Where Exeter's rescue kittens come from

Most cats listed with us near Exeter are at Animals in Distress (Torbay & Westcountry), whose cattery is at Ipplepen, just outside Newton Abbot. ARC Animal Rescue Centre near Ottery St Mary rehomes cats and kittens as well, and prices each one individually.

Cats Protection's East Devon branch, run by volunteers, rehomes kittens too; we don't list its cats, so search its own site.

No waiting list: apply for the kitten you see

Animals in Distress (Torbay & Westcountry) no longer keeps a kitten waiting list. Every kitten goes on its cats page; you apply for a particular one with "Apply to rehome me", and it picks the most suitable home from the applications. It always has more applicants than kittens, so being flexible helps.

What a rescue kitten costs around Exeter

Animals in Distress asks £300 for a kitten under 6 months, or £550 for two, and ARC a minimum donation of £175 for a kitten that is microchipped, neutered or vaccinated. Cats Protection's East Devon branch asks £100 for a kitten under 6 months.

If you have been searching "kittens for sale Exeter", a rescue kitten is adopted, not sold: you pay the rescue its fee, which covers vet work such as vaccination and a microchip, and neutering or a plan for it. Report a pet advert that asks for money before you have met the kitten to Report Fraud.

Each rescue sets its own fee. Cats Protection says you can expect to pay £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten, varying between its branches, and Blue Cross kittens up to 16 weeks start from £175. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

The law in England

  • Microchipping cats. In England, cats must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks old and registered on a database, a rule in force since 10 June 2024. An owner found without one has 21 days to comply or may be fined up to £500. Free-living cats (farm, feral and community cats) are exempt.
  • Lucy's Law: buying a kitten. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that kittens under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

How many kittens are available for adoption in Exeter?

As of 8 November 2026, no kittens are listed for adoption in and around Exeter on LocalPetFinder. Rescues add animals all the time, so this page fills as they list them.

Can rescues rehome kittens under six months?

Yes. Lucy's Law stops third-party sales, not rescues. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that kittens under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Do kittens need to be microchipped?

Yes, in England. Since 10 June 2024 cats must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks old and registered on a database. Check the kitten's profile or ask the rescue whether it has been chipped.

Are rescue kittens vaccinated and neutered when I adopt them?

At the large charities, the fee pays for that vet work. Cats Protection says its cats are vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated and neutered (or come with a neutering voucher if they are young kittens), with a vet health check and four weeks' free insurance. Smaller rescues set their own terms, so ask what a particular kitten has had and whether a vaccination or neutering is still due.

Can I adopt two kittens together in Exeter?

No kittens are listed in and around Exeter today. When they are, you can ask a rescue whether two could go home with you. Blue Cross fees for a pair of kittens start from £275. Cats their rescue lists as a bonded pair are on our bonded cats page.

How much does it cost to adopt a kitten in Exeter?

Each rescue sets its own fee. Cats Protection says you can expect to pay £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten, varying between its branches, and Blue Cross kittens up to 16 weeks start from £175. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

Are there kittens for sale in Exeter?

No. We don't list animals for sale. Every kitten on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. Rescues rehome animals rather than selling them, usually for an adoption fee: for example, Cats Protection says £100 to £120 for a kitten on average. The fee usually goes towards vet work already done, such as neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that kittens under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Where can I buy a kitten in Exeter, and should I?

Not here: we only list cats with rescues, so every kitten listed here is adopted for the rescue's fee, which usually covers vet work already done. Whether to buy is your choice. Adopting means the rescue can tell you what it knows about the kitten's history and health before you apply. If you decide to buy a pedigree kitten, Cats Protection suggests a breeder registered with a breed association such as the GCCF, and seeing the kitten with its mother at home rather than buying from a video or social media advert.

Can I get a free kitten to a good home in Exeter, or one under £100?

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. At the large cat charities, fees for one cat are under £200: Cats Protection says £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten, and Blue Cross fees start from £150 for cats aged 4 months to 7 years. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. In England, cats must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks old, so ask to see the microchip details.

Is there a kitten rescue near me in Exeter?

This page lists every kitten with the rescues we list in Exeter and within about 25 miles of it, Exeter first and then nearest first, each with its town and distance. You can also see kittens across England. To see what is closest to you, search by postcode with the pet finder on our home page. To hear when one is listed, set up an email alert on this page.
