Which Newcastle cat rescue for which cat

The table is in rough order of distance. Here is how each one works.

Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter, Longbenton

About 3 miles from the city centre. You apply with the form attached to a cat's listing; its rehoming team contacts the person it thinks suits the cat best and invites you in to meet it, and you can apply again as often as you like. Visits are by appointment once an application succeeds (FAQs).

Pawz for Thought, Sunderland

Pawz for Thought works mainly in Newcastle, Sunderland and the counties of Northumberland, Durham and Tyne and Wear. Every animal is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and treated for fleas and worms before adoption, and its process runs from a questionnaire and phone call to a home visit and meeting the cat. It won't rehome to anyone under 18.

Animal Krackers, Sunderland

Animal Krackers keeps its cats at Ferry Farm on Offerton Lane, open 10am to 4pm every day; bring photo ID and two proofs of address when you visit. After an enquiry you book a 30 minute viewing, and a home visit follows. Adult cats leave neutered, vaccinated and microchipped; kittens come with their first year of vaccinations and a neutering voucher.

Minnie's Haven Cat Rescue

A volunteer-run rescue whose foster carers socialise its cats, rehoming across the North East. Its adoption page describes a form, a short checklist and a home visit, and it can't accept applications where anyone smokes inside the home.

Bryson's Animal Shelter and Durham Dogs & Cats Home

Bryson's Animal Shelter at Eighton Banks, Gateshead, rehomes cats alongside dogs and small animals; contact it about a cat you have seen. Durham Dogs & Cats Home at Coxhoe asks you to register with photo ID, proof of address and photos of your home, holds a reserved cat for up to 48 hours, and asks a £200 donation.

How to choose a cat rescue near Newcastle

Start with the cat: our Newcastle cats page lists every cat with each rescue. Then check on the rescue's own page:

  • Home visits. Pawz for Thought, Animal Krackers and Minnie's Haven all visit before a cat goes.
  • Your household. Minnie's Haven won't rehome where anyone smokes indoors; Pawz for Thought won't rehome to under 18s.
  • Pairs. Some rescues list cats as pairs to be rehomed together; ask whether a single cat suits your home.
  • The fee. Three rescues publish one (see above). Ask the others.

The law in England

Microchipping cats

In England, cats must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks old and registered on a database, a rule in force since 10 June 2024. An owner found without one has 21 days to comply or may be fined up to £500. Free-living cats (farm, feral and community cats) are exempt.

Lucy's Law: buying a kitten

In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that kittens under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
