What Border Collies are like to live with
The Border Collie takes its name from the border regions of England, Scotland and Wales, where it worked sheep in the hills. The Royal Kennel Club calls it a "naturally active and intelligent herding specialist and all-round worker", and says it "needs to be engaged to lead a fulfilled life".
That is the breed in general. A rescue Border Collie is an individual, and many are crosses. The rescue knows how this dog copes at home, on the lead and with visitors, so ask them.
Size and exercise
The Royal Kennel Club lists the Border Collie as medium sized and needing more than two hours of exercise a day. It says a small house is enough, but with a large garden, in town or country. It also notes the breed's success in activities such as obedience and agility.
Grooming
The coat is medium length, sheds, and needs grooming more than once a week.
Health
The Royal Kennel Club asks Border Collie breeders to have hips and elbows scored, to have eyes tested (including gonioscopy), and to have hearing tested. It also asks for DNA tests for Collie eye anomaly (CEA/CH), ceroid lipofuscinosis (CL), Imerslund-Gräsbeck syndrome (IGS), multi-drug resistance (MDR1), trapped neutrophil syndrome (TNS), sensory neuropathy (SN), goniodysgenesis and glaucoma risk (GGD) and Raine's syndrome. It lists the lifespan as over 12 years.
A rescue dog's parents were rarely health tested, so ask the rescue what vet checks the dog has had and whether any condition is known. Your own vet is the right person to advise on anything you notice later.

Are there Border Collies for sale in England?

An animal offered "free to good home" is a private advert, not a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.
