What Yorkies are like to live with
The Yorkshire Terrier is a toy breed with a working past. The Royal Kennel Club describes it as a "silky toy terrier with roots in the Yorkshire cotton mills", and says it is thought that Scottish workers who came to the mines and mills of Yorkshire brought their terriers with them. It adds that the Yorkie became popular as a house pet but "still retains some of the features of his terrier background".
That is the breed on paper. A rescue Yorkie is an individual, may be a cross, and may be older. The rescue will know how this particular dog behaves at home, on the lead and with visitors, so ask them.
Size and exercise
The Royal Kennel Club lists the Yorkie as small and needing up to 30 minutes of exercise a day. It says the breed can live in a flat, with a small or medium garden, in town or country.
Grooming
The coat is long and silky, and needs grooming every day. The Royal Kennel Club lists the breed as not shedding. It also notes that Yorkies are born black and tan, and the coat changes to steel blue and tan as they mature.
Health
The Royal Kennel Club says the Yorkshire Terrier does not currently have any recommended pre-breeding health screening, though this may change as new evidence comes in. It lists the lifespan as over 12 years.
A rescue dog's parents were rarely health tested, so ask the rescue what vet checks the dog has had and whether any condition is known. Your own vet is the right person to advise on anything you notice later.
