How each cat rescue near Kendal works
All five ask you to apply first and meet the cat later. The differences are in the checks and in where the cats live.
Animal Rescue Cumbria, Grayrigg
Kendal's own rescue takes in unwanted and lost cats and dogs at its shelter at Grayrigg. Its cats are on our Animal Rescue Cumbria page. Its adoption guide asks you to send an enquiry about a particular cat; if your home looks a good match it invites you to spend time with the cat in its cat rehoming room. Renters need a letter from the landlord, and it may ask your old vet for a reference.
It never lets a cat go home on the first appointment. Adult cats are always neutered, tested for FeLV and FIV, microchipped and started on their vaccinations, and you get 4 weeks of free insurance. Keep a new cat in for 4 to 6 weeks, and a kitten in until it has been neutered. Any cats you already have should be neutered and fully vaccinated. The fee is £150 for a cat and £100 for a kitten, not refundable.
Animal Care Lancaster Morecambe & District, Scotforth
About 20 miles south over the Lancashire border, Animal Care Lancaster Morecambe & District rehomes dogs, cats and small animals, and says it is always full. Its cats are on our Animal Care Lancaster page.
You apply on its form and wait to be invited to an appointment, where you can reserve a cat. A home checker then visits to make sure your house is right for that cat. Each cat goes home neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea treated, for a minimum donation of £75, and it must be kept as a pet, never outside. Animal Care Lancaster keeps ownership, so a cat you can't keep goes back to it by prior arrangement, or to a new home it has vetted.
Eden Animal Rescue, near Penrith
Eden Animal Rescue has cared for animals since 1995 at a farm near Temple Sowerby, about 23 miles north of Kendal, and it had several kitten litters listed on 2 November 2026. It rehomes only within Cumbria. Its cats are on our Eden Animal Rescue page.
Request or download its questionnaire and send it back with photos of your home and garden, including where the cat will sleep and eat; renters need the landlord's written permission. A member of the team then contacts you about suitable matches. The minimum donation is £110 for a cat or kitten and £180 for a pair, and cats go home neutered unless too young, vaccinated and microchipped.
Animal Welfare (Furness), Barrow-in-Furness
Working in its community since 1985, Animal Welfare (Furness) runs a cattery on Rawlinson Street in Barrow and rehomes cats and kittens. Its cats are on our Animal Welfare (Furness) page.
Fill in its adoption form for the cat you like; it asks for photos of your living area, kitchen and outside space instead of a home visit, and proof of permission if you rent. You must be 18 or over, and it does not rehome to families with children under 5. Its minimum donation is £100 for a cat and £150 for a kitten, not refundable, covering vet checks, microchipping, neutering, vaccinations and an FIV and FeLV test. On 2 November 2026 its pair listings gave £280 for a pair.
Bentham & District Pet Rescue, High Bentham
A small charity on the borders of North Yorkshire, south Cumbria and north Lancashire, Bentham & District Pet Rescue has rehomed cats since 1997 and keeps them in volunteers' foster homes, and it helps pets from Bentham and the area around it. Its cats are not on our pages yet, so look on its own site.
You send an enquiry, it carries out a home check, in person or online, and then you meet the cat at its foster home; the fosterer may arrange for you to collect it a few days later. It asks £100 per pet, and about £150 to £200 for a pedigree cat, to reduce the risk of the cat being sold on. A cat you can't keep must go back to it.
How to choose between them
Start with the cat: our Kendal cats page lists every cat with the four rescues we list. Then weigh these:
- Children. Animal Welfare (Furness) does not rehome to families with children under 5. The others decide cat by cat, so read each profile.
- Where you live. Eden Animal Rescue rehomes only within Cumbria, and Bentham & District Pet Rescue mainly helps Bentham and its surroundings.
- Checks. Animal Care Lancaster sends a home checker; Animal Welfare (Furness) asks for photos; Animal Rescue Cumbria may visit your home and always wants a second meeting.
- Kittens. All four rescues we list had kittens on 2 November 2026; Animal Rescue Cumbria's kitten fee is the lowest, at £100.
- The fee. From a £75 minimum at Animal Care Lancaster to £150 at Animal Rescue Cumbria for an adult cat.
Kittens around Kendal and Barrow
Kittens were listed at every rescue we list near Kendal when we checked on 2 November 2026: litters at Animal Rescue Cumbria and Eden Animal Rescue, kittens at Animal Care Lancaster, and a pair at Animal Welfare (Furness). Our Kendal kittens page lists every one live.
Animal Rescue Cumbria asks that a kitten is kept indoors until it has been neutered, and Bentham & District Pet Rescue advises that cats under a year old are not let out at night.
If you searched "kittens for sale" in Cumbria or Barrow
Rescue kittens are adopted, not sold: you pay the rescue its fee, and the kitten comes vaccinated, microchipped and neutered or with neutering arranged. Bentham & District Pet Rescue says it does not sell cats, and asks its fee partly so a cat is not sold on for profit.
If you buy a kitten instead, in England it must be microchipped before it is 20 weeks old. Meet the kitten with its mother at home, never pay a deposit for one you haven't seen, and report a suspected scam advert to Report Fraud.
The RSPCA and Cats Protection around Kendal
The RSPCA Westmorland Branch, an independent, self-funding branch based in Kendal, rehomes cats and kittens from a cattery near its office on Beezon Fields, which opened in June 2026. The RSPCA Furness & Barrow Branch rescues and rehomes cats across Furness and Barrow. We don't list RSPCA animals, so look on their own sites and apply to them directly.
Cats Protection's own branch finder shows no branch covering Kendal or Barrow at the moment, so the local cat charities above are the main routes.
The law in England
Microchipping cats
In England, cats must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks old and registered on a database, a rule in force since 10 June 2024. An owner found without one has 21 days to comply or may be fined up to £500. Free-living cats (farm, feral and community cats) are exempt.
Lucy's Law: buying a kitten
In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that kittens under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
