Life Dog Rescue, Birch Hill Dog Rescue, Diana Brimblecombe Animal Rescue Centre, Dogs' Friends, Eden Animal Rescue, Greenleaf Animal Rescue, Linbee Dog Rehoming, Many Tears Animal Rescue, Midlands Dog Rescue, Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare, Stokenchurch Dog Rescue, Thornberry Animal Sanctuary and West Yorkshire Dog Rescue. Each profile links to the rescue, and you apply to adopt with them directly.

Which rescues near England have Cocker Spaniels right now, and how old are they?

As of 8 November 2026, Animals In Need Northamptonshire (at Wellingborough): 6, Aireworth Dogs in Need (at Keighley): 1, Best Life Dog Rescue (at Doncaster): 1, Birch Hill Dog Rescue (at Neen Sollars): 1, Diana Brimblecombe Animal Rescue Centre (at Hurst): 1 and Dogs' Friends (at Ashcott): 1, and 9 more. By age, that is 1 puppy, 13 adult dogs and 3 older dogs, plus 3 with no age given. The newest was added on 7 November 2026. Each profile links to the rescue, which handles the adoption.

Where can I adopt a Cocker Spaniel in England?

With the rescue that has the dog. Today the Cocker Spaniels on this page are with Animals In Need Northamptonshire (6), Aireworth Dogs in Need (1), Best Life Dog Rescue (1), Birch Hill Dog Rescue (1), Diana Brimblecombe Animal Rescue Centre (1), Dogs' Friends (1) and 9 other rescues. Open a profile and apply to that rescue: each one runs its own application, home check and adoption fee. We don't rehome animals ourselves.

How much exercise does a Cocker Spaniel need?

Around an hour a day. The Royal Kennel Club lists up to an hour, and PDSA a minimum of an hour, including off-lead time in a secure area. Battersea adds daily mental stimulation such as scent work and puzzle toys. A Cocker from working lines usually needs more.

Is a Cocker Spaniel a good first dog?

It can be. PDSA says Cockers are a popular choice for first-time owners because of their gentle natures, but need plenty of patience and training. Battersea says they suit an active household ready for daily exercise, training and grooming. Ask the rescue whether this dog would suit a first home.

Are Cocker Spaniels good with children?

It depends on the dog, not the breed. Most of the 20 Cocker Spaniels listed in England today don't say either way, so ask the rescue. Where a profile says nothing, ask the rescue what age of children the dog could live with.

How much does it cost to adopt a Cocker Spaniel in England?

The Cocker Spaniels listed in England today are with Animals In Need Northamptonshire at Wellingborough (6), Aireworth Dogs in Need at Keighley (1), Best Life Dog Rescue at Doncaster (1) and 12 other rescues; each profile shows that rescue's fee. Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

Are there Cocker Spaniel puppies for sale in England?

No. We don't list animals for sale. Every Cocker Spaniel on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. The 20 Cocker Spaniels listed in England today are with Animals In Need Northamptonshire at Wellingborough (6), Aireworth Dogs in Need at Keighley (1), Best Life Dog Rescue at Doncaster (1) and 12 other rescues, and each rescue shows its own fee on the profile. For comparison, Dogs Trust £300, and Blue Cross puppies under six months start from £525. If you searched "cocker spaniel puppies for sale England", the Cocker Spaniels here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Can I get a free Cocker Spaniel to a good home in England, or one under £500?

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Of the 20 Cocker Spaniels listed in England today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; the nearest rescue is Animals In Need Northamptonshire at Wellingborough. Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £300, and Blue Cross from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.

Are there Cocker Spaniel puppies for adoption in England?

Yes: 1 puppy of the 20 listed in England is 12 months or under by their listed age.

Are there older Cocker Spaniels for adoption in England?

Yes: 3 of the 20 listed in England are aged 7 or over by their listed age. Some rescues charge less for older dogs: Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over.
