What Staffies are like to live with
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a British breed. The Royal Kennel Club says it was developed in the Black Country of Staffordshire and northern parts of Birmingham, and was recognised in the 1930s. It sums the breed up as "highly intelligent and affectionate especially with children", and says the breed standard notes its intelligence and affinity with children.
That is a description of the breed, not a promise about one dog. A rescue Staffy may have had a hard start, and may be a cross. The rescue will know how this particular dog behaves at home, on the lead and with visitors, so ask them.
Size and exercise
PDSA describes Staffies as stocky and solid dogs. The Royal Kennel Club lists the breed as small, needing up to an hour of exercise a day, and suited to a small house with a small or medium garden, in town or country.
Grooming
The coat is short and needs grooming about once a week, though it does shed.
Health
The Royal Kennel Club asks Staffy breeders to DNA test for hereditary cataracts and L-2-HGA, and to screen elbows and eyes. It lists the breed's lifespan as over 12 years.
A rescue dog's parents may not have been health tested, so ask the rescue what vet checks the dog has had and whether any condition is known. Your own vet is the right person to advise on anything you notice later.
Staffies in UK rescue
Staffies are a common sight in UK rescue. PDSA says "many rehoming centres sadly report that they see more Staffies than any other breed", and the RSPCA says the breed has "suffered a great deal from overbreeding and bad press", with many ending up in its care through irresponsible ownership. It adds that many of the Staffies in its care are well behaved, affectionate and playful.
Children, cats and other dogs
PDSA says Staffies tend to be tolerant and sweet-natured with children, but are very high energy and often don't realise their own strength, so they might not suit families with younger children. Whether a particular rescue dog can live with children, cats or other dogs depends on the dog, so go by the rescue's own assessment, which is often noted on the profile.
Staffies are not a banned breed
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not one of the dog types banned in the UK. The banned types are the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully, and gov.uk says whether a dog is banned "depends on what it looks like, rather than its breed or name".
In Scotland the first XL Bully rules came into force on 23 February 2024 (no selling, advertising, gifting or exchanging, and a lead and muzzle in public), and since 1 August 2024 it has been an offence to own one without an exemption certificate or a pending application. Scottish guidance says it is an offence to sell, give away or rehome an XL Bully, so rescues cannot rehome them, and we never list them.

The Royal Kennel Club describes the breed as "affectionate especially with children", while PDSA notes Staffies are very high energy and might not suit families with younger children. Ask the rescue whether this dog has lived with children and what age of children they would rehome it with; the rescue's assessment of the dog matters more than the breed.
How much does it cost to adopt a Staffy in Glasgow?
Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Battersea charges £230 for a dog over six months and £275 for a puppy under six months, Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
Are there Staffies for sale in Glasgow?
