Where to find a rescue kitten in Middlesbrough

The count under the short answer is live, and our Middlesbrough kittens page links each kitten to its rescue. If the list is short, check back, or ask the rescues to tell you when kittens are ready.

Pawsitive Cattitudes Rescue

Based at Eaglescliffe, with its cats in foster homes, covering Stockton, Yarm, Middlesbrough and Teesside. It counts kittens as up to 24 weeks old, and you meet them at the foster home you visit, which shows you how a kitten behaves in a real house. Some of its cats are not yet on its website, so ask. Its rescue space page says it accepts applications for pregnant cats, cats with kittens and kittens without mothers, though applying is not guaranteed, as space is limited.

S.A.R.A. and Care4Cats Rescue

S.A.R.A. at Redcar, about 7 miles away, starts with a visit to its cattery, then a home check and a one-week trial. Care4Cats Rescue at Loftus, about 14 miles away, starts with an application form, then a home check and a visit to meet the kittens; there are no same-day adoptions. Our guide to Middlesbrough cat rescues compares every cat rescue we list, and Cats Protection's Teesside branch rehomes kittens too.

Kittens in pairs, and the home check

Care4Cats Rescue says: "We have a policy of adopting kittens in pairs, as kittens need interaction with other kittens for healthy social development." It asks that young kittens go in pairs unless you have an existing kitten or young cat at home, so if you want a single kitten, say so before you apply; an older cat may suit you better. S.A.R.A.'s £200 pair fee makes two cats cheaper each than one.

Expect a home check. Care4Cats Rescue asks to see ID and, if you rent, proof that pets are allowed; S.A.R.A. does a home check before its one-week trial.

What a rescue kitten costs, and what the fee covers

At S.A.R.A. every cat is vaccinated, microchipped, treated for fleas and worms, tested for FIV and FeLV and neutered unless there is a medical reason not to, for £150. Care4Cats Rescue neuters, microchips, vaccinates and treats every cat for parasites, snap tests for FIV and FeLV, and offers 5 weeks' free Agria insurance.

A kitten bought from an advert may come with none of that done, so neutering, a full course of vaccinations and the microchip are extra bills on top of the price.

Vaccinations, neutering and time indoors

Ask the rescue what has been done and what you agree to do. This is what the rescues around Middlesbrough say on their own pages:

  • Vaccinated and neutered. S.A.R.A. and Care4Cats Rescue both vaccinate, microchip and neuter before adoption. A kitten too young to be neutered may need it done later, so ask. In England the law also requires a cat to be microchipped before it is 20 weeks old (see the law section below).
  • Indoors at first. Care4Cats Rescue recommends keeping a new cat inside for at least two weeks, and says kittens are not sensible enough to be let outside until one year old (if unsupervised); before then, supervised trips into a secure garden or on a harness are an option.

If you've been searching "kittens for sale Middlesbrough"

Rescue kittens are adopted, not sold: you apply, the rescue matches you, and you pay its adoption fee or donation. Every kitten on our Middlesbrough kittens page is adopted that way. The same goes for "free kittens": a rescue asks a fee towards vet work, and a "free to good home" advert has no rescue behind it.

If you decide to buy a pedigree, Cats Protection suggests a breeder registered with a breed association such as the GCCF, and seeing the kitten with its mother at home. If an advert looks like a scam, report it to Report Fraud, which replaced Action Fraud.

The law in England

Microchipping cats

In England, cats must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks old and registered on a database, a rule in force since 10 June 2024. An owner found without one has 21 days to comply or may be fined up to £500. Free-living cats (farm, feral and community cats) are exempt.

Lucy's Law: buying a kitten

In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that kittens under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Questions

Where can I adopt a rescue kitten near Middlesbrough?

Pawsitive Cattitudes Rescue, based at Eaglescliffe with its cats in foster homes, had most of the kittens listed with us when we checked on 29 October 2026. S.A.R.A. at Redcar and Care4Cats Rescue at Loftus rehome kittens too, and Cats Protection Teesside covers TS postcodes.

How much does a rescue kitten cost near Middlesbrough?

S.A.R.A. asks £150 a cat or £200 a pair. Care4Cats Rescue takes a reservation of at least £40 a cat towards a fee that varies with age and breed. Pawsitive Cattitudes Rescue publishes no fee, so ask when you apply.

Can I get a kitten for free near Middlesbrough?

Not from a rescue: they ask an adoption fee or donation towards vaccinations, neutering and a microchip. A "free kitten" in a private advert has no rescue checks behind it, so see it with its mother at home and never pay a deposit before you have met it.

Can I adopt just one kitten?

Not from Care4Cats Rescue, unless you already have a kitten or young cat at home: it rehomes young kittens in pairs so they grow up with another kitten. Ask the other rescues; if one kitten is all you can take, an older cat may be the better match.

Will a rescue kitten be neutered and vaccinated?

S.A.R.A. and Care4Cats Rescue vaccinate, microchip and neuter their cats before adoption, unless a kitten is too young or there is a medical reason. Ask the rescue what has been done and what is left for you.

How long should I keep a new kitten indoors?

Care4Cats Rescue recommends at least two weeks inside for a new cat, and says kittens are not sensible enough to be let outside unsupervised until one year old. Ask your rescue for its own advice, and make sure the kitten is microchipped and neutered before it goes out.
