What Staffies are like to live with

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a British breed. The Royal Kennel Club says it was developed in the Black Country of Staffordshire and northern parts of Birmingham, and was recognised in the 1930s. It sums the breed up as "highly intelligent and affectionate especially with children", and says the breed standard notes its intelligence and affinity with children.

The rescues mark 1 as able to live with children, 1 with cats and 1 with other dogs. Where a profile says nothing, it doesn't mean no: ask the rescue.

Breed descriptions are general. Every rescue animal is an individual, so the rescue's own assessment of the animal comes first.

How many rescue Staffies are available for adoption in Dorset?

As of 8 November 2026, 4 Staffies are listed for adoption in and around Dorset on LocalPetFinder, from Waggy Tails Rescue, Margaret Green Animal Rescue (Lincoln Farm) and Staffie & Stray Rescue. That is 2 in Dorset itself and 2 with rescues within about 25 miles, each shown with its town and distance. Each profile links to the rescue, and you apply to adopt with them directly.

Which rescues near Dorset have Staffies right now, and how old are they?

As of 8 November 2026, Waggy Tails Rescue (at Canford Magna, about 11 miles away): 2, Margaret Green Animal Rescue (Lincoln Farm) (at Winterborne Kingston): 1 and Staffie & Stray Rescue (at Ferndown): 1. By age, that is 2 puppies, 1 adult dog and 1 older dog. The newest was added on 7 November 2026. Each profile links to the rescue, which handles the adoption.

Where can I adopt a Staffy in Dorset?

With the rescue that has the dog. Today the Staffies on this page are with Waggy Tails Rescue (2), Margaret Green Animal Rescue (Lincoln Farm) (1) and Staffie & Stray Rescue (1). Open a profile and apply to that rescue: each one runs its own application, home check and adoption fee. We don't rehome animals ourselves.

Are Staffies a banned breed in the UK?

No. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type. The banned types are the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully, and gov.uk says a dog's type is judged on what it looks like rather than its breed or name. Rescues cannot rehome a banned type, so none are listed on LocalPetFinder.

Are Staffies good with children?

Often, but not always. The Royal Kennel Club describes the breed as "affectionate especially with children", while PDSA notes Staffies are very high energy and might not suit families with younger children. Ask the rescue whether this dog has lived with children and what age of children they would rehome it with; the rescue's assessment of the dog matters more than the breed.

How much does it cost to adopt a Staffy in Dorset?

The Staffies listed in and around Dorset today are with Waggy Tails Rescue at Canford Magna, about 11 miles away (2), Margaret Green Animal Rescue (Lincoln Farm) at Winterborne Kingston (1) and Staffie & Stray Rescue at Ferndown (1); each profile shows that rescue's fee. Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

Are there Staffy puppies for sale in Dorset?

No. We don't list animals for sale. Every Staffy on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. The 4 Staffies listed in and around Dorset today are with Waggy Tails Rescue at Canford Magna, about 11 miles away (2), Margaret Green Animal Rescue (Lincoln Farm) at Winterborne Kingston (1) and Staffie & Stray Rescue at Ferndown (1), and each rescue shows its own fee on the profile. For comparison, Dogs Trust £300, and Blue Cross puppies under six months start from £525. If you searched "staffy puppies for sale Dorset", the Staffies here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Can I get a free Staffy to a good home in Dorset, or one under £500?

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Of the 4 Staffies listed in and around Dorset today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; the nearest rescue is Margaret Green Animal Rescue (Lincoln Farm) at Winterborne Kingston. Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £300, and Blue Cross from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.

Are there Staffy puppies for adoption in Dorset?

Yes: 2 puppies of the 4 listed in and around Dorset are 12 months or under by their listed age.

Are there older Staffies for adoption in Dorset?

Yes: 1 of the 4 listed in and around Dorset is aged 7 or over by their listed age. Some rescues charge less for older dogs: Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over.
