What Beagles are like to live with
The Beagle is a British scenthound. The Royal Kennel Club calls it "the smallest of the British pack hounds", bred to hunt small game and to be followed on foot, and says the breed was established in England by the 15th century. It describes Beagles as "sociable and generally good-tempered, thriving on companionship", and says their friendly nature and manageable size have made them a popular family companion.
That is a picture of the breed, not a promise about one dog. Many Beagles in rescue are crosses, and each has its own history. The rescue knows how this particular dog behaves at home, on the lead and when left alone, so ask them.
Size and exercise
The Royal Kennel Club lists the Beagle as small, needing up to an hour of exercise a day, and suited to a small house with a small or medium garden, in town or country.
It also says the breed "benefits from secure surroundings, as its keen sense of smell may lead it to follow an interesting scent". A garden with secure fencing matters for a scenthound, and the rescue can tell you how this dog behaves off the lead.
Grooming
The coat is short and needs grooming about once a week, though it does shed.
Health
The Royal Kennel Club asks Beagle breeders to DNA test for Lafora's, neonatal cerebellar cortical degeneration (NCCD), Factor 7 deficiency, Imerslund-Gräsbeck syndrome and Musladin-Lueke syndrome. It lists the breed's lifespan as over 12 years.
A rescue dog's parents were rarely health tested, so ask the rescue what vet checks the dog has had and whether any condition is known. Your own vet is the right person to advise on anything you notice later.
