Which Middlesbrough cat rescue for which cat

The table is in rough order of distance. Here is how each one works.

Pawsitive Cattitudes Rescue

A foster-based cat charity, based at Eaglescliffe, whose site covers Stockton, Yarm, Middlesbrough and Teesside. You meet the cats at the foster home you visit, and it says some of its cats are not yet on its website, so ask about any you haven't seen. It has no upper age limit for adopters and, in its own words, prioritises applications from neurodivergent individuals. Its how we work page explains its foster model. It publishes no fee, so ask when you apply.

S.A.R.A. The Ann Prosser Foundation, Redcar

About 7 miles from Middlesbrough, open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm. S.A.R.A. says every cat it rehomes has been assessed, examined by a vet, vaccinated, microchipped, treated for fleas and worms and neutered unless there is a medical reason not to, and tested for FIV and FeLV; older cats are blood tested. Its adoption process is a visit to the cattery, a home check and a one-week trial. It does not rehome outdoor cats to homes in high-traffic areas, and says a cat that likes to go outside must stay in for at least nine weeks in its new home. The fee is £150 a cat or £200 a pair.

Care4Cats Rescue, Loftus

About 14 miles from Middlesbrough. Care4Cats Rescue starts with an application form, then a home check (bring ID; if you rent, show that pets are allowed), then a visit to meet the cat; only people go, though well-behaved children are welcome. There are "No same day adoptions". You reserve a cat with at least £40, which comes off the fee on adoption day; the fee itself varies with age and breed, and donations are not refundable. Every cat is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, treated for parasites and snap tested for FIV and FeLV, with 5 weeks' free Agria insurance offered. Young kittens go in pairs unless you already have a kitten or young cat at home, and an outdoor cat won't be rehomed as an indoor one except in very special circumstances. Phone 01287 349701, Monday to Friday from 1 to 4pm, or see its homepage.

Further out: Coxhoe and Wearside

Durham Dogs & Cats Home at Coxhoe, about 14 miles away, asks a £200 donation; you register with photo ID and proof of address and adopt by appointment. On Wearside, about 23 miles away, Pawz for Thought neuters, microchips and vaccinates every cat for a minimum donation of £125, and Animal Krackers asks £100 for a kitten or adult cat.

How to choose a cat rescue near Middlesbrough

Start with the cat: our Middlesbrough page lists every cat with each rescue, so filter by age or colour and see who has it. Then check these on the rescue's own page:

  • Indoors or out. S.A.R.A. keeps outdoor cats away from high-traffic homes, and Care4Cats Rescue will not rehome an outdoor cat as an indoor one except in very special circumstances, so say where you live and whether the cat can go out.
  • Kittens. Care4Cats Rescue rehomes young kittens in pairs unless you already have a kitten or young cat; ask the others whether a single kitten would suit your home.
  • The fee. S.A.R.A. publishes one, Care4Cats Rescue a reservation, and Pawsitive Cattitudes Rescue none; ask what it covers.
  • Time. Care4Cats Rescue has no same-day adoptions, and S.A.R.A. includes a one-week trial, so plan for more than one visit.

Cats Protection Teesside

Cats Protection's Teesside branch is volunteer-run and covers postcodes TS1 to TS29, which takes in Middlesbrough. We don't list its cats, so search for the Teesside branch on Cats Protection's own site.

The law in England

Microchipping cats

In England, cats must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks old and registered on a database, a rule in force since 10 June 2024. An owner found without one has 21 days to comply or may be fined up to £500. Free-living cats (farm, feral and community cats) are exempt.

Lucy's Law: buying a kitten

In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that kittens under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
