No dog is no maintenance. Every dog needs daily walks, company, training and regular vet care. What varies is the extra work on top: grooming, shedding, how much exercise and stimulation a dog needs, and the running cost that comes with its size. This page gathers the dogs listed with rescues in and around Belfast that do well on those, either because their rescue describes them as low energy or because of their breed.
A short coat usually saves more work than a small body. The Royal Kennel Club suggests grooming a Greyhound or an Italian Greyhound about once a week, and a Maltese every day. Coats sold as non-shedding are often more work, not less: the coat keeps growing and tangles instead of dropping, so you swap hoovering for regular grooming. Bigger is not always harder either. The Greyhound Trust says greyhounds are built for speed, not stamina, and are happy with two twenty-minute walks a day.
Be careful with flat-faced breeds such as French Bulldogs. They can look easy because they manage less exercise, but PDSA lists being unable or unwilling to exercise among the signs of BOAS, a breathing condition common in flat-faced dogs, and The Royal Kennel Club says flat-faced dogs are at high risk of overheating in warm weather, even in the UK. Age matters as much as breed: a settled adult whose rescue knows its habits is usually less work than a puppy of any breed. A breed is only a starting point, so ask the rescue about the individual dog.

No breed is maintenance free, and in rescue the individual dog matters more than its breed. Short-coated breeds with modest exercise needs tend to be the least work. Greyhounds surprise people: Dogs Trust says the short coat generally needs only an occasional brush, and the Greyhound Trust says greyhounds are happy with two twenty-minute walks a day. The rescue or foster home can tell you what a particular dog's coat and energy are really like.
Usually not. Coat-holding breeds such as Poodles, Poodle crosses, Bichons and Shih Tzus do not drop their hair, so the coat keeps growing and mats, which usually means a professional groom every few weeks plus brushing in between. A short-coated dog that sheds is often less work overall. Choose the trade-off you would rather live with: hoovering, or a standing grooming appointment.
Because the breed does well on grooming and size: The Royal Kennel Club says the short coat needs grooming about once a week. Exercise is another matter. Dogs Trust calls Staffies typically high-energy dogs who need lots of exercise, so a Staffy its rescue describes as high energy is not listed here, and any Staffy needs a real daily walk. The same goes for every breed on this page: the rescue's view of the dog comes first.
Often, with one caveat. Lighter grooming and exercise leave more of your time for training and settling in, which is what decides how the first year goes. But low maintenance is not the same as easy to train, and every dog needs training. A calm adult dog whose rescue knows its history is usually the most beginner-friendly choice.

Not here: we only list dogs with rescues, so every low-maintenance dog listed here is adopted for the rescue's fee, which usually covers vet work already done. Whether to buy is your choice. Adopting means the rescue can tell you what it knows about the low-maintenance dog's history and health before you apply. If you decide to buy, The Royal Kennel Club runs a Find a Puppy service, and Dogs Trust's breed guides suggest talking to your vet first: they say some practices offer pre-purchase consultations on likely health conditions and rough costs.
Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Of the 38 low-maintenance dogs listed in and around Belfast today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; the nearest rescue is Friends Of Rescue NI in Belfast. Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £287.50 for a puppy or adult dog. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. In Northern Ireland all dogs must be microchipped at eight weeks old, so ask to see the microchip details (see nidirect).
