Rescue guide
The best dog rescues in Kendal and South Cumbria, compared
Kendal has a dog rescue on its doorstep, a greyhound charity a few miles south and three more rescues within about 25 miles, two of them over the Lancashire border. Here they are side by side, with their fees, how each one decides who adopts, and where the council, Dogs Trust and the RSPCA fit in.

The short answer
The dog rescue at Kendal is Animal Rescue Cumbria, whose shelter is at Grayrigg, just outside the town: it asks £300 for a dog, and you enquire about a particular dog before it invites you to meet. Animal Care Lancaster Morecambe & District, about 20 miles south, asks a minimum donation of £150. For a retired racing greyhound, Retired Greyhounds South Lakes is at Witherslack, about 8 miles away. None of them lets you walk in and choose.
- Rescue adoption fees
- Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
- Animal Rescue Cumbria
- £300 for a dog and £350 for a puppy, not refundable.
- Animal Care Lancaster
- A minimum donation of £150 for a dog, which goes home neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea treated.
- Eden Animal Rescue
- A minimum donation of £250 for a dog, or £380 for two, unless the dog's profile says otherwise; not refundable.
- Retired Greyhounds South Lakes
- A minimum non-refundable donation of £250, with a martingale collar, a lead and a muzzle. Wolfwood publishes no fee.
- Buying a puppy
- Blue Cross puts the cost of buying a puppy at £400 to £3,000, before food, insurance and vet bills.
- Owning a dog
- PDSA puts the minimum lifetime cost of a dog at £6,200 to £18,800, depending on the breed (its 2024 figures, not counting buying the dog).

How each rescue near Kendal works
The rescues work quite differently: Animal Care Lancaster wants several visits in a week, Wolfwood whole days out, and Animal Rescue Cumbria a night to think. Read the section for the rescue whose dog you like before you apply.
Animal Rescue Cumbria (The Wainwright Shelter), Grayrigg
Animal Rescue Cumbria is Kendal's own rescue, a charity that has grown since 1972, on a rural site at Grayrigg. It takes in unwanted and lost cats and dogs, and its dogs are on our Animal Rescue Cumbria page. You can't drop in to look round: its phone lines are open from 12 noon to 3pm, and you meet a dog only by invitation.
Its adoption guide sets out four steps. You send an enquiry about a particular dog, with as much detail as you can, and it contacts you if your home looks a good match. If you rent, it needs a letter from your landlord saying you may keep a dog, and if you have had pets before it may ask your old vet for a reference. Then you meet the dog, walk it round the shelter's field and spend time with it in the dog playground, bringing your own dog along if you have one.
It never lets an animal go home on the first appointment: it asks you to sleep on it, and it may want to meet the whole family or visit your home. Adult dogs are generally neutered first; a puppy goes home under a signed agreement to neuter it later. Every dog has started its vaccinations and is microchipped, and it arranges 4 weeks of free insurance. The fee is £300 for a dog and £350 for a puppy, and it is not refundable.
Retired Greyhounds South Lakes, Witherslack
Retired Greyhounds South Lakes has rehomed ex-racing greyhounds since 2004 from Beech Hill House in Witherslack, between Grange-over-Sands and Kendal. It has no kennels: the dogs live in the founders' home, and it is run by volunteers with no paid staff. Its own history says it left the Greyhound Trust in June 2020 to become independent. Its dogs are not on our pages yet, so look on its own site.
To adopt, fill in its enquiry form and phone for an appointment to meet the dogs; it is closed on Tuesdays. Once you are sure a greyhound is for you, you send photos of your garden boundaries before the visit to choose. It asks a minimum non-refundable donation of £250, and each dog goes home with a martingale collar, a lead, a plastic box muzzle and 5 weeks of free insurance. On cats, it says it has homed many ex-racing greyhounds with cats: what matters is the dog's temperament, not whether it raced.
Animal Care Lancaster Morecambe & District, Scotforth
Over the Lancashire border, about 20 miles south, Animal Care Lancaster Morecambe & District has been a charity since 1978 and rehomes dogs, cats, rabbits and other small animals from Blea Tarn Road, Scotforth. It runs on appointments only, and its dogs are on our Animal Care Lancaster page.
You apply on its form and wait for its animal manager to call; if you haven't heard within 7 days, the application hasn't succeeded this time. A successful application earns an appointment to meet the dogs, and you can reserve one there. A home checker then visits to make sure your garden is secure for that dog. It asks you to visit the dog 3 times within 5 to 7 days, so check you can make the drive, then you take the dog home for a week's trial and adopt at the end of it.
The minimum donation is £150, and Animal Care Lancaster keeps ownership: if you can't keep the dog, it goes back by prior arrangement, or to a new home Animal Care Lancaster has vetted.
