What Whippets are like to live with
The Whippet is a sighthound, a dog that hunts by sight. The Royal Kennel Club describes it as a "small, speedy sighthound traditionally used for racing", and says Whippet racing became popular in the mining areas of the North and Wales, as well as in London and the Midlands. At home it is a different dog: The Royal Kennel Club says that "as a family companion, the Whippet is gentle and affectionate and enjoys the comforts of domestic life".
That is the breed on paper. A rescue Whippet is an individual and may be a cross, and the rescue will know how this particular dog behaves indoors, on the lead and around other animals, so ask them.
Size and exercise
The Royal Kennel Club lists the Whippet as small and needing up to an hour of exercise a day. It suits a small house with a small or medium garden, and it can live in town or country.
Grooming
The coat is short and needs grooming about once a week. It does shed.
Health
The Royal Kennel Club's Whippet page does not list a specific DNA or screening test for breeders, but it notes that the breed has a breed club health scheme. It lists the lifespan as over 12 years.
A rescue dog's parents may not have been health tested, so ask the rescue what vet checks the dog has had and whether any condition is known. Your own vet is the right person to advise on anything you notice later.
