What Yorkies are like to live with
The Yorkshire Terrier is a toy breed with a working past. The Royal Kennel Club describes it as a "silky toy terrier with roots in the Yorkshire cotton mills", and says it is thought that Scottish workers who came to the mines and mills of Yorkshire brought their terriers with them. It adds that the Yorkie became popular as a house pet but "still retains some of the features of his terrier background".

Breed descriptions are general. Every rescue animal is an individual, so the rescue's own assessment of the animal comes first.

How many rescue Yorkies are available for adoption in Northern Ireland?
As of 8 November 2026, no Yorkies are listed for adoption in Northern Ireland on LocalPetFinder. Rescues add animals all the time, so this page fills as they list them.
Do Yorkshire Terriers shed?
Very little. The Royal Kennel Club lists the breed as not shedding, and Dogs Trust describes "long length with low shedding". The long coat still needs grooming every day.
How much exercise does a Yorkie need?
Up to 30 minutes a day, according to The Royal Kennel Club, and around 30 to 40 minutes according to PDSA. The Royal Kennel Club lists the Yorkie as a small dog that can live in a flat, in town or country.
How much does it cost to adopt a Yorkie in Northern Ireland?
Each rescue sets its own adoption fee, and Dogs Trust charges £287.50 for a puppy or adult dog in Northern Ireland (where you also need a dog licence). The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
Are there Yorkie puppies for sale in Northern Ireland?
No. We don't list animals for sale. Every Yorkie on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. Rescues rehome animals rather than selling them, usually for an adoption fee: for example, Dogs Trust £287.50 in Northern Ireland. The fee usually goes towards vet work already done, such as neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations. If you searched "yorkie puppies for sale Northern Ireland", the Yorkies here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price.
Can I get a free Yorkie to a good home in Northern Ireland, or one under £500?
Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £287.50 for a puppy or adult dog. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. In Northern Ireland all dogs must be microchipped at eight weeks old, so ask to see the microchip details (see nidirect).
Are there Yorkie puppies for adoption in Northern Ireland?
Not right now: no Yorkies are listed in Northern Ireland today, so there are no puppies either. Puppies do get listed, and rescues can tell you much more about an adult's character, so check back.