Wolfwood, Ellel
Wolfwood is a small wildlife and dog rescue at Ellel, south of Lancaster and about 23 miles from Kendal. It says many of its dogs were abandoned to the stray system, and they live in privately owned kennels, so viewing is by appointment only. You phone to meet a dog and chat to a member of staff, then spend three separate full days out with the dog before you adopt. Its dogs are on our Wolfwood page.
Its conditions are clear. It won't rehome to someone out at work full time unless the dog can go too or gets regular breaks, gardens must be secure because many dogs can jump 1.5 metres, children must be old enough to understand basic do's and don'ts, and you need time for one to three hours of exercise a day. It publishes no fee, so ask when you call.
Eden Animal Rescue, near Penrith
Eden Animal Rescue has cared for animals since 1995 at Moorlands Head Farm, near Temple Sowerby, about 23 miles north of Kendal, and it never puts a healthy animal to sleep. It does not rehome animals outside Cumbria, so it suits Kendal and Barrow homes but not Lancashire ones. Its dogs are on our Eden Animal Rescue page.
It says it finds homes for its animals rather than animals for homes. You request or download its questionnaire and send it back with photos of your home, garden and fencing; renters need written permission from the landlord. If a dog suits you, you meet and walk it over a set period, bring any dog you have to meet it, and it visits your home before deciding. The minimum donation is £250 for a dog, or £380 for two, unless the profile says otherwise.
How to choose between them
Start with the dog, not the rescue: our Kendal dogs page lists the dogs at Animal Rescue Cumbria, Animal Care Lancaster, Wolfwood and Eden in one place, so filter by size, age or breed and see who has it. Then weigh these five things:
- Distance. Animal Care Lancaster asks for 3 visits within a week and Wolfwood for three full days out, so the 20 to 23 mile drive happens several times. Animal Rescue Cumbria is the nearest for Kendal homes.
- Where you live. Eden Animal Rescue rehomes only within Cumbria. The Lancashire rescues have no such rule, but each one checks your home or garden.
- Work. Wolfwood will not rehome to someone out at work full time unless the dog can go too or have regular breaks. Ask the others how long the dog you like can be left.
- Children and other pets. None publishes a blanket age rule except Wolfwood's "old enough to understand" line; each dog's profile says what it can live with. Animal Rescue Cumbria and Eden both want to meet your own dog.
- The fee. £150 minimum at Animal Care Lancaster, £250 minimum at Eden and Retired Greyhounds South Lakes, £300 at Animal Rescue Cumbria. Each goes towards vet work already done.
Barrow-in-Furness and the Furness peninsula
When we checked on 2 November 2026, none of the rescues we list had dogs in Barrow itself: Animal Welfare (Furness) there rehomes cats only. Our Barrow-in-Furness dogs page shows Kendal's whole list, measured from Barrow, and Eden Animal Rescue's Cumbria-only rule includes Furness homes.
Barrow's stray dogs go to the Borough Stray Dog Kennels at North Scale, where viewing is by appointment. Owners pay from £48 for one day to £168 for seven to reclaim a dog, and in England any stray you find is reported to the local council.
Is there a dog pound in Kendal?
Not one you can visit to choose a dog. Westmorland and Furness Council's stray dog page for the South Lakeland area says strays are collected in office hours and either returned or taken to its contracted kennels. Owners pay from £79 on the first day to £166.60 by the seventh, and every dog unclaimed after seven days becomes the council's property and is rehomed where possible, microchipped, vaccinated and neutered after a home check. Animal Rescue Cumbria can't take a found dog, so call the council.
People also search for Dogs Trust Cumbria, which has no centre to visit: its dogs live in foster homes across the county and it sees adopters by pre-arranged appointment. The RSPCA Westmorland Branch in Kendal rehomes cats and kittens and says it can't help with dogs at the moment. We don't list Dogs Trust or RSPCA animals, so search their own sites.
What dogs come into rescue around Kendal
On 2 November 2026 the dogs listed with us around Kendal were a broad mix: lurchers and lurcher crosses, Border Collies and collie crosses, Staffy crosses, a few French Bulldogs, Patterdale Terriers and some bigger dogs such as an Akita and a husky. Most were adults; our rescue puppies guide explains why young puppies are rare, and our Border Collie guide covers the collies.
Wolfwood says many of its dogs come through the stray system, and Animal Rescue Cumbria takes in unwanted and lost dogs from the area. The live count on our Kendal dogs page is always the current picture.
The law in England
Microchipping and change of keeper
In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
Lucy's Law: buying a puppy
In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
Banned dog types
In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
XL Bully dogs
In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).
