How each rescue near Carlisle works

The rescues differ more than their fees suggest: one is a working rescue centre on a farm, one a sanctuary that rehomes a handful of dogs, and one moves quickly once you apply.

Oak Tree Animals' Charity, Wetheral Shields

Oak Tree Animals' Charity is at Oak Tree Farm, Wetheral Shields, about 4 miles east of the city centre, and rehomes dogs, cats and equines. Its dogs are on our Oak Tree page. Since 9 July 2026 the Wetheral site, tearoom included, has been closed to general visitors while flood damage to its drains is repaired, but adoptions and viewings carry on by appointment.

When you see a dog you like, you fill in a questionnaire, and it aims to get back to you within 72 hours. It visits your home only if the dog or your home has unusual requirements, sometimes bringing the dog along, and in some cases you can reserve a dog the same day. If you live further away, it asks you to say so early, as it can sometimes shortcut the process or deliver the dog.

Every animal is flea treated, wormed, microchipped, vaccinated, neutered where appropriate and checked by a vet, and any dog that needs it has been seen by a behaviourist. Oak Tree says it will always take an animal back if things don't work out.

Penny Jones Animal Hospice, Hethersgill

Penny Jones Animal Hospice is a sanctuary at Hethersgill, about 8.5 miles north east of Carlisle, that rescues abused and neglected animals. It says it was set up as a sanctuary, not a rehoming centre, but often has a small number of dogs looking for homes, and its dogs are on our Penny Jones page.

Many of its dogs arrive from abroad as well as from the UK, and many are in their older years; all its imported dogs are tested for foreign diseases, Brucella canis included. When we checked on 2 November 2026 the dogs it listed with us were aged 5 to 9. It welcomes older adopters and people with disabilities, whom it says other charities often turn away.

If you match a dog, you are invited to meet it at the sanctuary by appointment, with any dog you already have, and it arranges a home check. The whole process can take up to three weeks. As a rule it doesn't rehome to homes with young children or outside its area, and its dogs aren't cat tested unless it says so.

Eden Animal Rescue, near Penrith

Eden Animal Rescue has cared for animals since 1995 and never puts a healthy animal to sleep. Its centre is at Moorlands Head Farm, outside Newbiggin near Temple Sowerby, east of Penrith and about 17 miles from Carlisle, and its dogs are on our Eden page. It rehomes only within Cumbria, so Carlisle adopters qualify.

It finds homes for its animals rather than animals for homes. You request or download its questionnaire and send it back with photos of your garden and fencing, where the dog would sleep and where it would eat, plus your landlord's written permission if you rent. Then you meet and walk the dog over a set period, bring any dog you already have to the farm, and Eden meets the whole family and visits your home before it decides. It follows up after the dog has gone home.

Appointments run from 11am to 3pm daily, depending on volunteers, so call before you travel.

Silver Fox Dog Rescue

Silver Fox Dog Rescue cares for its dogs in foster homes around the UK, and lists with us only the dogs whose foster town it states, sometimes Carlisle. Its adoption donation is £400, £500 for young pups, and a £50 deposit reserves a dog once you are a full match; the deposit is refunded only if the home check fails. It doesn't work on first come, first served.

Alfie's Dream For Greyhounds, near Lockerbie

Across the border in Scotland, Alfie's Dream For Greyhounds has its kennels near Lockerbie, about 23 miles from Carlisle, and says it rehomes in Cumbria, Lancashire and the midlands of Scotland. Every dog is vaccinated, wormed, flea treated, neutered and given a dental before it goes home, and adopters get a helpline for as long as they need it. It publishes no fee or process, so contact the charity, and see its dogs for adoption. Our Carlisle greyhound guide covers it in detail.

How to choose between them

Start with the dog, not the rescue: our Carlisle dogs page lists the dogs at every rescue above that lists with us, so filter by size, age or breed and see who has it. Then weigh these five things:

  • Children. Penny Jones Animal Hospice generally doesn't rehome to homes with young children. Eden asks the ages of your children and of any who visit, and Oak Tree judges each dog. Ask about the dog you like.
  • Where you live. Eden rehomes only within Cumbria and Penny Jones generally only in its own area. Oak Tree asks adopters further away to talk to it first about transport.
  • Your other dog. Eden and Penny Jones both want your dog to meet theirs before anything is agreed, and Eden won't place a dog where it would upset another pet.
  • How fast you want to move. Oak Tree aims to reply within 72 hours and can reserve a dog the same day; Penny Jones can take up to three weeks; Eden walks you and the dog together over a set period.
  • The fee. Penny Jones asks a minimum £100, Eden a minimum £250 and Oak Tree £275, or £300 for a puppy. Silver Fox's donation is £400.

Dogs Trust Cumbria and the rescues over the border

Many people in Cumbria look for Dogs Trust first. Dogs Trust Cumbria is a foster-based centre: its dogs live in foster homes across the county until they are adopted, so there is no centre to visit. You apply online and, if there is a match, it arranges an appointment to meet the dog. We don't list Dogs Trust dogs, so search its own site.

Just beyond our 25 miles, in Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway Canine Rescue Centre at Glencaple, near Dumfries, about 26 miles away, asks you to register with its home finder form, meet the dog at the centre, ideally twice, and pass a home check; its minimum donation is £220. Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue has no kennels of its own and rehomes greyhounds in Dumfriesshire and Cumbria; its FAQ puts its donation at around £150. Both are Scottish charities with their own processes, so read each one's pages before you apply.

Is there a dog pound in Carlisle?

Not one you can visit to choose a dog. In England a stray is reported to the council, and for the Carlisle area that is Cumberland Council, which collects strays and agrees its fee with the owner over the phone. It doesn't name a rescue that rehomes unclaimed dogs, and Oak Tree Animals' Charity has not taken in strays since March 2015.

Around Penrith, Westmorland and Furness Council takes strays to a registered kennel, gives owners seven days to claim them, and passes unclaimed dogs to a dog rehoming organisation. Our Penrith dogs page lists Eden's dogs first.

What dogs come into rescue around Carlisle

Mostly adults, and many older dogs. When we checked on 2 November 2026 the dogs listed with us near Carlisle were mainly crossbreeds, with Patterdale Terriers, lurchers and a few small breeds such as Chihuahuas and a Shih Tzu, and many were 7 or older. That suits adopters who want a calmer dog whose character the rescue already knows. Our older dogs page shows them live.

Penny Jones takes in dogs from Romanian shelters as well as from the UK, and its write-ups say how each has settled. Puppies are rare: on 2 November 2026 the youngest dog listed near Carlisle was 8 months old. Our Carlisle dogs page is always the current picture, and our greyhound guide covers the sighthounds.

The law in England

Microchipping and change of keeper

In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.

Lucy's Law: buying a puppy

In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Banned dog types

In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.

XL Bully dogs

In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).
